- Kapitel 26 -

And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon?

Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness.

David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed.

And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.(a)

Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee.

So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.

Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.(b)

And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the Lord’s anointed, and be guiltless?

David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

The Lord forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go.

So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul’s bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the Lord was fallen upon them.

David Reproves Abner

Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top of an hill afar off; a great space being between them:

And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king?

And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord.

This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the Lord’s anointed. And now see where the king’s spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster.(c)

And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the Lord ; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the Lord , saying, Go, serve other gods.(d)

Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the Lord : for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

Saul Acknowledges His Sin

Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

The Lord render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the Lord delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the Lord’s anointed.

And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the Lord , and let him deliver me out of all tribulation.

Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

David verschont Saul ein zweites Mal

Und die Zephiter kamen zu Saul nach Gabaa und sprachen: Siehe, David hält sich auf dem Hügel Hachila verborgen, welcher der Wüste gegenüber liegt.

Da machte sich Saul auf und zog in die Wüste Ziph und mit ihm dreitausend Mann, Auserlesene Israels, um auf David in der Wüste Ziph zu fahnden.

Und Saul lagerte sich in Gabaa Hachila, welches der Wüste gegenüber am Wege lag; David aber hielt sich in der Wüste auf. Als er nun sah, dass Saul ihm in die Wüste nachgekommen sei,

sandte er Kundschafter aus und erfuhr, dass er wirklich dahingekommen sei.

Da machte David sich heimlich auf und kam an den Ort, wo Saul war; und als er den Platz sah, an dem Saul schlief und Abner, der Sohn Ners, der Führer seines Heeres, und den Saul in dem Zelte schlafend und das übrige Volk rings um ihn her,

wandte sich David zu Abimelech, dem Hethiter, und zu Abisai, dem Sohne Sarvias, dem Bruder Joabs, und sprach: Wer will mit mir zu Saul in das Lager hinabsteigen? Abisai antwortete: Ich will mit dir hinabsteigen.

Als nun David und Abisai des Nachts zu dem Volke kamen, fanden sie Saul im Zelte liegend und schlafend und seinen Speer zu seinen Häupten in die Erde gesteckt; Abner aber und das Volk rings um ihn her schlafend.

Da sprach Abisai zu David: Heute hat Gott deinen Feind in deine Hand geliefert; so will ich ihn denn mit der Lanze mit einem Stoße in die Erde bohren, dass es eines zweiten nimmer bedarf.

David sprach zu Abisai: Töte ihn nicht, denn wer könnte seine Hand gegen den Gesalbten des Herrn ausstrecken und ohne Schuld bleiben?

Dann sprach David: So wahr der Herr lebt, wenn der Herr ihn nicht schlägt oder seine Zeit kommt, dass er stirbt, oder dass er in den Krieg zieht und umkommt,

so sei der Herr mir gnädig, dass ich meine Hand nicht gegen den Gesalbten des Herrn ausstrecke! So nimm also den Speer, der zu seinen Häupten ist, und den Wasserbecher und lass uns gehen!

David nahm also den Speer und den Wasserbecher, welcher zu den Häupten Sauls war; und sie gingen fort, ohne dass jemand es sah oder bemerkte oder erwachte, sondern alle schliefen, weil ein tiefer Schlaf vom Herrn auf sie gefallen war.

Als nun David auf die entgegengesetzte Seite hinübergekommen war und in der Ferne auf der Spitze des Berges stand und ein großer Raum zwischen ihnen war,

rief David dem Volke und Abner, dem Sohne Ners, zu und sprach: Du wirst doch antworten, Abner? Abner antwortete und sprach: Wer bist du, dass du schreist und den König beunruhigst?

David sprach zu Abner: Bist du nicht ein Mann? und wer ist dir in Israel sonst gleich? Warum hast du also bei deinem Herrn, dem Könige, nicht Wache gehalten? Denn einer von dem Volke ist hingegangen, um den König, deinen Herrn, zu ermorden.

Das ist nicht gut, was du getan; so wahr der Herr lebt, ihr seid Kinder des Todes, dass ihr über euern Gebieter, den Gesalbten des Herrn, nicht gewacht habt! Nun siehe doch zu, wo der Speer des Königs und wo der Wasserbecher ist, der sich zu seinen Häupten befand.

Da erkannte Saul die Stimme Davids und sprach: Ist das deine Stimme, mein Sohn David? David sprach: Es ist meine Stimme, mein Herr und König!

Und er sprach: Warum verfolgt mein Herr seinen Diener? Was habe ich getan? Oder was ist Böses in meiner Hand?

So höre nun, mein Herr und König, ich bitte, auf die Worte deines Dieners; Wenn der Herr dich wider mich reizt, so steige der Geruch eines Opfers empor; wenn aber Menschen, so sind sie verflucht vor dem Herrn, dass sie mich heute hinausgetrieben haben, dass ich nicht in dem Erbe des Herrn wohne, und dass sie sprechen: Gehe hin, diene fremden Göttern!

Möge nun mein Blut nicht vor dem Herrn zur Erde vergossen werden! Denn der König von Israel ist ausgezogen, einen einzigen Floh zu suchen, wie man einem Rebhuhn auf den Bergen nachjagt.

Da sprach Saul: Ich habe gesündigt, kehre zurück, mein Sohn David! Denn ich werde dir fortan nichts mehr zuleide tun, darum dass heute mein Leben in deinen Augen kostbar gewesen ist; denn es zeigt sich, dass ich töricht gehandelt habe und gar vieles nicht wusste.

David antwortete und sprach: Siehe, hier ist der Speer des Königs; einer von den Dienern des Königs möge herüberkommen und ihn holen.

Der Herr aber wird einem jeden nach seiner Gerechtigkeit und Treue vergelten; denn der Herr hat dich heute in meine Hand gegeben, ich aber wollte meine Hand nicht gegen den Gesalbten des Herrn ausstrecken.

Und so wie dein Leben heute hochgeachtet gewesen ist in meinen Augen, so möge mein Leben in den Augen des Herrn hochgeachtet sein und er möge mich aus aller Bedrängnis befreien.

Da sprach Saul zu David: Gesegnet seist du, mein Sohn David; du wirst es sicher ausführen und gewiss wirst du es vermögen! David aber ging seines Weges und Saul kehrte an seinen Ort zurück.
