Praise the Lord, my soul

1
Alleluia. Of Haggai and Zachariah.
2
Praise the Lord, O my soul. I will praise the Lord with my life. I will sing psalms to my God as long as I shall be. Do not trust in the leaders,(a)
3
in the sons of men, in whom there is no salvation.
4
His spirit will depart, and he will return to his earth. In that day, all their thoughts will perish.
5
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob: his hope is in the Lord God himself,
6
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all the things that are in them.
7
He preserves the truth forever. He executes judgment for those who suffer injury. He provides food for the hungry. The Lord releases those who are bound.
8
The Lord enlightens the blind. The Lord sets upright those who have been thrown down. The Lord loves the just.
9
The Lord watches over new arrivals. He will support the orphan and the widow. And he will destroy the ways of sinners.
10
The Lord shall reign forever: your God, O Zion, from generation to generation.

Footnotes

(a)145:2 The phrase ‘in vita mea’ could be translated as ‘in my life’ or ‘with my life.’ Adding ‘in my life’ to ‘I will praise the Lord’ adds little meaning. Whenever you praise God, it occurs during your life. However, the phrase ‘with my life’ adds significant meaning to the phase ‘I will praise the Lord,’ because it indicates that the praise is not merely with words, nor even with a few deeds, but that one’s entire life becomes a way of praising God.(Conte)

Praise the Lord, my soul

1
Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, my soul.
2
While I live, I will praise the LORD. I will sing praises to my God as long as I exist.
3
Don’t put your trust in princes, in a son of man in whom there is no help.
4
His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish.
5
Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD, his God,
6
who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps truth forever;
7
who executes justice for the oppressed; who gives food to the hungry. The LORD frees the prisoners.
8
The LORD opens the eyes of the blind. The LORD raises up those who are bowed down. The LORD loves the righteous.
9
The LORD preserves the foreigners. He upholds the fatherless and widow, but he turns the way of the wicked upside down.
10
The LORD will reign forever; your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD!
