- Kapitel 10 -

What wisdom did for Adam, Noe, Abraham, Lot, Jacob, Joseph, and the people of Israel.

This is he, who was formed first by God, the father of the world, who was alone when created; she preserved him,(a)

and led him out of his offense, and gave him the power to maintain all things.(b)

After this, when the unjust man withdrew from her in his anger, he perished through anger by the murder of his brother.(c)

Because of this, when water destroyed the earth, wisdom healed it again, guiding the just by means of contemptible wood.(e)

Moreover, when the nations had conspired together to consent to wickedness, she knew the just, and preserved him without blame before God, and preserved his strength out of mercy for his sons.(h)

She freed this just man from the destruction of the impious, fleeing descending fire in the Five Cities,(j)

(k)

which, as a testimony to their wickedness, is a constantly smoking desolate land, and the trees bear fruit at uncertain times, and a figure of salt stands as a monument to an unbelieving soul.(l)

For, in disregarding wisdom, they are fallen, not so much in this, that they were ignorant of good, but that they bequeathed to men a memorial of their foolishness, so that, in the things in which they sinned, they were unable to escape notice.

Yet wisdom has freed from sorrow those who are self-observant.

She led the just man, this fugitive of his brother’s wrath, by the right ways, and revealed to him the kingdom of God, and gave him the knowledge of holiness, honored him in his labors, and completed his labors.(m)

In the midst of encircling deceit, she flowed around him and made him honest.

She guarded him from his enemies, and she defended him from seducers, and she gave him a strong conflict so that he might overcome and might know that the power of all things is wisdom.(n)

She did not abandon the just man when he was sold, but freed him from sinners; she went down with him into the pit,(o)

and she did not abandon him in chains, while she brought him the scepter of the kingdom and power against those who oppressed him, and revealed them to be liars who had dishonored him, and gave him everlasting glory.

She freed this just people and the blameless offspring, from the nations that had oppressed them.

She entered the soul of the servant of God and stood against dreadful kings in the midst of portents and signs,(p)

and she rendered to the just the wages of their labors, and led them along a wondrous way; and she was to them, like a cover by day, and like the light of the stars by night.

She carried them through the Red Sea, and led them across a great water.(q)

But their enemies, she submerged in the sea, and from the furthest depths, she drew them up. Therefore, the just carried off the spoils of the impious.

And they chanted to your holy name, Lord, and they together praised your victorious hand,

because wisdom opened the mouth of the mute, and made the speech of infants eloquent.

Was die Weisheit für Adam, Noe, Abraham, Lot, Jakob, Josef und das Volk Israel getan hat

Sie hat jenen bewahrt, der zuerst von Gott zum Vater des Erdkreises geschaffen worden, da er noch allein erschaffen war;

sie rettete ihn auch aus seiner Sünde und gab ihm Kraft, alles zu beherrschen.

Von ihr fiel jener Ungerechte in seinem Zorne ab und ging durch seinen brudermörderischen Zorn unter.

Als um seinetwillen die Erde durch eine Wasserflut verheert ward, half ihr wiederum die Weisheit, indem sie den Gerechten durch geringfügiges Holz leitete.

Sie erkannte auch, als die Völker sich in Übereinstimmung der Bosheit hingaben, den Gerechten und bewahrte ihn unsträflich vor Gott und erhielt ihn starkmütig gegen das Mitleiden mit seinem Sohne.

Sie errettete beim Untergange der Gottlosen den fliehenden Gerechten, da Feuer niederfiel auf die Fünfstädte;

zum Zeugnis von deren Bosheit die Erde dampfend öde liegt, die Bäume Früchte tragen, welche nicht reif werden, und als Andenken an eine ungläubige Seele die Salzsäule sich erhebt.

Denn da sie die Weisheit nicht achteten, gerieten sie nicht nur dahin, dass sie das Gute nicht kannten, sondern sie hinterließen auch den Menschen ein Denkmal ihrer Torheit, so dass sie in dem, worin sie gesündigt, nicht verborgen bleiben konnten.

Die Weisheit aber rettete die, welche sie verehrten, von Schmerzen.

Sie führte den Gerechten, der vor dem Zorne seines Bruders floh, auf rechten Wegen, zeigte ihm das Reich Gottes, gab ihm die Erkenntnis des Heiligen, bereicherte ihn bei seinen Mühen und segnete seine Arbeiten.

Sie stand ihm zur Seite, da er mit List hintergangen werden sollte, und machte ihn reich.

Sie schützte ihn vor seinen Feinden, stellte ihn sicher vor denen, die ihn bedrängten, und ließ ihn siegen im harten Streit, damit er erkennen sollte, wie die Weisheit mächtiger ist als alles.

Sie verließ den gekauften Gerechten nicht, sondern errettete ihn von den Sündern, sie stieg mit ihm in die Grube

und verließ ihn auch in Banden nicht, bis sie ihm das Zepter der Herrschaft zubrachte und Gewalt wider die, welche ihn unterdrückten; und sie erwies die als Lügner, welche ihn verunglimpften, und verlieh ihm ewigen Ruhm.

Sie erlöste das gerechte Volk und das unsträfliche Geschlecht von den Völkern, die es unterdrückten.

Sie ging in die Seele des Dieners Gottes ein und er trat furchtbaren Königen entgegen mit Wundern und Zeichen.

Sie verlieh den Gerechten den Lohn für ihre Mühen, leitete sie auf wunderbarem Wege und war ihnen Schirm am Tage und Sternenleuchte des Nachts;

sie führte sie durch das Rote Meer und brachte sie durch große Gewässer.

Ihre Feinde aber versenkte sie in das Meer und ließ sie aus der Tiefe des Abgrundes heraufkommen. Darum trugen die Gerechten die Beute der Gottlosen davon

und priesen, o Herr! deinen heiligen Namen und lobten einmütig deine siegreiche Hand,

denn die Weisheit öffnete den Mund der Stummen und machte die Zungen der Unmündigen beredt.
