- Kapitel 15 -

Then, after these things, Absalom obtained for himself chariots, and horsemen, and fifty men who went before him.

And rising up in the morning, Absalom was standing beside the entrance of the gate. And when there was any man who had a dispute that might go before the king’s judgment, Absalom would call him to him, and would say, “Which city are you from?” And responding, he would say, “I am your servant, from a certain tribe of Israel.”

And Absalom would answer him: “Your words seem good and just to me. But there is no one appointed by the king to hear you.” And Absalom would say:

“Who may appoint me judge over the land, so that all those who have a dispute might come to me, and I might judge justly.”

Then too, when a man would draw near to him, so that he might greet him, he would extend his hand, and taking hold of him, he would kiss him.

And he was doing this to all those of Israel arriving for judgment to be heard by the king. And he solicited the hearts of the men of Israel.

Then, after forty years, Absalom said to king David: “I should go and pay my vows, which I have vowed to the Lord at Hebron.

For your servant made a vow, when he was in Geshur of Syria, saying: If the Lord will lead me back to Jerusalem, I will sacrifice to the Lord.”

And king David said to him, “Go in peace.” And he rose up and went away to Hebron.

Then Absalom sent scouts into all the tribes of Israel, saying: “As soon as you hear the blare of the trumpet, say: ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron.’ ”

Now having been called, two hundred men from Jerusalem went forth with Absalom, going in simplicity of heart and being entirely ignorant of the plan.

Absalom also summoned Ahithophel the Gilonite, a counselor of David, from his city, Giloh. And when he was immolating victims, a very strong oath was sworn, and the people, hurrying together, joined with Absalom.

David Flees Jerusalem

(Psalm 3:1–8)

Then a messenger went to David, saying, “With their whole heart, all of Israel is following Absalom.”

And David said to his servants, who were with him in Jerusalem: “Rise up, let us flee! For otherwise there will be no escape for us from the face of Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest perhaps, upon arriving, he may seize us, and force ruin upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”

And the servants of the king said to him, “Everything whatsoever that our lord the king will command, we your servants shall carry out willingly.”

Therefore, the king departed, with his entire household on foot. And the king left behind ten women of the concubines to care for the house.(a)

And having gone forth on foot, the king and all of Israel stood at a distance from the house.

And all his servants were walking beside him. And the legions of the Cerethites and Phelethites, and all the Gittites, powerful fighters, six hundred men who had followed him from Gath on foot, were preceding the king.

Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite: “Why do you come with us? Return and live with the king. For you are a stranger, and you departed from your own place.

You arrived yesterday. And today should you be compelled to go away with us? For I should go to the place where I am going. But you should return, and lead your own brothers back with you. And the Lord will show mercy and truth to you, because you have shown grace and faith.”

And Ittai responded to the king, by saying, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, in whatever place you will be, my lord the king, whether in death or in life, your servant will be there.”

And David said to Ittai, “Come, and pass over.” And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all the men who were with him, and the rest of the multitude.

And they all wept with a great voice, and all the people passed over. The king also passed over the torrent Kidron. And all the people advanced opposite the way which looks out toward the desert.

Now Zadok the priest also went, and all the Levites went with him, carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God. And Abiathar went up, until all the people who had departed from the city had gone by.

And the king said to Zadok: “Carry back the ark of God into the city. If I shall find grace in the sight of the Lord, he will lead me back. And he will show it to me in his tabernacle.

But if he will say to me, ‘You are not pleasing,’ I am ready. Let him do whatever is good in his own sight.”

And the king said to Zadok the priest: “O seer, return into the city in peace. And let your son Ahimaaz, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar, your two sons, be with you.

Behold, I will hide in the plains of the desert, until word from you may arrive to inform me.”

Therefore, Zadok and Abiathar carried back the ark of God into Jerusalem, and they remained there.

David Weeps at the Mount of Olives

(Psalm 63:1–11)

But David ascended to the Mount of Olives, climbing and weeping, advancing with bare feet and with his head covered. Moreover, all the people who were with him ascended, weeping with their heads covered.(b)

Then it was reported to David that Ahithophel also had joined in swearing with Absalom. And David said, “ O Lord, I beg you, to uncover the foolishness of the counsel of Ahithophel.”

And when David had ascended to the summit of the mountain, where he was going to adore the Lord, behold Hushai the Archite met him, with his garment torn and his head covered with soil.

And David said to him: “If you come with me, you will be a burden to me.

But if you return to the city, and you say to Absalom, ‘I am your servant, O king; just as I have been the servant of your father, so too will I be your servant,’ you will destroy the counsel of Ahithophel

And you have with you the priests Zadok and Abiathar. And any word whatsoever that you will hear from the house of the king, you shall reveal it to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests.

Now with them are their two sons Ahimaaz, the son of Zadok, and Jonathan, the son of Abiathar. And you shall send to me by them every word that you will have heard.”

Therefore, Hushai, the friend of David, went into the city. And Absalom also entered into Jerusalem.

Absaloms Verrat

Hiernach schaffte sich Absalom Wagen und Reiter an, dazu fünfzig Männer, die vor ihm hergingen.

Und Absalom pflegte sich des Morgens aufzumachen und sich an den Eingang des Tores zu stellen; und jeden Mann, der einen Rechtshandel hatte, wegen dessen er vor des Königs Gericht kommen wollte, rief er zu sich und sprach: Aus welcher Stadt bist du? Wenn dieser dann antwortete und sprach: Aus dem und dem Stamme Israels bin ich, dein Diener,

so entgegnete Absalom ihm: Deine Aussagen scheinen mir gut und gerecht, aber es ist niemand vom Könige bestellt, der dir Gehör gebe. Und Absalom sprach:

Wer möchte mich zum Richter über das Land setzen, dass alle zu mir kommen, die einen Rechtshandel haben, und ich richte, wie es recht ist?

Aber auch wenn jemand ihm nahte, um ihn zu begrüßen, so streckte er die Hand aus und umfing ihn und küsste ihn.

So tat er allen aus Israel, die zum Gerichte kamen, um vom Könige gehört zu werden, und so suchte er die Herzen der Männer Israels zu gewinnen.

Nach vierzig Jahren aber sprach Absalom zu dem Könige David: Ich will hingehen und meine Gelübde erfüllen, welche ich dem Herrn in Hebron gemacht habe;

denn dein Diener hat, als er zu Gessur in Syrien war, gelobt und gesprochen: Wenn mich der Herr wieder nach Jerusalem zurückführt, so will ich dem Herrn ein Opfer bringen.

Da sprach der König David zu ihm: Gehe hin in Frieden! Und er machte sich auf und ging nach Hebron.

Absalom aber sandte in alle Stämme Israels Kundschafter und ließ sagen: Sobald ihr den Schall der Posaune hört, so sprechet: Absalom ist König geworden in Hebron!

Es zogen auch zweihundert Männer von Jerusalem mit Absalom, die dazu aufgefordert waren und in der Einfalt ihres Herzens mitgingen, ohne die Ursache im geringsten zu ahnen.

Auch ließ Absalom Achitophel, den Giloniter, Davids Berater, aus seiner Vaterstadt Gilo holen. Als er nun die Opfer darbrachte, bildete sich eine mächtige Verschwörung und das Volk lief zusammen und wurde immer zahlreicher um Absalom.

David flieht aus Jerusalem

(Psalm 3,1-8)

Da kam ein Bote zu David und sprach: Ganz Israel folgt Absalom von ganzem Herzen nach.

David sprach zu seinen Dienern, welche bei ihm in Jerusalem waren: Auf, lasset uns fliehen! denn wir werden vor Absalom nicht entrinnen können; machet euch eilig auf den Weg, dass er nicht etwa komme und uns überfalle und Verderben über uns bringe und die Stadt mit der Schärfe des Schwertes schlage.

Die Diener des Königs sprachen zu ihm: Alles, was der Herr, unser König, immer gebietet, wollen wir, deine Diener, gern tun.

So zog der König und sein ganzes Haus zu Fuße aus und der König ließ zehn Nebenfrauen zurück, das Haus zu bewahren.

So zog der König und ganz Israel zu Fuß hinaus und machte fern vom Hause Halt.

Und alle seine Diener gingen mit ihm und die Scharen der Cerether und Phelether und alle Gethiter, tapfere Streiter, sechshundert Mann, welche ihm als Fußvolk von Geth gefolgt waren, gingen vor dem Könige her.

Da sprach der König zu Ethai, dem Gethiter: Warum ziehest du mit uns? Kehre um und halte dich zu dem Könige, denn du bist ein Fremdling und bist aus deiner Heimat ausgezogen.

Gestern bist du gekommen und solltest heute gezwungen werden, mit uns auszuziehen? Ich gehe hin, wohin ich soll. Kehre um und führe deine Brüder mit dir zurück, und der Herr wird dir Barmherzigkeit und Treue erweisen, weil du Liebe und Treue bewiesen hast.

Ethai antwortete dem Könige und sprach: So wahr der Herr lebt und so wahr mein Gebieter, der König, lebt! Wo immer du, mein Herr und König, sein wirst, es sei im Tode oder im Leben, dort wird auch dein Diener sein.

Da sprach David zu Ethai: So komme und ziehe mit! Und Ethai, der Gethiter zog mit, samt allen Leuten, die bei ihm waren, und die übrige Schar.

Und alle weinten mit lauter Stimme und alles Volk zog voran, auch der König ging über den Bach Cedron und die ganze Schar zog den Weg dahin, der zur Wüste führt.

Es kam aber auch Sadok, der Priester, und alle Leviten mit ihm, welche die Lade des Bundes Gottes trugen, und sie setzten die Lade Gottes nieder und Abiathar ging hinauf, bis alles Volk, welches aus der Stadt ausgezogen, vorüber war.

Da sprach der König zu Sadok: Bringe die Lade Gottes wieder in die Stadt zurück! Wenn ich Gnade in den Augen des Herrn finde, so wird er mich zurückführen und mich sie und sein Zelt schauen lassen.

Spricht er aber zu mir: Du findest nicht mein Wohlgefallen, so bin ich bereit, er tue, was gut vor ihm ist!

Weiter sprach der König zu dem Priester Sadok: O Seher! Kehre in Frieden in die Stadt zurück und dein Sohn Achimaas und Jonathas, der Sohn Abiathars, eure beiden Söhne, mögen mit euch sein.

Sehet, ich werde mich in der Ebene der Wüste verborgen halten, bis Nachricht von euch kommt und mir Kunde wird.

Sadok und Abiathar brachten also die Lade Gottes nach Jerusalem zurück und blieben daselbst.

(Psalm 63,1-11)

David aber stieg den Ölberg hinan, im Gehen weinend, mit entblößten Füßen einherschreitend, das Haupt verhüllt, und auch alles Volk, das bei ihm war, ging mit verhülltem Haupte und weinend hinan.

Da ward David angezeigt, dass auch Achitophel bei den Verschworenen um Absalom sei, und David sprach: Mache zur Torheit, ich bitte, o Herr, den Rat Achitophels!

Als David nun auf den Gipfel des Berges kam, wo er den Herrn anbete wollte, siehe, da kam ihm Chusai, der Arachiter, mit zerrissenem Kleide und Staub auf seinem Haupte, entgegen.

David sprach zu ihm: Wenn du mit mir ziehest, so wirst du mir zur Last sein;

wenn du aber in die Stadt zurückkehrst und zu Absalom sprichst: Ich bin dein Diener, o König! so wie ich der Diener deines Vaters gewesen bin, so will ich auch dein Diener sein, so wirst du den Rat Achitophels zu nichte machen.

Du hast aber Sadok und Abiathar, die Priester, bei dir; alles, was du immer aus des Königs Hause erfährst, zeige den Priestern Sadok und Abiathar an.

Sie haben auch ihre beiden Söhne bei sich, Sadok seinen Sohn Achimaas und Abiathar seinen Sohn Jonathas; durch sie lasset mir alles kundtun, was ihr hören werdet.

Als nun Chusai, der Freund Davids, in die Stadt kam, zog Absalom in Jerusalem ein.
