- Kapitel 19 -

Now Ahab tolde Iezebel all that Eliiah had done, and how he had slaine all the prophets with the sword.

Then Iezebel sent a messenger vnto Eliiah, saying, The gods doe so to me and more also, if I make not thy life like one of their liues by to morowe this time.

When he sawe that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which is in Iudah, and left his seruant there.

But he went a dayes iourney into the wildernesse, and came and sate downe vnder a iuniper tree, and desired that he might die, and sayde, It is now ynough: O Lord, take my soule, for I am no better then my fathers.

And as he lay and slept vnder the iuniper tree, behold now, an Angel touched him, and said vnto him, Vp, and eate.

And when he looked about, behold, there was a cake baken on the coles, and a pot of water at his head: so he did eate and drinke, and returned and slept.

And the Angel of the Lord came againe the second time, and touched him, and sayd, Vp, and eate: for thou hast a great iourney.

Then he arose, and did eate and drinke, and walked in the strength of that meate fourtie dayes and fourtie nights, vnto Horeb the mount of God.

The LORD Speaks to Elijah at Horeb

And there he entred into a caue, and lodged there: and beholde, the Lord spake to him, and said vnto him, What doest thou here, Eliiah?

And he answered, I haue bene very ielous for the Lord God of hostes: for the children of Israel haue forsaken thy couenant, broken downe thine altars, and slayne thy Prophets with the sword, and I onely am left, and they seeke my life to take it away.

And he saide, Come out, and stand vpon the mount before the Lord. And beholde, the Lord went by, and a mightie strong winde rent the mountaines, and brake the rockes before the Lord: but the Lord was not in the winde: and after the wind came an earthquake: but the Lord was not in the earthquake:

And after the earthquake came fire: but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire came a still and soft voyce.

And when Eliiah heard it, he couered his face with his mantel, and went out, and stoode in the entring in of ye caue: and behold, there came a voyce vnto him, and sayd, What doest thou here, Eliiah?

And he answered, I haue bene very ielous for the Lord God of hostes, because the children of Israel haue forsaken thy couenant, cast downe thine altars, and slayne thy Prophets with the sworde, and I onely am left, and they seeke my life to take it away.

And the Lord said vnto him, Goe, returne by the wildernes vnto Damascus, and when thou commest there, anoint Hazael King ouer Aram.

And Iehu the sonne of Nimshi shalt thou anoynt King ouer Israel: and Elisha the sonne of Shaphat of Abel Meholah shalt thou anoynt to be Prophet in thy roume.

And him that escapeth from the sworde of Hazael, shall Iehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Iehu, shall Elisha slay.

Yet wil I leaue seuen thousand in Israel, euen all the knees that haue not bowed vnto Baal, and euery mouth that hath not kissed him.

The Call of Elisha

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the sonne of Shaphat who was plowing with twelue yoke of oxen before him, and was with the twelft: and Eliiah went towards him, and cast his mantel vpon him.

And he left the oxen, and ran after Eliiah, and sayde, Let mee, I pray thee, kisse my father and my mother, and then I wil follow thee. Who answered him, Go, returne: for what haue I done to thee?

And when he went backe againe from him, he tooke a couple of oxen, and slewe them, and sod their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gaue vnto the people, and they did eate: then he arose and went after Eliiah, and ministred vnto him.

Elia flieht vor Isebel

Achab aber berichtete der Jezabel alles, was Elias getan und wie er alle Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet hätte.

Da sandte Jezabel einen Boten zu Elias und ließ ihm sagen: Dies und das sollen mir die Götter antun und das hinzufügen, wenn ich nicht morgen um diese Stunde deinem Leben tue, wie dem Leben eines jeden von jenen geschehen.

Darum fürchtete sich Elias und machte sich auf und ging davon, wohin ihn nur immer der Wille führte, und als er nach Bersabee in Juda kam, entließ er daselbst seinen Diener,

er aber ging weiter in die Wüste, eine Tagreise weit. Als er bis dahin gekommen war und sich unter einen Wacholderbaum gesetzt hatte, wünschte er sich den Tod und sprach: Es ist genug für mich, Herr, nimm mein Leben! Denn ich bin nicht besser als meine Väter.

Hierauf legte er sich nieder und entschlief im Schatten eines Wacholderbaumes; da siehe, rührte ihn ein Engel des Herrn an und sprach zu ihm: Stehe auf und iss!

Als er um sich blickte, siehe, da lag zu seinen Häupten ein Aschenkuchen und ein Gefäß mit Wasser. Da aß er und trank und schlief wieder ein.

Und der Engel des Herrn kam zum zweiten Mal wieder, rührte ihn an und sprach zu ihm: Stehe auf und iss, denn ein weiter Weg steht dir noch bevor.

Da stand er auf, aß und trank und ging in Kraft dieser Speise vierzig Tage und vierzig Nächte bis zum Berge Gottes Horeb.

Als er dorthin gekommen war, blieb er in einer Höhle; und siehe, das Wort des Herrn erging an ihn und er sprach zu ihm: Was tust du hier, Elias?

Er antwortete: Ich habe für den Herrn, den Gott der Heerscharen, geeifert, denn die Söhne Israels haben deinen Bund verlassen; sie haben deine Altäre zerstört, deine Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet, ich allein bin übriggeblieben und sie trachten darnach, mir das Leben zu nehmen.

Gottes Offenbarung an Elia

Da sprach er zu ihm: Gehe hinaus und tritt auf den Berg vor dem Herrn hin; siehe, der Herr geht vorüber und ein großer, starker Wind, der Berge umwälzt und Felsen zermalmt, vor dem Herrn her, der Herr aber ist nicht in dem Winde, und nach dem Winde ein Erdbeben, der Herr aber ist nicht in dem Erdbeben,

und nach dem Erdbeben Feuer, der Herr aber ist nicht in dem Feuer, und nach dem Feuer sanftes Säuseln der Luft.

Als Elias dies hörte, verhüllte er sein Angesicht mit seinem Mantel und ging heraus und trat an den Eingang der Höhle und siehe, eine Stimme redete zu ihm und sprach: Was tust du hier, Elias? Er antwortete:

Ich habe für den Herrn, den Gott der Heerscharen, geeifert, denn die Söhne Israels haben deinen Bund verlassen; sie haben deine Altäre zerstört, deine Propheten mit dem Schwerte getötet, ich allein bin übriggeblieben und sie trachten darnach, mir das Leben zu nehmen.

Der Herr aber sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und kehre zurück auf deinen Weg durch die Wüste nach Damaskus; und wenn du dahin kommst, so salbe Hazael zum Könige über Syrien

und Jehu, den Sohn Namsis, salbe zum Könige über Israel, Eliseus aber, den Sohn Saphats, aus Abelmehula, salbe zum Propheten an deiner Statt.

Und es wird geschehen, wer immer dem Schwerte Hazaels entrinnt, den wird Jehu töten, und wer dem Schwerte Jehus entrinnt, den wird Eliseus töten.

Und ich werde mir in Israel siebentausend übrig behalten, die ihre Kniee nicht vor Baal gebeugt haben, und jeden Mund, welcher ihn nicht durch Handkuss angebetet hat.

Elisa folgt Elia

Elias also zog von dannen und fand Eliseus, den Sohn Saphats, wie er mit zwölf Joch Rindern pflügte, und er selbst war einer von denen, welche mit den zwölf Joch Rindern pflügten. Als nun Elias zu ihm kam, warf er ihm seinen Mantel um.

Alsbald verließ dieser die Ochsen, eilte Elias nach und sprach: Ich bitte, lass mich meinen Vater und meine Mutter küssen, alsdann will ich dir nachfolgen. Er sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin und komme wieder, denn das Meinige habe ich an dir getan.

Da wandte er sich von ihm, nahm ein Paar Rinder, schlachtete sie, kochte mit dem Pfluge der Rinder das Fleisch, gab es den Leuten und sie aßen; sodann stand er auf, ging fort und folgte Elias nach und diente ihm.
