- Kapitel 34 -

(2 Kings 22:1–2)

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord , and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.

Josiah Destroys Idolatry

(1 Kings 13:1–10; 2 Kings 23:4–20)

For in the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet young, he began to seek after the God of David his father: and in the twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places, and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images.

And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the molten images, he brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.(a)

And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars, and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem.

And so did he in the cities of Manasseh, and Ephraim, and Simeon, even unto Naphtali, with their mattocks round about.(c)

And when he had broken down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the graven images into powder, and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.(d)

Josiah Repairs the Temple

(2 Kings 22:3–7)

Now in the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land, and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, and Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of the Lord his God.

And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.

And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the Lord , and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the Lord , to repair and amend the house:

Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.(e)

And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.

Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were scribes, and officers, and porters.

Hilkiah Finds the Book of the Law

(2 Kings 22:8–13)

And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the Lord , Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the Lord given by Moses.(f)

And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the Lord . And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.(g)

And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the Lord , and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.(h)

Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.(i)

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.

And the king commanded Hilkiah, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Abdon the son of Micah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king’s, saying,(j)

Go, enquire of the Lord for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the Lord that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord , to do after all that is written in this book.

Huldah’s Prophecy

(2 Kings 22:14–20)

And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.(k)

And she answered them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,

Thus saith the Lord , Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be quenched.

And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to enquire of the Lord , so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;

Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the Lord .

Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.

Josiah Renews the Covenant

(2 Kings 23:1–3)

Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.

And the king went up into the house of the Lord , and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the Lord .(n)

And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the Lord , to walk after the Lord , and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.

And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.(o)

And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the Lord their God. And all his days they departed not from following the Lord , the God of their fathers.(p)

Josia regiert in Juda

(2. Könige 22,1-2)

Acht Jahre war Josias alt, als er König ward, und einunddreißig Jahre herrschte er in Jerusalem.

Er tat, was vor dem Angesichte des Herrn recht war, und wandelte auf den Wegen seines Vaters David und wich nicht ab, weder zur Rechten, noch zur Linken.

(1. Könige 13,1-10; 2. Könige 23,4-20)

Im achten Jahre seiner Herrschaft aber, da er noch sehr jung war, fing er an, den Gott seines Vaters David zu suchen, und im zwölften Jahre, nachdem er König geworden war, reinigte er Juda und Jerusalem von den Höhen und den Hainen und den Götzenbildern und geschnitzten Bildern.

Und sie zerstörten vor seinen Augen die Altäre der Baale und zerbrachen die Bildsäulen, welche auf denselben standen; auch hieb er die Haine um und zerbrach die geschnitzten Bilder und zerstreute die Trümmer über die Gräber derjenigen, die ihnen zu opfern pflegten.

Überdies verbrannte er die Gebeine der Priester auf den Altären der Götzen und reinigte so Juda und Jerusalem.

Aber auch in den Städten Manasses, Ephraims und Simeons, bis nach Nephthali hin, zerstörte er alles.

Und nachdem er die Altäre niedergerissen, die Haine vernichtet und die geschnitzten Bilder in Stücke zerschlagen und alle Götzenhäuser im ganzen Lande Israel zerstört hatte, kehrte er nach Jerusalem zurück.

Hilkija findet das Buch des Gesetzes

(2. Könige 22,3-7)

Im achtzehnten Jahre seiner Herrschaft aber, als das Land und der Tempel des Herrn schon gereinigt war, sandte er Saphan, den Sohn Eselias, Maasias, den Obersten der Stadt, und Joha, den Sohn des Joachaz; den Kanzler, um das Haus des Herrn, seines Gottes, wiederherzustellen.

Diese kamen zu dem Hohenpriester Helkias und empfingen von ihm das Geld, welches in das Haus des Herrn gebracht worden war und das die Leviten und die Türhüter von Manasse und Ephraim und allen, die in Israel übriggeblieben waren und von ganz Juda und Benjamin und den Bewohnern von Jerusalem gesammelt hatten,

und sie übergaben es den Vorstehern der Arbeiter im Hause des Herrn, dass sie den Tempel wiederherstellten und alles Schadhafte wieder ausbesserten.

Diese aber gaben es den Werkmeistern und Steinmetzen, dass sie aus den Steinbrüchen Steine kauften und Holz für die Bindebalken des Gebäudes und zum Gebälke für die Häuser, welche die Könige von Juda zerstört hatten.

Und sie taten alles getreulich. Über die Arbeiter aber waren Jahath und Abdias von den Söhnen Meraris, Zacharias und Mosollam von den Söhnen Kaaths gesetzt und trieben zur Arbeit an; sie waren alle Leviten, welche auf Instrumenten zu spielen verstanden.

Über die aber, welche zu verschiedenen Bedarfe Lasten tragen, waren die Schreiber und Aufseher und Türhüter aus den Leviten gesetzt.

(2. Könige 22,8-13)

Als sie nun das Geld, welches man in den Tempel des Herrn gebracht hatte, herausnahmen, fand Helkias, der Priester, das Gesetzbuch des Herrn, das durch Moses gegeben war.

Da sprach er zu Saphan, dem Schreiber: Ich habe das Gesetzbuch im Hause des Herrn gefunden, und gab es ihm.

Dieser aber brachte das Buch zu dem Könige und berichtete ihm also: Alles, was du deinen Dienern aufgetragen hast, siehe, wird vollbracht.

Sie haben das Geld, das man im Hause des Herrn gefunden, zusammengetan und es ist den Vorstehern über die Arbeiter und die verschiedenen Werkleute übergeben worden.

Dazu hat mir Helkias, der Priester, dieses Buch gegeben. Als er nun vor dem Könige daraus las

und dieser die Worte des Gesetzes hörte, zerriss er seine Kleider

und er gebot Helkias und Ahikam, dem Sohne Saphans, und Abdon, dem Sohne Michas, und Saphan, dem Schreiber, und Asaa, dem Diener des Königs, also:

Gehet hin und bittet den Herrn für mich und für die, welche in Israel und Juda übrig sind, wegen aller Worte dieses Buches, das aufgefunden worden ist; denn groß ist der Grimm des Herrn, der sich über uns ergossen hat, weil unsere Väter die Worte des Herrn nicht bewahrt haben, dass sie alles taten, was in diesem Buche geschrieben steht.

(2. Könige 22,14-20)

Da ging Helkias und die, welche zugleich vom Könige gesandt waren, zu der Prophetin Olda, dem Weibe Sellums, des Sohnes Thekuaths, des Sohnes Hasras, des Kleiderhüters, die in Jerusalem im andern Teile wohnte, und redeten zu ihr die Worte, welche wir oben erzählt haben.

Diese aber antworteten ihnen: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Saget dem Manne, der euch zu mir gesendet hat:

So spricht der Herr: Siehe, ich werde über diesen Ort und über diese Bewohner das Unglück und alle Flüche kommen lassen, die in dem Buche, welches man vor dem Könige von Juda gelesen hat, geschrieben stehen;

dafür, dass sie mich verlassen und fremden Göttern geopfert haben, so dass sie mich zum Zorne reizten durch alle Werke ihrer Hände, deswegen soll mein Grimm sich über diesen Ort ergießen und nicht erlöschen.

Zu dem Könige von Juda aber, der euch gesandt hat, den Herrn zu bitten, sprechet also: So spricht der Herr, der Gott Israels: Weil du auf die Worte des Buches gehört hast

und dein Herz sich erweicht hat und du dich vor dem Herrn gedemütigt hast, um der Dinge willen, welche gegen diesen Ort und die Bewohner von Jerusalem verkündet wurden, und weil du aus Ehrfurcht vor meinem Angesichte deine Kleider zerrissest und vor mir weintest, so habe auch ich dich erhört, spricht der Herr.

Denn ich werde dich bald zu deinen Vätern abrufen und du sollst in Frieden in dein Grab gebracht werden und deine Augen sollen all das Unglück nicht sehen müssen, welches ich über diesen Ort und über seine Bewohner kommen lassen will. Sie berichteten also dem König alles, was jene gesagt hatte.

Josia stellt die wahre Anbetung wieder her

(2. Könige 23,1-3)

Dieser aber rief alle Ältesten von Juda und Jerusalem zusammen

und ging in das Haus des Herrn hinauf, zugleich mit allen Männern von Juda und den Bewohnern von Jerusalem, den Priestern und den Leviten und dem ganzen Volke, vom Geringsten bis zum Größten. Und der König las im Hause des Herrn, vor den Ohren aller, alle Worte des Buches,

und er schloss, auf seinem Wege stehend, den Bund vor dem Herrn, dass er ihm nachwandeln und seine Gebote und Zeugnisse und Rechte von ganzem Herzen und aus ganzer Seele beobachten und tun wollte, was in diesem Buche, das er gelesen hatte, geschrieben war.

Auch nahm er darüber von allen, die sich in Jerusalem und in Benjamin fanden, einen Eidschwur, und die Bewohner Jerusalems taten dem Bunde des Herrn, des Gottes ihrer Väter, gemäß.

So schaffte Josias alle Greuel aus allen Gauen der Söhne Israels hinweg und machte, dass alle, die in Israel übrig waren, dem Herrn, ihrem Gott, dienten. So lange er lebte, fielen sie nicht von dem Herrn, dem Gotte ihrer Väter, ab.
