- Kapitel 31 -

(Numbers 27:18–23)

And so, Moses went out, and he spoke all these words to all of Israel.

And he said to them: “Today, I am one hundred and twenty years old. I am no longer able to go out and return, especially since the Lord has also said to me, ‘You shall not cross this Jordan.’

Therefore, the Lord your God will go across before you. He himself will abolish all these nations in your sight, and you shall possess them. And this man Joshua shall go across before you, just as the Lord has spoken.

And the Lord will do to them just as he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, and he will wipe them away.

Therefore, when the Lord will have delivered these to you also, you shall act similarly toward them, just as I have instructed you.

Act manfully and be strengthened. Do not be afraid, and do not dread at the sight of them. For the Lord your God himself is your commander, and he will neither dismiss nor abandon you.”

And Moses called Joshua, and, before all of Israel, he said to him: ‘Be strong and valiant. For you shall lead this people into the land which the Lord swore that he would give to their fathers, and you shall divide it by lot.

And the Lord, who is your commander, will himself be with you. He will neither renounce nor abandon you. Do not be afraid, and do not dread.”

The Reading of the Law

(Nehemiah 8:1–8)

And so, Moses wrote this law, and he handed it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel.

And he instructed them, saying: “After seven years, in the year of remission, at the solemnity of the Feast of Tabernacles,

when all of Israel has convened in order to appear in the sight of the Lord your God, in the place which the Lord will choose, you shall read the words of this law before all of Israel, in their hearing.

And when the people have gathered together, men as well as women and little children, and the new arrivals who are within your gates, they shall listen so that they may learn, and may fear the Lord your God, and may keep and fulfill all the words of this law,

and also so that their sons, who are now ignorant, may be able to listen, and may fear the Lord their God all the days that they live in the land to which you will travel, crossing the Jordan in order to obtain it.”

God Commissions Joshua

And the Lord said to Moses: “Behold, the days of your death draw near. Call Joshua, and stand in the tabernacle of the testimony, so that I may instruct him.” Therefore, Moses and Joshua went and stood in the tabernacle of the testimony.

And the Lord appeared there, in a pillar of cloud, which stood at the entrance of the tabernacle.

And the Lord said to Moses: “Behold, you shall sleep with your fathers, and this people will rise up and will fornicate after foreign gods, in the land which they will enter so that they may live in it. In that place, they will forsake me, and they will make void the covenant that I have formed with them.

And my fury will be enraged against them in that day. And I will abandon them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured. Every evil and affliction will find them, so much so that they will say in that day: ‘Truly, it is because God is not with me that these evils have found me.’

But I will hide myself, and I will conceal my face in that day, because of all the evils that they have done, because they have followed strange gods.

And so, write this canticle now, and teach it to the sons of Israel, so that they may retain it in memory, and may chant it by mouth, and so that this verse may be a testimony to me among the sons of Israel.

For I will lead them into the land, about which I swore to their fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey. And when they have eaten, and have been satiated and fattened, they will turn aside to foreign gods, and they will serve them. And they will disparage me, and they will nullify my covenant.

And after many evils and afflictions have overwhelmed them, this canticle will answer them as a testimony; it shall never pass into oblivion, away from the mouths of their offspring. For I know their thoughts and what they are about to do today, even before I lead them into the land which I have promised to them.”

Therefore, Moses wrote the canticle, and he taught it to the sons of Israel.

And the Lord instructed Joshua, the son of Nun, and he said: “Be strong and valiant. For you shall lead the sons of Israel into the land which I have promised, and I will be with you.”

The Law Placed in the Ark

Therefore, after Moses had written the words of this law in a volume, and had finished it,

he instructed the Levites, who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying:

“Take this book, and place it inside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, so that it may be there as a testimony against you.

For I know your contentiousness and your very stiff neck. Even while I am still living and entering with you, you have always acted with contention against the Lord. How much more so when I will be dead?

Gather to me all those greater by birth throughout your tribes, as well as your teachers, and I will speak these words in their hearing, and I will call heaven and earth as witnesses against them.

For I know that, after my death, you will act with iniquity, and you will quickly depart from the way that I have instructed to you. And so, evils will meet you in the end time, when you will have done evil in the sight of the Lord so as to provoke him through the works of your hands.”

Moses Begins His Song

Thus did Moses speak, in the hearing of the entire assembly of Israel, the words of this canticle, and he completed it to its very end.

Und Moses ging hin, und redete alle diese Worte zu ganz Israel.

und sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin heute hundert und zwanzig Jahre alt und kann nicht mehr aus und eingehen, besonders da auch der Herr zu mir gesagt hat: Du wirst den Jordan da nicht überschreiten.

So wird nun der Herr, dein Gott, vor dir hinüberziehen; er wird alle diese Völker vor dir vertilgen, und du wirst ihren Besitz erlangen; und Josue wird vor dir hinüberziehen, wie der Herr gesprochen hat.

Und der Herr wird ihnen tun, wie er Sehon und Og, den Königen der Amorrhiter, und ihrem Lande getan hat, und wird sie vertilgen,

Wenn er euch nun auch diese preisgeben wird, so tuet ihnen, wie ich euch geboten habe.

Seid mannhaft und tapfer! Fürchtet euch nicht, und erschrecket nicht bei ihrem Anblicke, denn der Herr, dein Gott, ist selbst dein Führer, er wird dich nicht preisgeben und dich nicht verlassen.

Hierauf berief Moses den Josue und sprach zu ihm vor ganz Israel: Sei mannhaft und tapfer! Denn du sollst dieses Volk in das Land führen, das zu geben der Herr ihren Vätern geschworen hat, und du sollst es durch das Los verteilen.

Und der Herr, der euer Führer ist, er wird mit dir sein; er wird dich nicht preisgeben und dich nicht verlassen; fürchte dich nicht und zage nicht!

Das Gesetz, das alle sieben Jahre zu lesen ist

(Nehemia 8,1-8)

Moses also schrieb dieses Gesetz und übergab es den Priestern, den Söhnen Levis, welche die Lade des Bundes des Herrn trugen, und allen Ältesten Israels.

Und er gebot ihnen und sprach: Nach je sieben Jahren, im Erlassjahre, am Laubhüttenfeste,

wenn alle aus Israel zusammen kommen, um vor dem Herrn, deinem Gott, an dem Orte zu erscheinen, den der Herr erwählen wird, sollst du die Worte dieses Gesetzes vor ganz Israel lesen, dass sie es hören,

und vor dem ganzen versammelten Volke, sowohl Männern wie Weibern, Kindern wie Fremdlingen, die innerhalb deiner Tore sind; damit sie es hören und lernen, und den Herrn, euern Gott fürchten, und alle Worte dieses Gesetzes beobachten und erfüllen;

auch ihre Söhne, die es jetzt noch nicht kennen, dass auch diese es hören können und den Herrn, ihren Gott, fürchten die ganze Zeit, die sie in dem Lande wohnen, in das ihr über den Jordan zieht, es in Besitz zu nehmen.

Vorhersage von Israels Rebellion

Und der Herr sprach zu Moses: Siehe, die Zeit deines Todes ist nahe; rufe Josue, und gehet in das Zelt des Zeugnisses, dass ich ihm meine Weisungen gebe. Moses und Josue gingen also hin und traten in das Zelt des Zeugnisses,

und der Herr erschien daselbst in der Wolkensäule, welche am Eingange des Zeltes stand.

Da sprach der Herr zu Moses: Siehe, du wirst zu deinen Vätern entschlafen, alsdann wird dies Volk sich erheben und fremden Göttern nachbuhlen, in dem Lande, in das es zieht, darin Wohnung zu nehmen; es wird mich daselbst verlassen und den Bund, den ich mit ihm geschlossen, brechen.

Alsdann wird mein Grimm wider dasselbe entbrennen; und ich werde das Volk verlassen und mein Angesicht vor ihm verbergen, und es soll dem Verderben anheimfallen, und alle Art Übel und Trübsale werden es treffen, so dass es zu jener Zeit sagen wird: Wahrlich, weil Gott nicht mit mir ist, haben mich diese Übel betroffen!

Ich aber werde zu jener Zeit mein Angesicht verbergen und verhüllen, um all des Bösen willen, das es getan hat, weil es sich fremden Göttern zugewendet hat.

So schreibet euch nun dieses Lied auf und lehret es die Söhne Israels, dass sie es im Gedächtnis behalten und mit dem Munde singen, und dies Lied diene mir als Zeugnis unter den Söhnen Israels.

Denn ich werde sie in das Land führen, das ich ihren Vätern zugeschworen habe, das von Milch und Honig fließt. Und wenn sie gegessen haben und satt und fett geworden sind, so werden sie sich fremden Göttern zuwenden und diesen dienen; und werden mich lästern und meinen Bund brechen.

Wenn dann diese Übel und Trübsale sie treffen, so soll dieses Lied, das keine Vergessenheit aus dem Munde ihrer Nachkommen austilgen soll, Zeugnis gegen sie geben. Denn ehe ich sie in das Land führe, das ich ihnen verheißen habe, kenne ich ihre Gedanken, was sie bald tun werden.

Moses also schrieb dieses Lied auf und lehrte es die Söhne Israels.

Und der Herr gebot Josue, dem Sohne Nuns, und sprach: Sei mannhaft und stark! Denn du sollst die Söhne Israels in das Land führen, das ich ihnen verheißen habe, und ich werde mit dir sein.

Nachdem nun Moses die Worte dieses Gesetzes in ein Buch geschrieben und es vollendet hatte,

gebot er den Leviten, welche die Lade des Bundes des Herrn trugen, und sprach:

Nehmet dieses Buch, und leget es an der Seite der Lade des Bundes des Herrn, eures Gottes, nieder, damit es dort wider dich Zeugnis gebe.

Denn ich kenne deine Widerspenstigkeit und deinen störrigen Nacken. Jetzt, da ich noch am Leben war und bei euch weilte, seid ihr immer widerspenstig gegen den Herrn gewesen; wie viel mehr, wenn ich gestorben sein werde?

Versammelt alle Ältesten eurer Stämme und eure Lehrer zu mir, dass ich vor ihnen diese Worte verkünde und gegen sie Himmel und Erde anrufe.

Denn ich weiß, dass ihr nach meinem Tode übel handeln und schnell von dem Wege abweichen werdet, den ich euch gewiesen habe; und es wird euch in der letzten Zeit Unglück treffen, wenn ihr vor den Augen des Herrn übel tuet, indem ihr ihn durch die Werke eurer Hände zum Zorne reizt.

Das Lied des Mose

So sprach Moses vor den Ohren der ganzen Gemeinde Israel die Worte dieses Liedes, bis zum Ende.
