- Kapitel 20 -

Then Ben-hadad the King of Aram assembled all his armie, and two and thirtie Kings with him, with horses, and charets, and went vp and besieged Samaria, and fought against it.

And he sent messengers to Ahab King of Israel, into the citie,

And sayd vnto him, Thus sayth Ben-hadad, Thy siluer and thy golde is mine: also thy women, and thy fayre children are mine.

And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, My lord King, according to thy saying, I am thine, and all that I haue.

And when the messengers came againe, they said, Thus commandeth Ben-hadad, and saith, When I shall send vnto thee, and command, thou shalt deliuer me thy siluer and thy golde, and thy women, and thy children,

Or els I will sende my seruants vnto thee by to morow this time: and they shall search thine house, and the houses of thy seruants: and whatsoeuer is pleasant in thine eyes, they shall take it in their handes, and bring it away.

Then the King of Israel sent for all the Elders of the land, and sayd, Take heede, I pray you, and see how he seeketh mischiefe: for he sent vnto me for my wiues, and for my children, and for my siluer, and for my golde, and I denyed him not.

And all the Elders, and all the people sayd to him, Hearken not vnto him, nor consent.

Wherefore hee sayde vnto the messengers of Ben-hadad, Tell my lorde the King, All that thou didddest sende for to thy seruant at the first time, that I will doe, but this thing I may not do. And the messengers departed, and brought him an answere.

And Ben-hadad sent vnto him, and sayde, The gods do so to me and more also, if the dust of Samaria be ynough to all the people that follow me, for euery man an handfull.

And the King of Israel answered, and sayd, Tell him, Let not him that girdeth his harneis, boast himselfe, as he that putteth it off.

And when he heard that tidings, as he was with the Kings drinking in the pauilions, he sayd vnto his seruants, Bring forth your engines, and they set them against the citie.

Ahab Defeats Ben-hadad

And beholde, there came a Prophet vnto Ahab King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Hast thou seene all this great multitude? beholde, I will deliuer it into thine hande this day, that thou mayest knowe, that I am the Lord.

And Ahab sayd, By whome? And he sayde, Thus sayth the Lord, By the seruants of the princes of the prouinces. He sayde againe, Who shall order the battel? And he answered, Thou.

Then he nombred the seruantes of the princes of the prouinces, and they were two hundreth, two and thirtie: and after them he nombred the whole people of all the children of Israel, euen seuen thousand.

And they went out at noone: but Ben-hadad did drinke till he was drunken in the tentes, both he and the Kings: for two and thirtie Kings helped him.

So the seruants of the princes of the prouinces went out first: and Ben-hadad sent out, and they shewed him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria.

And he sayde, Whether they be come out for peace, take them aliue: or whether they bee come out to fight, take them yet aliue.

So they came out of the citie, to wit, the seruants of the princes of the prouinces, and the hoste which followed them.

And they slew euery one his enemie: and the Aramites fled, and Israel pursued them: but Ben-hadad ye King of Aram escaped on an horse with his horsemen.

And the King of Israel went out, and smote the horses and charets, and with a great slaughter slew he the Aramites.

(For there had come a Prophet to the King of Israel, and had sayd vnto him, Goe, be of good courage, and consider, and take heede what thou doest: for when the yeere is gone about, the King of Aram wil come vp against thee)

Then the seruants of the King of Aram said vnto him, Their gods are gods of the moutaines, and therefore they ouercame vs: but let vs fight against them in the playne, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them.

And this doe, Take the Kings away, euery one out of his place, and place captaines for them.

And nomber thy selfe an armie, like the armie that thou hast lost, with such horses, and such charets, and we wil fight against them in the plaine, and doubtlesse we shall ouercome them: and he hearkened vnto their voyce, and did so.

Another War with Ben-hadad

And after the yeere was gone about, Ben-hadad nombred the Aramites, and went vp to Aphek to fight against Israel.

And the children of Israel were nombred, and were all assembled and went against them, and the children of Israel pitched before them, like two litle flockes of kiddes: but the Aramites filled the countrey.

And there came a man of God, and spake vnto the King of Israel, saying, Thus sayeth the Lord, Because the Aramites haue sayd, The Lord is the God of the mountaines, and not God of the valleis, therefore will I deliuer all this great multitude into thine hand, and ye shall know that I am the Lord.

And they pitched one ouer against the other seuen dayes, and in the seuenth day the battel was ioyned: and the children of Israel slew of the Aramites an hundreth thousand footemen in one day.

But the rest fled to Aphek into the citie: and there fel a wall vpon seuen and twentie thousand men that were left: and Ben-hadad fled into the citie, and came into a secret chamber.

Ahab Spares Ben-hadad

And his seruants sayd vnto him, Beholde nowe, we haue heard say that the Kings of the house of Israel are mercifull Kings: we pray thee, let vs put sacke cloth about our loynes, and ropes about our heads, and goe out to the King of Israel: it may be that he will saue thy life.

Then they gyrded sackecloth about their loynes, and put ropes about their heads, and came to the King of Israel, and sayd, Thy seruant Ben-hadad sayth, I pray thee, let me liue: and he sayd, Is he yet aliue? he is my brother.

Now the men tooke diliget heede, if they could catch any thing of him, and made haste, and sayd, Thy brother Ben-hadad. And he sayd, Go, bring him. So Ben-hadad came out vnto him, and he caused him to come vp vnto the chariot.

And Ben-hadad sayd vnto him, The cities, which my father tooke from thy father, I wil restore, and thou shalt make streetes for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria. Then said Ahab, I will let thee goe with this couenant. So he made a couenant with him, and let him goe.

A Prophet Reproves Ahab

Then a certaine man of the children of the Prophets sayd vnto his neighbour by the comandement of the Lord, Smite me, I pray thee. But the man refused to smite him.

Then sayd he vnto him, Because thou hast not obeyed the voyce of the Lord, beholde, as soone as thou art departed from me, a lyon shall slay thee. So when he was departed from him, a lyon found him and slew him.

Then he founde another man, and sayde, Smite mee, I pray thee. And the man smote him, and in smiting wounded him.

So the Prophet departed, and wayted for the King by the way, and disguised himselfe with ashes vpon his face.

And when the King came by, he cried vnto the King, and said, Thy seruant went into the middes of the battel: and beholde, there went away a man, whom another man brought vnto me, and sayd, Keepe this man: if he be lost, and want, thy life shall go for his life, or els thou shalt pay a talent of siluer.

And as thy seruant had here and there to do, he was gone: And the King of Israel said vnto him, So shall thy iudgement be: thou hast giuen sentence.

And hee hasted, and tooke the ashes away from his face: and the King of Israel knewe him that he was of the Prophets:

And he said vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast let goe out of thine handes a man whom I appoynted to dye, thy life shall goe for his life, and thy people for his people.

And the King of Israel went to his house heauie and in displeasure, and came to Samaria.

Ahab besiegt die Syrer

Benadad aber, der König von Syrien, sammelte sein ganzes Heer und zweiunddreißig Könige um sich und Rosse und Wagen und er zog aus und kämpfte gegen Samaria und belagerte es.

Auch sandte er Boten zu Achab, dem Könige von Israel, in die Stadt

und ließ sagen: So spricht Benadad: Dein Silber und dein Gold ist mein und deine Frauen und deine besten Söhne sind mein!

Da antwortete der König von Israel: Nach deinem Worte, mein Herr und König! ich bin dein, mit allem, was mein ist.

Doch die Boten kamen wieder und sprachen: Also spricht Benadad, der uns an dich sendet: Dein Silber und dein Gold, deine Frauen und deine Söhne sollst du mir geben.

Daher werde ich morgen um diese Stunde meine Diener zu dir senden, dass sie dein Haus und das Haus deiner Diener durchsuchen, und sie werden alles, was ihnen gefällt, an sich nehmen und forttragen.

Da berief der König von Israel alle Ältesten des Landes und sprach: Erkennet und sehet, dass er uns nachstellt, denn er hat zu mir gesendet, um meine Frauen und Söhne, und mein Silber und Gold und ich habe es ihm nicht verweigert.

Da sprachen alle Ältesten und das ganze Volk zu ihm: Höre nicht auf ihn und gehe nicht auf seinen Willen ein.

Er antwortete also den Boten Benadads: Saget meinem Herrn, dem Könige: Alles, um was du zuerst zu mir, deinem Knechte, gesandt hast, will ich tun; dies aber kann ich nicht tun.

Als nun die Boten zurückkehrten und es jenem berichteten, sandte er sie nochmals hin und ließ sagen: Dies mögen mir die Götter tun und das dazu, wenn der Staub von Samaria hinreicht, dass alles Volk, welches mir folgt, eine Handvoll davon nehmen kann!

Der König von Israel aber antwortete und sprach: saget ihm: Es rühme sich nicht der Gegürtete gleich dem, der den Gürtel abgelegt hat.

Es geschah aber, als Benadad diese Antwort hörte, trank er eben mit den Königen in den Zelten und er sprach zu seinen Knechten: Umschließet die Stadt! Und sie umschlossen sie.

Siehe, da kam ein Prophet zu Achab, dem Könige von Israel, und sprach zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Hast du wohl diese ganze große Menge gesehen? Siehe, ich werde sie heute in deine Hand geben, damit du erfahrest, dass ich der Herr bin!

Achab sprach: Durch wen? Er antwortete ihm: So spricht der Herr: Durch die Mannschaften, welche den Obersten der Landschaften folgen. Da fragte er weiter: Wer soll den Kampf beginnen? Jener antwortete: Du.

Hierauf musterte er die Leute der Obersten der Provinzen und fand ihre Zahl zweihundertzweiunddreißig und nach ihnen musterte er das Volk, alle Söhne Israels, siebentausend.

Und sie rückten am Mittage aus. Benadad aber zechte und ward trunken in seinem Zelte und mit ihm die zweiunddreißig Könige, die ihm zu Hilfe gekommen waren.

Und die Leute der Obersten der Landschaften rückten an der Spitze aus. Da sandte Benadad hin und man berichtete ihm und sprach: Es sind Männer aus Samaria ausgerückt.

Er sprach: Kommen sie in friedlicher Absicht, so greifet sie lebendig; oder kommen sie, um zu kämpfen, so nehmet sie lebendig gefangen!

So rückten denn die Leute der Vorsteher der Landschaften aus und das übrige Heer folgte

und ein jeder erschlug den Mann, der ihm entgegentrat; da flohen die Syrer, Israel aber setzte ihnen nach. Und Benadad, der König von Syrien, floh zu Pferd mit seinen Reitern.

Auch der König von Israel zog aus und schlug Ross und Wagen und brachte Syrien eine große Niederlage bei.

(Da trat der Prophet zu dem Könige von Israel und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin, sei stark und schaue und siehe zu, was du tun sollst, denn im nächsten Jahre wird der König von Syrien wider dich heranziehen.)

Die Syrer werden erneut besiegt

Die Diener des Königs von Syrien aber sprachen zu diesem: Berggötter sind ihre Götter, darum haben sie uns überwunden; dagegen ist es besser, in der Ebene mit ihnen zu kämpfen, so werden wir sie überwinden.

Tue also dieses: Entferne alle Könige von deinem Heere und setze Befehlshaber an ihre Stelle.

und ergänze die Zahl der Soldaten, die von den Deinen gefallen sind, und die Rosse zu gleicher Zahl wie die früheren, und die Wagen wie die Wagen, welche du früher gehabt hast, und wir wollen gegen sie in der Ebene kämpfen; dann wirst du sehen, dass wir über sie die Oberhand gewinnen werden. Er vertraute ihrem Rate und tat also.

Als nun ein Jahr vorüber war, musterte Benadad die Syrer und zog nach Aphek, um mit Israel den Kampf zu beginnen.

Die Söhne Israels wurden gleichfalls gemustert und sie empfingen Speisevorrat und zogen ihnen entgegen und schlugen ihr Lager ihnen gegenüber auf, wie zwei kleine Herden Ziegen, die Syrer aber überschwemmten das Land.

(Da kam ein Mann Gottes und sprach zu dem Könige von Israel: So spricht der Herr: Weil die Syrer gesagt haben: Ein Gott der Berge ist der Herr und nicht ein Gott der Täler, so will ich diese ganze große Menge in deine Hand geben und ihr sollt erfahren, dass ich der Herr bin.)

So stellten sie sieben Tage lang ihre Reihen gegenüber auf, am siebenten Tage aber kam es zur Schlacht, und die Söhne Israels schlugen von den Syrern hunderttausend Mann Fußvolk an einem Tage.

Die Übriggebliebenen aber flohen nach Aphek in die Stadt und es fiel die Mauer auf die siebenundzwanzigtausend Mann, die noch übriggeblieben waren. Auch Benadad kam auf der Flucht in die Stadt und verbarg sich im innersten Gemache.

Ahabs Vertrag mit Ben-Hadad

Da sprachen seine Diener zu ihm: Siehe, wir haben gehört, dass die Könige des Hauses Israel barmherzig sind; wir wollen also Trauergewänder um unsere Lenden legen und Stricke um unsere Häupter und zu dem Könige von Israel gehen, vielleicht wird er uns das Leben schenken.

Und sie gürteten Trauergewänder um ihre Lenden und Stricke um ihre Häupter und kamen zu dem Könige von Israel und sprachen zu ihm: Dein Knecht Benadad läßt dir sagen: Lass mich am Leben, ich bitte dich! Jener antwortete: Ist er noch am Leben, so ist er mein Bruder.

Das nahmen die Männer für ein gutes Zeichen und griffen eilig das Wort aus seinem Munde auf und sprachen: Benadad ist dein Bruder! Er sprach zu ihnen: Gehet und führet ihn zu mir! Da kam Benadad zu ihm heraus und er ließ ihn auf seinen Wagen steigen.

Dieser sprach zu ihm: Die Städte, die mein Vater deinem Vater weggenommen hat, will ich zurückgeben; lege dir Straßen in Damaskus an, wie mein Vater in Samaria getan hat, und ich werde als Verbündeter von dir scheiden. Er schloss also einen Bund mit ihm und entließ ihn.

Ahabs Verurteilung

Da sprach einer von den Söhnen der Propheten zu seinem Genossen auf den Befehl des Herrn: Schlage mich! Aber dieser wollte ihn nicht schlagen.

Da sprach jener zu ihm: Weil du nicht auf die Stimme des Herrn hast hören wollen, siehe, so wird ein Löwe dich töten, wenn du von mir gegangen bist. Als er sich nun etwas von ihm entfernt hatte, traf ein Löwe auf ihn und tötete ihn.

Hierauf traf er noch einen andern Mann und sprach zu ihm: Schlage mich! Dieser schlug und verwundete ihn.

Alsbald ging der Prophet hin und stellte sich dem Könige auf dem Wege entgegen und gab sich ein anderes Aussehen, indem er Staub auf seinen Mund und seine Augen streute.

Als nun der König vorüberkam, rief er demselben an und sprach: Dein Knecht war zum Handgemenge in die Schlacht ausgezogen; da floh ein Mann und ein anderer führte ihn zu mir und sprach: Bewahre diesen Mann; wenn er entrinnt, so soll dein Leben für sein Leben einstehen oder du sollst ein Talent Silber zahlen.

Während ich aber bestürzt mich dahin und dorthin wandte, war er plötzlich nicht mehr zu sehen. Da sprach der König von Israel zu ihm: Das ist dein Urteil, das du selbst gefällt hast.

Alsbald wischte er den Staub von seinem Angesichte und der König von Israel erkannte, dass er einer von den Propheten war.

Dieser aber sprach zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Weil du einen Mann, der des Todes würdig war, aus deiner Hand gelassen hast, so soll dein Leben für sein Leben und dein Volk für sein Volk einstehen.

Alsbald kehrte der König von Israel in sein Haus zurück, ohne darauf hören zu wollen, und kam zornschnaubend nach Samaria.
