- Kapitel 35 -

(2 Kings 23:21–27)

Moreover Josiah kept a passover unto the Lord in Jerusalem: and they killed the passover on the fourteenth day of the first month.

And he set the priests in their charges, and encouraged them to the service of the house of the Lord ,

And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the Lord , Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the Lord your God, and his people Israel,

And prepare yourselves by the houses of your fathers, after your courses, according to the writing of David king of Israel, and according to the writing of Solomon his son.

And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of the families of the fathers of your brethren the people, and after the division of the families of the Levites.(a)

So kill the passover, and sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren, that they may do according to the word of the Lord by the hand of Moses.

And Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the passover offerings, for all that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.(c)

And his princes gave willingly unto the people, to the priests, and to the Levites: Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel, rulers of the house of God, gave unto the priests for the passover offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattle, and three hundred oxen.(d)

Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.(e)

So the service was prepared, and the priests stood in their place, and the Levites in their courses, according to the king’s commandment.

And they killed the passover, and the priests sprinkled the blood from their hands, and the Levites flayed them.

And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the Lord , as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.

And they roasted the passover with fire according to the ordinance: but the other holy offerings sod they in pots, and in caldrons, and in pans, and divided them speedily among all the people.(f)

And afterward they made ready for themselves, and for the priests: because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night; therefore the Levites prepared for themselves, and for the priests the sons of Aaron.

And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their place, according to the commandment of David, and Asaph, and Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the porters waited at every gate; they might not depart from their service; for their brethren the Levites prepared for them.(g)

So all the service of the Lord was prepared the same day, to keep the passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the Lord , according to the commandment of king Josiah.

And the children of Israel that were present kept the passover at that time, and the feast of unleavened bread seven days.(h)

And there was no passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a passover as Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.(i)

In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this passover kept.

The Death of Josiah

(2 Kings 23:28–30)

After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates: and Josiah went out against him.(j)

But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make haste: forbear thee from meddling with God, who is with me, that he destroy thee not.(k)

Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him, but disguised himself, that he might fight with him, and hearkened not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo.

And the archers shot at king Josiah; and the king said to his servants, Have me away; for I am sore wounded.(l)

His servants therefore took him out of that chariot, and put him in the second chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.(m)

Laments over Josiah

And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.

Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and his goodness, according to that which was written in the law of the Lord ,(n)

And his deeds, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah.

Josia hält das Passahfest

(2. Könige 23,21-27)

Josias aber hielt in Jerusalem dem Herrn das Phase und es ward am vierzehnten Tage des ersten Monats geschlachtet.

Auch bestellte er die Priester für ihre Obliegenheiten und ermunterte sie, den Dienst im Hause des Herrn zu verrichten.

Und zu den Leviten, nach deren Unterweisung ganz Israel sich dem Herrn geheiligt hatte, sprach er: Stellet die Lade in das Heiligtum des Tempels, welchen Salomon, der Sohn Davids, der König von Israel, erbaut hat, denn fortan sollt ihr sie nicht mehr tragen; jetzt aber dienet dem Herrn, eurem Gott, und seinem Volke Israel.

Rüstet euch nach euern Stammhäusern und Geschlechtern, nach den einzelnen Abteilungen, wie David, der König von Israel, geboten und sein Sohn Salomon das Verzeichnis aufgestellt hat.

Und tuet Dienst im Heiligtum nach den Familien und Abteilungen der Leviten,

und heiliget euch und opfert das Phase; auch bereitet es für eure Brüder, dass sie nach den Worten, welche der Herr durch Moses gesprochen, tun können.

Zudem gab Josias allem Volke, das sich daselbst zur Feier des Phase einfand, Lämmer und Böcklein aus der Herde und von sonstigem Kleinvieh dreißigtausend und dreitausend Rinder; dies alles war aus dem Besitz des Königs.

Auch seine Fürsten gaben sowohl dem Volke, wie den Priestern und Leviten, was sie freiwillig gelobt hatten. Helkias ferner und Zacharias und Jahiel, die Fürsten im Hause des Herrn, gaben den Priestern, damit diese das Phase halten konnten, zweitausendsechshundert verschiedene Stücke Kleinvieh und dreihundert Rinder.

Chonenias aber und Semejas und Nathanael, seine Brüder, wie auch Hasabias, Jehiel und Jozabad, die Obersten der Leviten, gaben den übrigen Leviten zur Feier des Phase fünftausend Stück Kleinvieh und fünfhundert Rinder.

Und der Dienst ward eingerichtet und die Priester standen an ihrer Stelle und die Leviten nach ihren Abteilungen, dem Befehle des Könige gemäß.

Alsdann ward das Phase geopfert, die Priester sprengten mit ihrer Hand das Blut, während die Leviten den Brandopfern die Haut abzogen;

und sie schieden die Brandopfer aus, um sie nach den Stammhäusern und Geschlechtern zu verteilen und dem Herrn darzubringen, wie im Buche Moses geschrieben steht; ebenso taten sie mit den Rindern.

Und sie brieten das Phase am Feuer, wie es im Gesetze vorgeschrieben ist; die Friedopfer aber kochten sie in Pfannen und Kesseln und Töpfen und verteilten sie eilends unter das ganze Volk.

Darnach bereiteten sie für sich und für die Priester, denn die Priester waren mit der Darbringung der Brandopfer und der Fettstücke bis in die Nacht hinein beschäftigt, deshalb bereiteten die Leviten für sich und die Priester, die Söhne Aarons, zuletzt.

Auch die Sänger, die Söhne Asaphs, standen in ihrer Ordnung nach dem Gebote Davids und Asaphs und Hemans und Idithuns, der Propheten des Königs; und die Türhüter hielten Hut an allen Toren, so dass sie nicht einen Augenblick von ihrem Dienste abließen, weswegen ihnen auch ihre Brüder, die Leviten, Speise bereiteten.

So ward der ganze Dienst des Herrn an jenem Tage nach der Vorschrift verrichtet, um das Phase zu halten und die Brandopfer auf dem Altare des Herrn darzubringen, dem Befehle des Josias gemäß.

Auch die Söhne Israels, welche sich daselbst befanden, hielten das Phase in dieser Zeit und das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote sieben Tage lang.

Ein solches Phase, wie dieses, war in Israel seit den Tagen Samuels, des Propheten, nicht gehalten worden und keiner von allen Königen Israels hatte es gefeiert, wie Josias es den Priestern und den Leviten und ganz Juda und Israel, das sich dort befand, und den Bewohnern von Jerusalem veranstaltete.

Im achtzehnten Jahre der Herrschaft Josias ward diese Phase gefeiert.

Josia stirbt in der Schlacht

(2. Könige 23,28-30)

Nachdem Josias den Tempel wiederhergestellt hatte, zog Nechao, der König von Ägypten, herauf, um gegen Charkamis am Euphrat zu kämpfen, und Josias zog ihm entgegen.

Jener aber sandte Boten an ihn und ließ ihm sagen: Was habe ich mit dir zu schaffen, König von Juda? Nicht gegen dich komme ich heute, sondern ich kämpfe gegen ein anderes Haus, gegen das mir Gott befohlen, eilig zu ziehen. Lass ab, gegen Gott zu handeln, der mit mir ist, damit er dich nicht töte.

Josias aber wollte nicht zurückkehren, sondern schickte sich zum Kampfe mit ihm an und hörte nicht auf die Worte Nechaos aus dem Munde Gottes, sondern rückte aus, um im Felde von Mageddo den Kampf zu bestehen.

Dort ward er von den Schützen verwundet und sprach zu seinen Dienern: Führet mich aus dem Kampfe, denn ich bin schwer verwundet.

Da trugen sie ihn von seinem Wagen auf den zweiten Wagen, der ihm nach Königsbrauch gefolgt war, und brachten ihn nach Jerusalem; dort starb er und ward in der Grabstätte seiner Väter begraben und ganz Juda und Jerusalem betrauerten ihn,

am meisten Jeremias, dessen Klagelieder über Josias alle Sänger und Sängerinnen bis auf den gegenwärtigen Tag wiederholen, so dass es wie ein Gesetz in Israel ward: Siehe, es steht in den Klageliedern geschrieben.

Was aber sonst von Josias zu sagen ist und von seinen Werken der Barmherzigkeit, wie solche im Gesetze des Herrn befohlen sind,

und was er getan, das ist vom Anfang bis zum Ende im Buche der Könige von Juda und Israel beschrieben.
