- Kapitel 21 -

Moreouer, the men of Israel sware in Mizpeh, saying, None of vs shall giue his daughter vnto the Beniamites to wyfe.

And the people came vnto ye house of God and abode there till euen before God, and lift vp their voyces, and wept with great lamentation,

And sayde, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to passe in Israel, that this day one tribe of Israel should want?

And on the morow the people rose vp and made there an altar, and offred burnt offrings and peace offrings.

Then the children of Israel said, Who is he among all the tribes of Israel, that came not vp with the Congregation vnto the Lord? for they had made a great othe concerning him that came not vp to the Lord to Mizpeh, saying, Let him die the death.

And the children of Israel were sory for Beniamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

How shall we do for wiues to them that remaine, seeing we haue sworne by the Lord, that we will not giue them of our daughters to wiues?

Also they saide, Is there any of the tribes of Israel that came not vp to Mizpeh to the Lord? and beholde, there came none of Iabesh Gilead vnto the hoste and to the Congregation.

For when the people were vewed; beholde, none of the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead were there.

Therefore the Congregation sent thither twelue thousande men of the most valiant, and commanded them, saying, Goe, and smite the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, both women, and children.

And this is it that ye shall do: ye shall vtterly destroye all the males and all the women that haue lien by men.

And they found among the inhabitants of Iabesh Gilead foure hundreth maides, virgins that had knowne no man by lying with any male: and they brought them vnto the hoste to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

Then the whole Congregation sent and spake with the children of Beniamin that were in the rocke of Rimmon, and called peaceably vnto them:

And Beniamin came againe at that time, and they gaue them wiues which they had saued aliue of the women of Iabesh Gilead: but they had not so ynough for them.

And the people were sorie for Beniamin, because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

Therefore the Elders of the Congregation said, How shall we doe for wiues to the remnant? for the women of Beniamin are destroyed.

And they saide, there must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Beniamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

Howbeit we may not giue them wiues of our daughters: for the childre of Israel had sworne, saying, Cursed be he that giueth a wise to Beniamin.

Therefore they said, Beholde, there is a feast of the Lord euery yere in Shiloh in a place, which is on the Northside of Beth-el, and on the Eastside of the way that goeth vp from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the South of Lebonah.

Therefore they commanded the children of Beniamin, saying, Goe, and lye in waite in the vineyardes.

And when ye see that the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catche you euery man a wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and goe into the land of Beniamin.

And when their fathers or their brethren come vnto vs to complaine, we wil say vnto them, Haue pitie on them for our sakes, because we reserued not to eche man his wife in the warre, and because ye haue not giuen vnto them hitherto, ye haue sinned.

And the children of Beniamin did so, and tooke wiues of them that danced according to their nomber: which they tooke, and went away, and returned to their inheritance, and repaired the cities and dwelt in them.

So the children of Israel departed thence at that time, euery man to his tribe, and to his familie, and went out from thence euery man to his inheritance.

In those dayes there was no King in Israel, but euery man did that which was good in his eyes.

Ehefrauen für die Benjaminiter

Nun hatten die Söhne Israels in Maspha geschworen und gesagt: Keiner von uns darf den Söhnen Benjamins eine von seinen Töchtern als Frau geben.

Sie kamen also alle zum Hause Gottes nach Silo und setzten sich vor dem Angesichte Gottes bis zum Abend nieder, erhoben ihre Stimme und weinten mit lautem Schluchzen und riefen:

Warum, o Herr, du Gott Israels! musste dies Unglück unter deinem Volke geschehen, dass heute ein ganzer Stamm von uns hinweggenommen ist?

Am andern Tage standen sie früh auf, errichteten einen Altar, brachten auf demselben Brandopfer und Friedopfer dar und sprachen:

Wer aus allen Stämmen Israels ist nicht im Heere des Herrn mitgezogen? Mit schwerem Eidschwur nämlich hatten sie sich zu Maspha verpflichtet, die zu töten, welche ausblieben.

Und von Herzeleid über ihren Bruder Benjamin ergriffen, fingen die Söhne Israels an zu sagen: Es ist ein Stamm hinweggenommen aus Israel!

Woher sollen sie Frauen nehmen? Wir haben ja alle insgesamt geschworen, dass wir ihnen unsere Töchter nicht geben wollen.

Darum sprachen sie: Wer ist von allen Stämmen Israels, der nicht zu dem Herrn nach Maspha hinaufgezogen ist? Und siehe, es fand sich, dass die Einwohner von Jabes Galaad nicht in jenem Heere gewesen waren.

(Auch zur Zeit, wo man in Silo war, fand sich niemand von ihnen daselbst.)

Da sandten sie zehntausend tapfere Männer aus mit der Weisung: Ziehet hin und schlaget die Einwohner von Jabes Galaad mit der Schärfe des Schwertes, sowohl ihre Weiber als ihre Kinder.

Doch dies müsst ihr beobachten: Alles, was männlich ist, und die Frauen, welche schon Männer erkannt haben, tötet; aber die Jungfrauen lasset am Leben!

Und es fanden sich aus Jabes Galaad vierhundert Jungfrauen, welches keines Mannes Ehebett kannten; diese brachten sie in das Lager zu Silo im Lande Chanaan.

Und sie sandten Boten zu den Söhnen Benjamins, welche auf der Felsenhöhle von Remmon waren, und entboten ihnen, sie wollten sie in Frieden aufnehmen.

Zu jener Zeit kamen die Söhne Benjamins, und man gab ihnen Frauen von den Töchtern von Jabes Galaad; andere aber fanden sie keine, die man ihnen auf gleiche Weise hätte geben können.

Da schmerzte es ganz Israel sehr und es bereute, einen Stamm in Israel dem Untergange geweiht zu haben,

und die Ältesten sprachen: Was sollen wir mit den Übriggebliebenen tun, die noch keine Frauen erhalten haben? Denn alle Frauen in Benjamin sind gefallen!

Mit großer Sorgfalt und mit allem Eifer haben wir Vorsorge zu treffen, dass nicht ein Stamm aus Israel ausgetilgt werde.

Denn unsere Töchter können wir ihnen nicht geben; sind wir doch durch den Eidschwur und den Fluch gebunden, da wir sprachen: Verflucht sei, wer den Benjamitern von seinen Töchtern ein Weib gibt!

Sie fassten also den Beschluss und sprachen: Sehet, es ist das Jahresfest des Herrn in Silo, welches nördlich von der Stadt Bethel und östlich von dem Wege liegt, der von Bethel nach Sichem führt, und südlich von der Stadt Lebona.

Und sie befahlen den Söhnen Benjamins und sprachen: Gehet hin und haltet euch in den Weinbergen verborgen!

Und wenn ihr die Töchter von Silo zum Reigen, wie gebräuchlich, herausziehen seht, so brechet schnell aus den Weinbergen hervor und raubet euch aus ihnen ein jeder ein Weib und gehet in das Land Benjamin.

Wenn dann ihre Väter und Brüder kommen und anfangen wider euch zu klagen und zu rechten, so wollen wir ihnen sagen: Habet Erbarmen mit ihnen; denn sie haben dieselben nicht nach Kriegsrecht oder als Sieger geraubt, sondern ihr habt, da sie darum baten, sie nehmen zu dürfen, ihnen dieselben nicht gegeben, und die Schuld ist also auf eurer Seite.

Hierauf taten die Söhne Benjamins, wie ihnen geboten war; und sie raubten sich, so viel ihrer waren, ein jeder aus den Tanzenden, ein Weib und zogen fort in ihren Besitz und bauten sich Städte und wohnten darin.

Auch die Söhne Israels kehrten nach ihren Stämmen und Familien in ihre Wohnungen zurück. Zu jener Zeit war kein König in Israel, sondern jeder tat, was ihm recht dünkte.
