- Kapitel 12 -

Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: and they were among the mighty men, helpers of the war.(a)

They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow, even of Saul’s brethren of Benjamin.

The chief was Ahiezer, then Joash, the sons of Shemaah the Gibeathite; and Jeziel, and Pelet, the sons of Azmaveth; and Berachah, and Jehu the Antothite,(b)

And Ismaiah the Gibeonite, a mighty man among the thirty, and over the thirty; and Jeremiah, and Jahaziel, and Johanan, and Josabad the Gederathite,

Eluzai, and Jerimoth, and Bealiah, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite,

Elkanah, and Jesiah, and Azareel, and Joezer, and Jashobeam, the Korhites,

And Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor.

And of the Gadites there separated themselves unto David into the hold to the wilderness men of might, and men of war fit for the battle, that could handle shield and buckler, whose faces were like the faces of lions, and were as swift as the roes upon the mountains;(c)

Ezer the first, Obadiah the second, Eliab the third,

Mishmannah the fourth, Jeremiah the fifth,

Attai the sixth, Eliel the seventh,

Johanan the eighth, Elzabad the ninth,

Jeremiah the tenth, Machbanai the eleventh.

These were of the sons of Gad, captains of the host: one of the least was over an hundred, and the greatest over a thousand.(e)

These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the east, and toward the west.(f)

And there came of the children of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David.

And David went out to meet them, and answered and said unto them, If ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, the God of our fathers look thereon, and rebuke it.(g)

Then the spirit came upon Amasai, who was chief of the captains, and he said, Thine are we, David, and on thy side, thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. Then David received them, and made them captains of the band.(j)

And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul to the jeopardy of our heads.(k)

As he went to Ziklag, there fell to him of Manasseh, Adnah, and Jozabad, and Jediael, and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains of the thousands that were of Manasseh.

And they helped David against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men of valour, and were captains in the host.(l)

For at that time day by day there came to David to help him, until it was a great host, like the host of God.

David’s Army Grows at Hebron

And these are the numbers of the bands that were ready armed to the war, and came to David to Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul to him, according to the word of the Lord .(m)

The children of Judah that bare shield and spear were six thousand and eight hundred, ready armed to the war.(n)

Of the children of Simeon, mighty men of valour for the war, seven thousand and one hundred.

Of the children of Levi four thousand and six hundred.

And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand and seven hundred;

And Zadok, a young man mighty of valour, and of his father’s house twenty and two captains.

And of the children of Benjamin, the kindred of Saul, three thousand: for hitherto the greatest part of them had kept the ward of the house of Saul.(o)

And of the children of Ephraim twenty thousand and eight hundred, mighty men of valour, famous throughout the house of their fathers.(q)

And of the half tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, which were expressed by name, to come and make David king.

And of the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.

Of Zebulun, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, with all instruments of war, fifty thousand, which could keep rank: they were not of double heart.(r)

And of Naphtali a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty and seven thousand.

And of the Danites expert in war twenty and eight thousand and six hundred.

And of Asher, such as went forth to battle, expert in war, forty thousand.(u)

And on the other side of Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half tribe of Manasseh, with all manner of instruments of war for the battle, an hundred and twenty thousand.

All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king.

And there they were with David three days, eating and drinking: for their brethren had prepared for them.

Moreover they that were nigh them, even unto Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on asses, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, and meat, meal, cakes of figs, and bunches of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep abundantly: for there was joy in Israel.(v)

Das Wachstum von Davids Armee

Diese kamen gleichfalls zu David nach Sikeleg, da er noch vor Saul, dem Sohne Kis, fliehen musste, Helden und auserlesene Streiter,

Bogenschützen, die mit jeder von beiden Händen aus Schleudern Steine warfen und Pfeile schossen. Von den Brüdern Sauls aus Benjamin:

Der Oberste Ahiezer und Joas, die Söhne Samaas von Gabaath, Jaziel und Phallet, die Söhne Azmoths, Baracha und Jehu, der Anathotiter.

Ebenso Samajas, der Gabaoniter, ein Held, der stärkste unter den dreißig und über den dreißig. Jeremias, Jeheziel, Johanan und Jezabad, der Gaderothiter;

Eluzai, Jerimuth, Baalia, Samaria und Saphatia, der Haruphiter.

Elkana, Jesia, Azareel, Joezer, Jesbaam von Karehim,

und Joela und Zabadia, die Söhne Jerohams von Gedor.

Aber auch von den Gadditern gingen zu David über, als er sich in der Wüste verborgen hielt, Helden, sehr gute Krieger, welche Schild und Speer trugen, deren Antlitz wie das Antlitz der Löwen, und die so schnell waren wie die Rehe auf den Bergen:

Ezer war der Oberste, Obdias der zweite, Eliab der dritte,

Masmana der vierte, Jeremias der fünfte,

Ethi der sechste, Eliel der siebente,

Johanan der achte, Elzebad der neunte,

Jeremias der zehnte, Machbanai der elfte.

Diese waren von den Söhnen Gads die Heeresführer; der geringste war über hundert Mann gesetzt, der höchste über tausend.

Diese waren es, welche im ersten Monat über den Jordan setzten, zu der Zeit, wo er über seine Ufer zu treten pflegt; und sie trieben alle, welche in den Tälern gegen Osten und Westen wohnten, in die Flucht.

Es kamen aber auch etliche von Benjamin und von Juda zu der Feste, in der David weilte.

Da ging David hinaus, ihnen entgegen und sprach: Wenn ihr in friedlicher Absicht zu mir gekommen seid, um mir zu helfen, so soll mein Herz sich mit euch vereinigen; wenn ihr mir aber nachstellt, um meinen Feinden zu dienen, obschon doch keine Schuld an meinen Händen ist, so sehe der Gott unserer Väter darein und richte es!

da geriet der Geist über Amasai, das Haupt der dreißig, und er sprach: Dein sind wir, o David, und mit dir, Sohn Isais! Friede, Friede sei dir und Friede denen, die dir helfen! Denn dein Gott hilft dir. Da nahm David sie auf und machte sie zu Hauptleuten.

Auch von Manasse gingen einige Leute zu David über, als er mit den Philistern gegen Saul zum Kampfe zog, ohne doch aber auf ihrer Seite zu kämpfen; denn die Fürsten der Philister hielten eine Beratung und sandten ihn fort, indem sie sprachen: Mit Gefahr für unsere Köpfe wird er zu Saul, seinem Herrn, zurückkehren.

Als er also nach Sikeleg zurückkehrte, gingen von Manasse zu ihm über: Ednas, Jozabad, Jedihel, Michael, Ednas, Jozabad, Eliu und Salathi, Häupter über je tausend in Manasse.

Diese leisteten David Hilfe gegen die Raubscharen; denn alle waren sehr tapfere Männer und sie wurden Anführer im Heere.

Überdies kamen von Tag zu Tag einige zu David, um ihm zu helfen, bis ihre Zahl groß war wie ein Heerlager Gottes.

Davids Heer in Hebron

Und dies ist die Zahl der Heerführer, die zu David, als er in Hebron war, kamen, um das Königtum Sauls auf ihn zu übertragen, dem Worte des Herrn gemäß:

Söhne Judas, die Schild und Speer führten, sechstausend achthundert kriegstüchtige Männer.

Söhne Simeons siebentausend einhundert, sehr tapfere Männer im Kampfe.

Söhne Levis viertausend sechshundert.

Dazu Jojada, der Fürst vom Geschlechte Aarons, und mit ihm dreitausend siebenhundert.

Ferner Sadok, ein Jüngling von herrlichen Gaben, und die Familie seines Vaters, zweiundzwanzig Fürsten.

Dann von den Söhnen Benjamins, den Brüdern Sauls, dreitausend; denn ein großer Teil derselben hing noch dem Hause Saul an.

Ferner von den Söhnen Ephraims zwanzigtausendachthundert namhafte Recken, hochangesehen in ihrem Stamme.

Vom halben Stamme Manasse achtzehntausend; alle kamen, nach ihrem Namen, um David zum Könige zu machen.

Und von den Söhnen Issachars kluge Männer, welche die einzelnen Zeiten wohl kannten, anzugeben, was Israel tun sollte, zweihundert Fürsten; der ganze übrige Stamm folgte ihrem Rate.

Von Zabulon solche, die zum Kampfe auszogen und mit ihren Waffen zur Schlacht geordnet standen, kamen fünfzigtausend zu Hilfe, mit ungeteiltem Herzen.

Und von Nephthali tausend Anführer; und mit ihnen siebenunddreißgtausend, mit Schild und Speer versehen.

Von Dan achtundzwanzigtausendsechshundert, zum Kampfe gerüstet.

Von Aser solche, die zum Kampfe auszogen und zur Schlacht geordnet herausforderten, vierzigtausend.

Von jenseits des Jordans von den Söhnen Rubens und von Gad und von dem halben Stamme Manasse, hundertzwanzigtausend mit Waffen versehene.

Alle diese Krieger, gerüstet zum Kampfe, kamen mit ungeteiltem Herzen nach Hebron, um David zum Könige über ganz Israel zu machen; aber auch alle übrigen aus Israel waren eines Sinnes, dass David König werden sollte.

Und sie blieben daselbst bei David und aßen und tranken drei Tage; denn ihre Brüder hatten für sie zubereitet.

Dazu brachten die, welche in ihrer Nähe wohnten, bis zu Issachar, Zabulon und Nephthali hin, Brot auf Eseln und Kamelen und Maultieren und Rindern zum Essen; Mehl, Feigen, Rosinen, Wein, Öl, Rinder und Widder in großer Menge; denn es war Freude in Israel.
