(1 Chronicles 3:1–9)

There was then long warre betweene the house of Saul and the house of Dauid: but Dauid waxed stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker.

And vnto Dauid were children borne in Hebron: and his eldest sonne was Amnon of Ahinoam the Izreelite,

And his seconde, was Chileab of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite: and the third, Absalom the sonne of Maacah the daughter of Talmai the King of Geshur,

And the fourth, Adoniiah the sonne of Haggith, and the fifth, Shephatiah the sonne of Abital,

And the sixt, Ithream by Eglah Dauids wife: these were borne to Dauid in Hebron.

Abner Joins David

Nowe while there was warre betweene the house of Saul and the house of Dauid, Abner made all his power for the house of Saul.

And Saul had a concubine named Rizpah, the daughter of Aiiah. And Ish-bosheth sayde to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in to my fathers concubine?

Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dogges head, which against Iudah do shew mercie this day vnto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his neighbours, and haue not deliuered thee into the hande of Dauid, that thou chargest me this day with a fault concerning this woman?

So doe God to Abner, and more also, except, as the Lord hath sworne to Dauid, euen so I doe to him,

To remoue the kingdome from the house of Saul, that the throne of Dauid may be stablished ouer Israel, and ouer Iudah, euen from Dan to Beer-sheba.

And he durst no more answere to Abner: for he feared him.

Then Abner sent messengers to Dauid on his behalfe, saying, Whose is the lande? who should also say, Make couenant with me, and beholde, mine hande shalbe with thee, to bring all Israel vnto thee.

Who saide, Well, I will make a couenant with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, that thou see not my face except thou bring Michal Sauls daughter when thou commest to see me.

Then Dauid sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Sauls sonne, saying, Deliuer me my wife Michal, which I marryed for an hundreth foreskinnes of the Philistims.

And Ish-bosheth sent, and tooke her from her husband Phaltiel the sonne of Laish.

And her husband went with her, and came weeping behinde her, vnto Bahurim: then saide Abner vnto him, Go, and returne. So he returned.

And Abner had communication with the Elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for Dauid in times past, that he might be your King.

Nowe then doe it: for the Lord hath spoken of Dauid, saying, By the hand of my seruant Dauid I will saue my people Israel out of the handes of the Philistims, and out of the handes of all their enemies.

Also Abner spake to Beniamin, and afterward Abner went to speake with Dauid in Hebron, concerning all that Israel was content with, and the whole house of Beniamin.

So Abner came to Dauid to Hebron, hauing twentie men with him, and Dauid made a feast vnto Abner, and to the men that were with him.

Then Abner sayde vnto Dauid, I will rise vp, and goe gather all Israel vnto my lorde the King, that they may make a couenant with thee, and that thou mayest reigne ouer all that thine heart desireth. Then Dauid let Abner depart, who went in peace.

Joab Murders Abner

And beholde, the seruants of Dauid and Ioab came from the campe, and brought a great pray with them (but Abner was not with Dauid in Hebron: for he had sent him away, and he departed in peace)

When Ioab, and all the hoste that was with him were come, men tolde Ioab, saying, Abner the sonne of Ner came to the King, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.

Then Ioab came to the King, and saide, What hast thou done? beholde, Abner came vnto thee, why hast thou sent him away, and he is departed?

Thou knowest Abner the sonne of Ner: for he came to deceiue thee, and to knowe thy outgoing and ingoing, and to knowe all that thou doest.

And when Ioab was gone out from Dauid, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him againe from the well of Siriah vnknowing to Dauid.

And when Abner was come againe to Hebron, Ioab tooke him aside in the gate to speake with him peaceably, and smote him vnder the fift ryb, that he dyed, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

And when afterwarde it came to Dauids eare, he saide, I and my kingdome are giltlesse before the Lord for euer, concerning the blood of Abner the sonne of Ner.

Let the blood fall on the head of Ioab, and on all his fathers house, that the house of Ioab be neuer without some that haue running issues, or leper, or that leaneth on a staffe, or that doeth fall on the sworde, or that lacketh bread.

(So Ioab and Abishai his brother slewe Abner, because he had slaine their brother Asahel at Gibeon in battel)

David Mourns for Abner

And Dauid said to Ioab, and to al the people that were with him, Rent your clothes, and put on sackecloth, and mourne before Abner: and King Dauid him selfe followed the beare.

And when they had buryed Abner in Hebron, the King lift vp his voyce, and wept beside the sepulchre of Abner, and all the people wept.

And the King lamented ouer Abner, and sayde, Dyed Abner as a foole dyeth?

Thine handes were not bounde, nor thy feete tyed in fetters of brasse: but as a man falleth before wicked men, so diddest thou fall. And all the people wept againe for him.

Afterwarde all the people came to cause Dauid eate meate while it was yet day, but Dauid sware, saying, So doe God to me and more also, if I taste bread, or ought els till the sunne be downe.

And all the people knewe it, and it pleased them: as whatsoeuer the King did, pleased all the people.

For all the people and all Israel vnderstoode that day, howe that it was not the Kings deede that Abner the sonne of Ner was slaine.

And the King said vnto his seruants, Know ye not, that there is a prince and a great man falle this day in Israel?

And I am this day weake and newly anoynted King: and these men the sonnes of Zeruiah be too harde for me: the Lord rewarde the doer of euill according to his wickednesse.

Die Fehde also zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids wurde langwierig und David nahm zu und ward immer stärker, das Haus Sauls aber nahm täglich ab.

Davids Söhne

Und es wurden dem David in Hebron Söhne geboren; sein Erstgeborner war Amnon, von Achinoam, der Jezrahelitin;

und nach ihm kam Cheleab, von Abigail, dem Weibe Nabals von Karmel; der dritte war Absalom, der Sohn Maachas, der Tochter Tholmais, des Königs von Gessur;

der vierte Adonais, ein Sohn Haggiths; der fünfte Saphathia, der Sohn Abitals,

und der sechste Jethraam von Egla, dem Weibe Davids. Diese wurden David zu Hebron geboren.

Abner verbündet sich mit David

Während nun der Kampf zwischen dem Hause Sauls und dem Hause Davids währte, leitete Abner, der Sohn Ners, das Haus Sauls.

Saul aber hatte eine Nebenfrau gehabt mit Namen Respha, eine Tochter Ajas. Und Isboseth sprach zu Abner:

Warum bist du zu der Nebenfrau meines Vaters gegangen? Da ergrimmte Abner sehr über die Worte Isboseths und sprach: Bin ich denn heut ein Hundskopf gegen Juda, ich, der ich an dem Hause Sauls, deines Vaters, und an seinen Brüdern und Verwandten Barmherzigkeit geübt und dich nicht in die Hand Davids überliefert habe, dass du mich zur Rede stellst und mir heut um eines Weibes willen Vorwürfe machst?

Gott tue Abner dies und das, wenn ich das, was der Herr David geschworen hat, nicht an ihm in Erfüllung bringe,

dass die Königswürde von dem Hause Sauls genommen und der Thron Davids über Israel und über Juda von Dan bis Bersabee erhoben werde.

Jener aber konnte ihm nichts antworten, weil er ihn fürchtete.

So sandte Abner also Boten zu David, dass sie in seinem Namen sagten: Wem gehört das Land? Und dass sie sprachen: Schließe Freundschaft mit mir, so soll meine Hand dir hilfreich sein und ich will dir das gesamte Israel zuführen.

David sprach: Sehr gut! Ich will mit dir Freundschaft schließen, nur fordere ich eine Sache von dir, nämlich: Du wirst mein Angesicht nicht sehen, ehe du mir Michol, die Tochter Sauls, zugeführt hast; wenn du so kommst, wirst du mich sehen.

Auch sandte David Boten an Isboseth, den Sohn Sauls, und sprach: Gib mein Weib Michol zurück, welche ich mir um hundert Vorhäute der Philister verlobt habe.

Da sandte Isboseth hin und ließ sie ihrem Manne Phalthiel, dem Sohne von Lais, nehmen.

Und ihr Mann folgte ihr weinend bis nach Bahurim. Da sprach Abner zu ihm: Gehe und kehre zurück! Und er kehrte zurück.

Auch redete Abner mit den Ältesten Israels und sprach: Schon gestern und ehedem habt ihr verlangt, dass David über euch König sei;

so führt es denn jetzt aus, denn der Herr hat David verheißen: Durch meinen Diener David will ich mein Volk Israel aus der Hand der Philister und aller seiner Feinde erretten.

Ebenso redete Abner zu Benjamin. Dann ging er hin, um David in Hebron alles zu sagen, was Israel und ganz Benjamin beschlossen hatte.

Als er nun mit zwanzig Männern zu David nach Hebron kam, richtete David Abner und seinen Leuten, die mit ihm kamen, ein Gastmahl an.

Und Abner sprach zu David: Ich will mich aufmachen, um ganz Israel zu dir, meinem Herrn, dem Könige, zu versammeln, und will einen Bund mit dir schließen, dass du über alle herrschest, wie dein Herz begehrt. Darnach gab David dem Abner das Geleit und er ging hin in Frieden.

Joab ermordet Abner

Da kamen alsbald die Leute Davids und Joabs, welche Räuber geschlagen hatten, mit sehr großer Beute zurück; Abner aber war nicht mehr bei David in Hebron, denn dieser hatte ihn bereits entlassen und er war in Frieden fortgegangen.

Als nun Joab und das ganze Heer, das bei ihm war, später kamen und man dem Joab berichtete und erzählte: Abner, der Sohn Ners, ist zum Könige gekommen und dieser hat ihn ziehen lassen und er ist in Frieden weggegangen,

ging Joab zum Könige und sprach: Was hast du getan? Siehe, Abner ist zu dir gekommen; warum hast du ihn entlassen, dass er wegging und sich entfernte?

Weißt du nicht, dass Abner, der Sohn Ners, zu dir gekommen ist, um dich zu hintergehen und deinen Ausgang und deinen Eingang zu erkunden und alles, was du tust, zu erfahren?

Als Joab nun David verlassen hatte, sandte er Abner Boten nach und ließ ihn von dem Brunnen Sira zurückholen, ohne dass David das wusste.

Und da Abner nach Hebron zurückgekommen war, führte ihn Joab hinterlistigerweise abseits mitten unter das Tor, als wollte er mit ihm reden, und stach ihn daselbst in den Unterleib, dass er starb, zur Rache für das Blut seines Bruders Asael.

Als David dies erfuhr, nachdem es schon geschehen war, sprach er: Ich und mein Königtum sind auf immer vor dem Herrn unschuldig an dem Blute Abners, des Sohnes Ners;

möge es auf das Haupt Joabs und auf das ganze Haus seines Vaters kommen und mögen in dem Hause Joab solche kein Ende nehmen, die an Samenfluss und Aussatz leiden, und solche, welche an der Krücke gehen, die durch das Schwert fallen, und die kein Brot haben!

So töteten Joab und sein Bruder Abisai den Abner, weil er ihren Bruder Asael zu Gabaon im Kampfe getötet hatte.

Davids Trauer um Abner

David aber sprach zu Joab und zu dem ganzen Volke, das bei ihm war: Zerreißet eure Kleider und leget Säcke an und gehet wehklagend vor der Leiche Abners her! Der König David aber ging hinter der Bahre.

Als sie nun Abner in Hebron begraben hatten, erhob der König David seine Stimme und weinte über dem Grabe Abners, aber auch das ganze Volk weinte.

Und der König beklagte und beweinte den Abner und sprach: Nicht wie Feige zu sterben pflegen, ist Abner gestorben!

Deine Hände waren nicht gebunden und deine Füße waren nicht von Fesseln beschwert, sondern du bist zu Fall gekommen, wie man von Söhnen der Ruchlosigkeit zu fallen pflegt! Da weinte alles Volk noch mehr über ihn.

Als nun das ganze Volk kam, um mit David Speise zu nehmen, schwur David, während es noch heller Tag war, und sprach: Gott tue mir dies und das, wenn ich vor Untergang der Sonne Brot oder etwas anderes genieße.

Das ganze Volk hörte dies und es gefiel ihnen alles, was der König angesichts des ganzen Volkes getan hatte.

Und das ganze Volk und ganz Israel erkannte an jenem Tage, dass es nicht von dem Könige ausgegangen war, dass Abner, der Sohn Ners, getötet ward.

Auch sprach der König zu seinen Dienern: Wisset ihr nicht, dass heute ein Fürst und der größte in Israel gefallen ist?

Ich bin aber noch ein schwacher König und erst gesalbt, und jene Männer, die Söhne Sarvias, sind mir zu stark. Möge der Herr dem, der Böses tat, nach seiner Bosheit vergelten!
