- Kapitel 2 -

When Yahweh was about to take the prophet Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and his fellow prophet Elisha were traveling south from Gilgal.

Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, because Yahweh has told only me to go to the city of Bethel.” But Elisha replied, “Just as certainly as Yahweh lives and you live, I will not leave you!” So they went down together to Bethel.

An association of prophets at Bethel came to Elisha and Elijah; they asked Elisha, “Do you know that Yahweh is going to take your master Elijah away from you today?” Elisha answered, “Certainly I know that, but do not talk about it!”

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, because Yahweh has told only me to go to Jericho.” But Elisha replied again, “Just as certainly as Yahweh lives and you live, I will not leave you!” So they went together to the city of Jericho.

As they neared Jericho, another association of prophets who were from there came to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that Yahweh is going to take your master Elijah away from you today?” He answered again, “Certainly I know that, but do not talk about it!”

Then Elijah said to Elisha, “Stay here, because Yahweh has told only me to go to the Jordan River.” But again Elisha replied, “As certainly as Yahweh lives and you live, I will not leave you!” So they continued walking together.

Fifty men from the association of prophets who were from Jericho also went, but they watched from a distance as Elijah and Elisha stopped at the edge of the Jordan River.

Then Elijah rolled up his cloak and struck the water with it. A path opened up for them through the river, and they walked across as though they were on dry ground.

When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “What do you want me to do for you before I am taken away?” Elisha replied, “I want to receive twice as much of your power as the other prophets have.”

Elijah replied, “You have asked for something which is difficult for me to make happen. But if you see me when I am taken from you, you will get what you are requesting. But if you do not see me, then you will not get it.”

As they were walking and talking, suddenly a chariot surrounded by fire pulled by horses surrounded by fire, appeared. The chariot driver drove the chariot between Elijah and Elisha and separated them. Then Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind.

Elisha saw it. He cried out, “My father! My father! The Israelite chariots and their drivers have taken my master away!” They disappeared into the sky, and Elisha never saw Elijah again. Then Elisha tore his own robe into two pieces to show that he was deeply saddened.

Elijah’s cloak had fallen off when he was taken away, so Elisha picked it up and returned to the bank of the Jordan River.

He rolled up the cloak and struck the water with it, and cried out, “Is Yahweh, the God of Elijah, here with me, too?” Then the water separated, and a path opened up for him, and Elisha went across.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

When the association of prophets from Jericho saw what happened, they exclaimed, “Elisha now has the power that Elijah had!” They walked over to Elisha and bowed down in front of him.

One of them said, “Sir, if you permit us, fifty of our strongest men will go and search for your master on the other side of the river. Perhaps the Spirit of Yahweh has left him on some mountain or in some valley.” Elisha replied, “No, do not send them.”

But they continued to urge him. Finally he was tired of saying “No,” and he said, “Very well, send them.” So fifty men searched for three days, but they did not find Elijah.

They returned to Jericho, and Elisha was still there. He said to them, “I told you that you should not go, because you would not find him!”

Elisha Heals the Waters of Jericho

Then the leaders of Jericho came to talk with Elisha. One of them said, “Our master, we have a problem. You can see that this is a very nice place to live in. But the water is bad, and as a result, crops will not grow on the land.”

Elisha said to them, “Put some salt in a new bowl and bring the bowl to me.” So they brought it to him.

Then Elisha went out to the spring from which the people in the town got water. He threw the salt into the spring. Then he said, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘I have made this water good. No one will die anymore because of bad water, and the land will grow fruitful crops.’”

And the water became pure, just as Elisha said it would. Since that time it has always remained pure.

Elisha Mocked

Elisha left Jericho and went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, a group of young boys from Bethel saw him and started to make fun of him. They continued shouting, “Go away, you bald-headed man!”

Elisha turned around and reprimanded them in the name of Yahweh. Immediately two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them.

Elisha left Bethel and went to Mount Carmel, and after that he returned to the city of Samaria.

Es begab sich aber zu der Zeit, da der Herr den Elias im Sturme gen Himmel aufheben wollte, gingen Elias und Eliseus von Galgala fort.

Und Elias sprach zu Eliseus: Bleibe hier, denn der Herr sendet mich nach Bethel. Eliseus aber antwortete ihm: So wahr der Herr lebt und du lebst, werde ich dich nicht verlassen! Als sie nun nach Bethel gekommen waren,

gingen die Söhne der Propheten, welche in Bethel waren, zu Eliseus hinaus und sprachen zu ihm: Weißt du, dass der Herr heute deinen Herrn von dir nehmen wird? Er antwortete: Auch ich weiß es, schweiget still!

Da sprach Elias zu Eliseus: Bleibe hier, denn der Herr sendet mich nach Jericho. Dieser erwiderte: So wahr der Herr lebt und du lebst, ich werde dich nicht verlassen. Als sie nun nach Jericho kamen,

traten die Söhne der Propheten, die in Jericho waren, zu Eliseus und sprachen zu ihm: Weißt du dass der Herr heute deinen Herrn von dir nehmen wird? Er sprach: Auch ich weiß es, schweiget still!

Elias aber sprach zu ihm: Bleibe hier, denn der Herr sendet mich an den Jordan. Er antwortete: So wahr der Herr lebt und deine Seele lebt, ich werde dich nicht verlassen! So gingen denn beide miteinander

und fünfzig von den Söhnen der Propheten folgten ihnen und blieben gegenüber in der Ferne stehen, jene beide aber standen am Jordan.

Da nahm Elias seinen Mantel, faltete ihn zusammen und schlug damit in das Wasser, und es zerteilte sich nach beiden Seiten, so dass beide im Trockenen hindurchgingen.

Als sie nun hinübergegangen waren, sprach Elias zu Eliseus: Verlange, was ich dir tun soll, ehe ich von dir genommen werde. Eliseus sprach: Ich bitte, dass mir dein Geist doppelt zu teil werde!

Er antwortete: Du hast etwas Schweres verlangt; indes falls du mich siehest, wenn ich von dir genommen werde, so wird dir zuteil werden, um was du gebeten; wenn du mich aber nicht siehst, so wird es nicht geschehen.

Während sie nun weitergingen und im Gehen redeten, siehe, da erschien ein feuriger Wagen mit feurigen Pferden und trennte beide voneinander; und Elias fuhr im Sturme gen Himmel.

Als Eliseus dies sah, rief er: mein Vater, mein Vater, Wagen Israels und sein Lenker! Und als er ihn nicht mehr sah, fasste er seine Kleider und zerriss sie in zwei Teile.

Alsdann hob er den Mantel des Elias auf, welcher diesem entfallen war, kehrte um, trat an das Ufer des Jordans

und schlug mit dem Mantel des Elias, der diesem entfallen war, in das Wasser, aber es teilte sich nicht. Da sprach er: Wo ist denn jetzt der Gott des Elias? Dann schlug er in das Wasser und es teilte sich hierhin und dorthin und Eliseus ging hindurch.

Als die Söhne der Propheten, welche in Jericho gegenüber waren, dies sahen, sprachen sie: Der Geist des Elias hat sich auf Eliseus niedergelassen. Und sie kamen ihm entgegen und warfen sich vor ihm nieder, mit dem Angesichte zur Erde,

und sprachen zu ihm: Siehe, unter deinen Dienern sind fünfzig rüstige Männer, die hingehen und deinen Herrn suchen können, vielleicht hat ihn der Geist des Herrn entrückt und auf einen der Berge oder in eines der Täler versetzt. Er aber sprach: Sendet nicht aus.

Da drangen sie in ihn, bis er einwilligte, und sprach: So sendet aus! Und sie sandten fünfzig Männer aus. Als diese drei Tage gesucht hatten und ihn nicht fanden,

kehrten sie zu ihm zurück. Er weilte aber noch in Jericho und sprach zu ihnen: Habe ich euch nicht gesagt: Sendet nicht aus!

Elisa vollbringt Wunder

Da sprachen die Männer der Stadt zu Eliseus: Siehe, es lässt sich in dieser Stadt gut wohnen, wie du, Herr, selbst siehst, aber das Wasser ist schlecht und das Land ist unfruchtbar.

Er sprach: Bringet mir ein neues Gefäß und werfet Salz in dasselbe! Als sie dies gebracht hatten,

ging er hinaus zu der Wasserquelle, warf das Salz hinein und sprach: So spricht der Herr: Ich habe dies Wasser geheilt und fortan wird kein Tod noch Unfruchtbarkeit darin sein.

So ward das Wasser geheilt bis auf diesen Tag, nach dem Worte, das Eliseus geredet.

Von dort aber zog er nach Bethel. Als er nun des Weges ging, kamen kleine Knaben aus der Stadt heraus, verspotteten ihn und sprachen: Komm herauf, Kahlkopf! Komm herauf, Kahlkopf!

Da wandte er sich um und sah sie und verfluchte sie im Namen des Herrn. Da kamen zwei Bären aus dem Walde und zerrissen von ihnen zweiundvierzig Knaben.

Er aber ging von dort auf den Berg Karmel und kehrte von da nach Samaria zurück.
