- Kapitel 2 -

Now her husband Elimelech had a kinsman, a powerful man, and very rich, whose name was Booz.

And Ruth the Moabitess said to her mother in law: If thou wilt, I will go into the field, and glean the ears of corn that escape the hands of the reapers, wheresoever I shall find grace with a householder that will be favourable to me. And she answered her: Go, my daughter.

She went therefore and gleaned the ears of corn after the reapers. And it happened that the owner of that field was Booz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.

And behold, he came out of Bethlehem, and said to the reapers: The Lord be with you. And they answered him: The Lord bless thee.

And Booz said to the young man that was set over the reapers: Whose maid is this?

And he answered him: This is the Moabitess who came with Noemi, from the land of Moab,

And she desired leave to glean the ears of corn that remain, following the steps of the reapers: and she hath been in the field from morning till now, and hath not gone home for one moment.

And Booz said to Ruth: Hear me, daughter, do not go to glean in any other field, and do not depart from this place: but keep with my maids,

And follow where they reap. For I have charged my young men, not to molest thee: and if thou art thirsty, go to the vessels, and drink of the waters whereof the servants drink.

She fell on her face and worshipping upon the ground, said to him: Whence cometh this to me, that I should find grace before thy eyes, and that thou shouldst vouchsafe to take notice of me a woman of another country?

And he answered her: All hath been told me, that thou hast done to thy mother in law after the death of thy husband: and how thou hast left thy parents, and the land wherein thou wast born, and art come to a people which thou knewest not heretofore.

The Lord render unto thee for thy work, and mayest thou receive a full reward of the Lord the God of Israel, to whom thou art come, and under whose wings thou art fled.

And she said: I have found grace in thy eyes, my lord, who hast comforted me and hast spoken to the heart of thy handmaid, who am not like to one of thy maids.

And Booz said to her: At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. So she sat at the side of the reapers, and she heaped to herself frumenty, and ate and was filled, and took the leavings.

And she arose from thence, to glean the ears of corn as before. And Booz commanded his servants, saying: If she would even reap with you, hinder her not:

And let fall some of your handfuls of purpose, and leave them, that she may gather them without shame, and let no man rebuke her when she gathereth them.

She gleaned therefore in the field till evening: and beating out with a rod and threshing what she had gleaned, she found about the measure of an ephi of barley, that is, three bushels:

Which she took up and returned into the city, and shewed it to her mother in law: moreover she brought out, and gave her of the remains of her meat, wherewith she had been filled.

And her mother in law said to her: Where hast thou gleaned today, and where hast thou wrought? blessed be he that hath had pity on thee. And she told her with whom she had wrought: and she told the man’s name, that he was called Booz.

And Noemi answered her: Blessed be he of the Lord: because the same kindness which he shewed to the living, he hath kept also to the dead. And again she said: The man is our kinsman.

And Ruth said, He also charged me, that I should keep close to his reapers, till all the corn should be reaped.

And her mother in law said to her: It is better for thee, my daughter, to go out to reap with his maids, lest in another man’s field some one may resist thee.

So she kept close to the maids of Booz: and continued to glean with them, till all the barley and the wheat were laid up in the barns.

Rut trifft Boas

Elimelech aber, ihr Mann, hatte einen Verwandten, einen mächtigen und wohlhabenden Mann, namens Booz.

Und Ruth, die Moabitin, sagte zu ihrer Schwiegermutter: Befiehlst du, so gehe ich auf das Feld und lese die Ähren, die den Händen der Schnitter entgehen, wo ich immer bei einem gütigen Hausvater Gnade finde. Diese antwortete ihr: Gehe hin, meine Tochter!

Da ging sie hin und las Ähren auf hinter den Schnittern her. Es traf sich aber, dass dieser Acker einem Manne namens Booz gehörte, der aus der Verwandtschaft Elimelechs war.

Und siehe, er kam aus Bethlehem und sprach zu den Schnittern: Der Herr sei mit euch! Sie entgegnete ihm: Der Herr segne dich!

Da sprach Booz zu dem Jünglinge, der über die Schnitter gesetzt war: Wem gehört dieses Mädchen an?

Er antwortete ihm: Es ist eine Moabitin, welche mit Noemi aus dem Lande Moab gekommen ist;

sie hat gebeten, hinter den Schnittern hergehend, die Ähren auflesen zu dürfen, die zurückbleiben; und sie steht seit dem Morgen bis jetzt auf dem Felde und ist nicht einen Augenblick nach Hause zurückgekehrt.

Da sprach Booz zu Ruth: Höre, meine Tochter! gehe auf keinen andern Acker zum Auflesen und verlass diesen Ort nicht, sondern halte dich an meine Mägde,

und wo sie schneiden, da folge ihnen; denn ich habe meinen Knechten geboten, dass niemand dir wehre. Und wenn dich dürstet, so gehe hin zu den Gefäßen und trinke von dem Wasser, von dem auch die Knechte trinken.

Da warf sie sich auf ihr Angesicht, neigte sich nieder zur Erde und sprach zu ihm: Woher kommt mir dies, dass ich in deinen Augen Gnade gefunden habe und du dich gewürdigt hast, mich, ein fremdes Weib, zu kennen?

Er antwortete ihr: Es ist mir alles kund geworden, was du an deiner Schwiegermutter nach dem Tode deines Mannes getan hast; und dass du deine Eltern und das Land, in dem du geboren, verlassen hast und zu einem Volke gegangen bist, welches du vorher nicht kanntest.

Der Herr vergelte dir dein Tun und du mögest den vollen Lohn von dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, erlangen, zu dem du gekommen bist und unter dessen Flügel du dich geflüchtet hast.

Da sprach sie: Ich habe in deinen Augen Gnade gefunden, mein Gebieter; du hast mich getröstet und hast zu dem Herzen deiner Magd gesprochen, obwohl ich doch keiner deiner Mägde gleich bin!

Booz sprach zu ihr: Wenn die Essenszeit da ist, so komm hierher und iß Brot und tauche deinen Bissen in den Essig. Da setzte sie sich neben die Schnitter, und er legte ihr Röstkorn vor, und sie aß und wurde satt und nahm das, was übrig blieb, an sich.

Hierauf stand sie auf, um nach ihrer Gewohnheit wieder Ähren zu sammeln. Booz aber gebot seinen Knechten und sprach: Wenn sie auch mit euch schneiden wollte, so verwehret es ihr nicht;

auch werfet von euren Garben geflissentlich etwas hin und lasset es liegen, dass sie es ohne Scheu auflese, und niemand schelte sie, wenn sie sammelt.

So las sie denn auf dem Felde auf bis zum Abend; und als sie das, was sie gelesen hatte, mit dem Stabe ausschlug und ausklopfte, fand sie etwa ein Epha Gerste, das ist drei Maß.

Diese nahm sie auf und ging in die Stadt zurück und zeigte sie ihrer Schwiegermutter; darauf zog sie das hervor, was sie übrig behalten hatte von der Speise, von der sie sich gesättigt hatte, und gab es ihr.

Da fragte ihre Schwiegermutter sie: Wo hast du heut gesammelt und wo hast du gearbeitet? Gesegnet sei der, welcher sich deiner erbarmt hat! Sie teilte ihr mit, bei wem sie gearbeitet hatte, und sagte, dass der Name des Mannes Booz heiße.

Da antwortete ihr Noemi: gesegnet sei er von dem Herrn! Denn dieselbe Gnade, die er den Lebenden erwiesen, hat er auch den Toten bewahrt! Und wiederum sprach sie: Der Mann ist unser Verwandter!

Ruth sprach: Auch das hat er mir befohlen, ich solle mich so lange zu seinen Schnittern halten, bis alle Saaten eingeerntet seien.

Ihre Schwiegermutter sagte zu ihr: Es ist besser, meine Tochter, dass du mit seinen Mägden hinausgehest, um zu ernten, damit niemand auf einem fremden Acker dir wehre!

So hielt sie sich zu den Mägden des Booz und erntete mit ihnen so lange, bis Gerste und Weizen in die Scheuern gebracht waren.
