Levi’s sons were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Kohath’s sons were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

Amram’s children were Miriam and her younger brothers Aaron and Moses. Aaron’s sons were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Eleazar was the father of Phinehas. Phinehas was the father of Abishua.

Abishua was the father of Bukki. Bukki was the father of Uzzi.

Uzzi was the father of Zerahiah. Zerahiah was the father of Meraioth.

Meraioth was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub.

Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Ahimaaz.

Ahimaaz was the father of Azariah. Azariah was the father of Johanan.

Johanan was the father of Azariah. Azariah was a priest in the temple that Solomon commanded to be built in Jerusalem.

Azariah was the father of Amariah. Amariah was the father of Ahitub.

Ahitub was the father of Zadok. Zadok was the father of Shallum.

Shallum was the father of Hilkiah. Hilkiah was the father of Azariah.

Azariah was the father of Seraiah. Seraiah was the father of Jozadak.

Jozadak was forced to leave his home when Yahweh sent King Nebuchadnezzar’s army to capture many people in Jerusalem and other places in Judah and compel them to go to Babylonia.

Levi’s sons were Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

Gershon’s sons were Libni and Shimei.

Kohath’s sons were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel.

Merari’s sons were Mahli and Mushi. Here is a list of the descendants of Levi, who became leaders of their clans.

Gershon’s oldest son was Libni. Libni’s son was Jahath. Jehath’s son was Zimmah.

Zimmah’s son was Joah. Joah’s son was Iddo. Iddo’s son was Zerah. Zerah’s son was Jeatherai.

Kohath’s other son was Amminadab. Amminadab’s son was Korah. Korah’s son was Assir.

Assir’s son was Elkanah. Elkanah’s son was Ebiasaph. Ebiasaph’s son was Assir.

Assir’s son was Tahath. Tahath’s son was Uriel. Uriel’s son was Uzziah. Uzziah’s son was Shaul.

Elkanah’s sons were Amasai, Ahimoth,

and a son also named Elkana. Elkanah’s son was Zophai. Zophai’s son was Nahath.

The Temple Musicians

After the sacred chest was brought to Jerusalem, King David appointed some of the men who were descendants of Levi to be in charge of the music in the place where the people worshiped Yahweh.

Those musicians first sang and played their instruments in the sacred tent, which was also called the tent of meeting, and they continued to do that until Solomon’s workers built the temple of Yahweh in Jerusalem. In all their work, they obeyed the instructions that David had given them.

Here is a list of the musicians and their sons: From Kohath’s descendants there was Heman, the leader of the singers. Heman was the son of Joel. Joel was the son of Samuel.

Samuel was the son of Elkanah. Elkanah was the son of Jeroham. Jeroham was the son of Eliel. Eliel was the son of Toah.

Toah was the son of Zuph. Zuph was the son of Elkanah. Elkanah was the son of Mahath. Mahath was the son of Amasai.

Amasai was the son of another man whose name was Elkanah. Elkanah was the son of Joel. Joel was the son of Azariah. Azariah was the son of Zephaniah.

Zephaniah was the son of Tahath. Tahath was the son of Assir. Assir was the son of Ebiasaph. Ebiasaph was the son of Korah.

Korah was the son of Izhar. Izhar was the son of Kohath. Kohath was the son of Levi. Levi was the son of Jacob.

Heman’s helper was Asaph. His group stood at the right side of Heman. Asaph was the son of Berekiah. Berekiah was the son of Shimea.

Shimea was the son of Michael. Michael was the son of Baaseiah. Baaseiah was the son of Malkijah.

Malkijah was the son of Ethni. Ethni was the son of Zerah. Zerah was the son of Adaiah.

Shimei was the son of Jahath. Jahath was the son of Gershon, and Gershon was the son of Levi.

A group of singers from Merari’s family helped Heman and Asaph. They stood at the left of Heman. The leader of this group was Ethan son of Kishi. Kishi was the son of Abdi. Abdi was the son of Malluk.

Malluk was the son of Hashabiah. Hashabiah was the son of Uzziah. Uzziah was the son of Hilkiah.

Hilkiah was the son of Amzi. Amzi was the son of Bani. Bani was the son of Shemer.

Shemer was the son of Mahli. Mahli was the son of Mushi. Mushi was the son of Merari, and Merari was the son of Levi.

The Descendants of Aaron

The other descendants of Levi were appointed to do other work in the sacred tent, the place where the people worshiped God.

Aaron and his descendants were the ones who placed on the altar the sacrifices that were to be burned completely, and they burned incense on another altar. Those sacrifices were in order that Yahweh would no longer be angry with the people of Israel for having sinned. Those men also did other work in the very holy place in the sacred tent, obeying the instructions that Moses, who served God well, had given to them.

These were the descendants of Aaron: Aaron’s son was Eleazar. Eleazar’s son was Phinehas. Phinehas’s son was Abishua.

Abishua’s son was Bukki. Bukki’s son was Uzzi. Uzzi’s son was Zerahiah.

Zerahiah’s son was Meraioth. Meraioth’s son was Amariah. Amariah’s son was Ahitub.

Ahitub’s son was Zadok, and Zadok’s son was Ahimaaz.

Territories for the Levites

(Numbers 35:1–8; Joshua 21:1–45)

Here is a list of the places where Aaron’s descendants lived. Those who were descendants of Kohath were the first group to be allotted cities to live in.

They were allotted the city of Hebron in Judah and the pastureland around the city,

but the fields farther from the city and the villages near the city were given to Caleb’s son of Jephunneh.

The descendants of Aaron who were descendants of Kohath were allotted Hebron, one of the cities to which people could flee and be protected if they accidentally killed someone. They also were allotted the towns and pastureland near Libnah, Jattir, Eshtemoa,

Hilen, Debir,

Ashan, Juttah, and Beth Shemesh.

They were also allotted the cities of Gibeon, Geba, Alemeth, and Anathoth from the tribe of Benjamin. Altogether, these clans descended from Kohath were allotted thirteen cities.

The other clans descended from Kohath were allotted ten cities from the clans of the tribe of Manasseh that lived west of the Jordan River.

The descendants of Gershon were allotted thirteen cities and towns from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the part of the tribe of Manasseh that lived in the region of Bashan on the east side of the Jordan River.

The descendants of Merari were allotted twelve cities and towns from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

The leaders of Israel allotted those towns and the nearby pasturelands to the descendants of Levi.

They also allotted to them the cities and towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin that were listed previously.

Some of the descendants of Kohath were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim.

They were allotted Shechem, which was one of the cities to which people could flee and be protected if they accidentally killed someone, along with the nearby pastureland in the hills of Ephraim. They were also allotted these towns and pastureland near them: Gezer,

Jokmeam, Beth Horon,

Aijalon, and Gath Rimmon.

The other descendants of Kohath were allotted the cities of Aner and Bileam and the nearby pastureland from the part of the tribe of Manasseh that lives west of the Jordan River.

The descendants of Gershon, who were part of the tribe of Manasseh, lived east of the Jordan River. They were allotted the cities and towns and pastureland near them: Golan in the regions of Bashan and Ashtaroth.

From the tribe of Issachar they were allotted cities and towns and pastureland near Kedesh, Daberath,

Ramoth, and Anem.

From the tribe of Asher they were allotted cities and towns and pastureland near Mashal, Abdon,

Hukok, and Rehob.

From the tribe of Naphtali they were allotted cities and towns and pastureland near Kedesh in the region of Galilee, and the cities of Hammon and Kiriathaim.

The other descendants of Levi, those descended from Merari, were allotted towns and pasturelands from the tribe of Zebulun near Jokneam, Kartah, Rimmono, and Tabor.

From the tribe of Reuben they were allotted cities and towns and pastureland near Bezer in the wilderness, Jahzah, Kedemoth, and Mephaath.

The tribe of Reuben lived east of the Jordan River, across from Jericho.

From the tribe of Gad, they were allotted cities and towns and pastureland near Ramoth in the region of Gilead, Mahanaim,

Musikanten im Haus des HERRN

Diese sind es, welche David über die Sänger im Hause des Herrn setzte, nachdem die Lade an ihren Ort gebracht war,

und sie dienten vor dem Zelte des Zeugnisses als Sänger, bis Salomon das Haus des Herrn zu Jerusalem baute; sie taten aber Dienst nach ihrer Reihenfolge.

Dies aber sind die, welche mit ihren Söhnen Dienst taten: Von den Söhnen Kaaths: Hemam, der Sänger, der Sohn Johels, des Sohnes Samuels,

des Sohnes Elkanas, des Sohnes Jerohams, des Sohnes Eliels, des Sohnes Thohus,

des Sohnes Suphs, des Sohnes Elkanas, des Sohnes Mahaths, des Sohnes Amasais,
36
des Sohnes Elkanas, des Sohnes Johels, des Sohnes Azarias, des Sohnes Sophonias,
37
des Sohnes Thahaths, des Sohnes Asirs, des Sohnes Abiasaphs, des Sohnes Kores,
38
des Sohnes Isaars, des Sohnes Kaaths, des Sohnes Levis, des Sohnes Israels.

Und sein Bruder Asaph, der zu seiner Rechten stand, Asaph, der Sohn des Barachias, des Sohnes Samaas,

des Sohnes Michaels, des Sohnes Basajas, des Sohnes Melchias,
41
des Sohnes Athanais, des Sohnes Zaras, des Sohnes Adajas,
42
des Sohnes Ethans, des Sohnes Zammas, des Sohnes Semeis,

des Sohnes Jeths, des Sohnes Gersoms, des Sohnes Levis.

Und die Söhne Meraris, ihre Brüder, waren zur Linken: Ethan, der Sohn Kusis, des Sohnes Abdis, des Sohnes Malochs,

des Sohnes Hasabias, des Sohnes Amasias, des Sohnes Helkias,
46
des Sohnes Amasais, des Sohnes Bonis, des Sohnes Somers,
47
des Sohnes Moholis, des Sohnes Musis, des Sohnes Meraris, des Sohnes Levis.

Und ihre Brüder, die Leviten, waren für den gesamten Dienst am Zelte des Hauses des Herrn bestellt.

Aaron aber und seine Söhne brachten die Opfer auf dem Brandopferaltar dar und auf dem Räucheraltar, zu allem Dienste am Allerheiligsten, und um für Israel zu beten, dem gemäß, was Moses, der Diener Gottes, geboten.

Dies aber sind die Söhne Aarons: Eleazar, sein Sohn, dessen Sohn Phinees, dessen Sohn Abisue,

dessen Sohn Bokki, dessen Sohn Ozi, dessen Sohn Zarahia,
52
dessen Sohn Merajoth, dessen Sohn Amarias, dessen Sohn Achitob,
53
dessen Sohn Sadok, dessen Sohn Achimaas.

Die Wohnstätten der Leviten

Und dies sind ihre Wohnsitze nach ihren Niederlassungen und Grenzen, der Söhne Aarons nämlich nach den Familien der Kaathiter, denn ihnen waren sie durch das Los zugefallen.

Ihnen hatte man Hebron im Lande Juda gegeben und seine Weideplätze ringsum;

die Äcker der Stadt aber und die Flecken gaben sie Kaleb, dem Sohne des Jephone.

Den Söhnen Aarons aber gaben sie die Zufluchtsstädte Hebron und Lobna und seine Weideplätze,
58
ebenso Jether und Esthemo samt ihren Weideplätzen, wie auch Helon und Dabir mit ihren Weideplätzen,
59
auch Asan und Bethsemes und ihre Weideplätze.
60
Vom Stamme Benjamin aber: Gabee und seine Weideplätze, Almath mit seinen Weideplätzen und Anathoth mit seinen Weideplätzen, zusammen dreizehn Städte nach ihren Familien.

Aber den übrigen Söhnen Kaaths von seinem Geschlechte gaben sie aus dem halben Stamme Manasse zehn Städte zum Besitze.
62
Den Söhnen Gersoms ferner nach ihren Familien vom Stamme Issachar und vom Stamme Aser und vom Stamme Nephthali und vom Stamme Manasse in Basan dreizehn Städte.

Den Söhnen Meraris aber gaben sie nach ihren Familien durch das Los vom Stamme Ruben und vom Stamme Gad und vom Stamme Zabulon zwölf Städte.

So gaben die Söhne Israels den Leviten die Städte samt deren Weideplätzen,
65
und zwar geben sie durch das Los vom Stamme der Söhne Judas und vom Stamme der Söhne Simeons und vom Stamme der Söhne Benjamins diese Städte, welche sie nach ihren Namen benannten;
66
denen, welche vom Geschlechte der Söhne Kaaths waren; diese hatten an ihren Grenzen Städte vom Stamme Ephraim.

Sie gaben ihnen also die Zufluchtsstädte Sichem mit seinen Weideplätzen auf dem Gebirge Ephraim und Gazer mit seinen Weideplätzen,
68
auch Jekmaam mit seinen Weideplätzen und ebenso Bethoron,
69
dazu Helon mit seinen Weideplätzen und Gethremmon gleicher Weise.
70
Ferner aus dem halben Stamme Manasse Aner und seine Weideplätze, Balaam und seine Weideplätze; denen nämlich, die vom Geschlechte der Söhne Kaaths übrig waren.

Den Söhnen Gersoms aber gaben sie aus dem Geschlechte das halben Stammes Manasse Gaulon in Basan und seine Weideplätze und Astharoth mit seinen Weideplätzen.

Aus dem Stamme Issachar: Kedes und seine Weideplätze und Dabereth mit seinen Weideplätzen;

auch Ramoth und seine Weideplätze und Anem und dessen Weideplätzen.

Aus dem Stamme Aser aber: Masal mit seinen Weideplätzen und ebenso Abdon,

und Hukak und seine Weideplätze und Rohob samt seinen Weideplätzen.

Aus dem Stamme Nephthali: Kedes in Galiläa und seine Weideplätze, Hamon mit seinen Weideplätzen und Kariathaim und seine Weideplätze.

Den übrigen Söhnen Meraris aber gaben sie aus dem Stamme Zabulon Remmono und seine Weideplätze und Thabor mit seinen Weideplätzen;

und jenseits des Jordans Jericho gegenüber im Osten des Jordans, aus dem Stamme Ruben Bosor in der Wüste mit seinen Weideplätzen und Jassa mit seinen Weideplätzen,

auch Kademoth und seine Weideplätze und Mephaat mit seinen Weideplätzen.

Dazu auch aus dem Stamme Gad: Ramoth in Galaad und seine Weideplätze und Mainaim mit seinen Weideplätzen,

wie auch Hesebon mit seinen Weideplätzen und Jezer mit seinen Weideplätzen.
