- Kapitel 18 -

(2 Chronicles 29:1–2)

Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.(a)

Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.(b)

And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord , according to all that David his father did.

He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.(c)

He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

For he clave to the Lord , and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses.(e)

And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.(f)

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.

And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:

Because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the Lord commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

Sennacherib Invades Judah

(2 Chronicles 32:1–8; Psalm 46:1–11)

Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.(g)

And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the Lord , and in the treasures of the king’s house.

At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the Lord , and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.(h)

Sennacherib Threatens Jerusalem

(2 Chronicles 32:9–19; Isaiah 36:1–22)

And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab–shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller’s field.(i)

And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.(j)

And Rab–shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?(k)

Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.(n)

But if ye say unto me, We trust in the Lord our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.(o)

How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Am I now come up without the Lord against this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab–shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews’ language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

But Rab–shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?(p)

Then Rab–shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord , saying, The Lord will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:(q)

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The Lord will deliver us.(s)

Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?

But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab–shakeh.

Hiskia regiert in Juda

(2. Chronik 29,1-2)

Im dritten Jahre Osees, des Sohnes Elas, des Königs von Israel, ward Ezechias König, der Sohn Achaz, des Königs von Juda.

Fünfundzwanzig Jahre war er alt, als er zu herrschen begann, und er herrschte neunundzwanzig Jahre in Jerusalem; der Name seiner Mutter war Abi, eine Tochter des Zacharias.

Er tat, was vor dem Herrn gut war, ganz wie sein Vater David getan hatte.

Er verwüstete die Höhen, zerbrach die Bildsäulen, hieb die Haine um und zertrümmerte die eherne Schlange, welche Moses gemacht hatte, denn bis zu jener Zeit zündeten die Söhne Israels vor ihr Räucherwerk an, und er nannte sie Nohestan.

Er vertraute auf den Herrn, den Gott Israels, darum ist nach ihm nicht seinesgleichen gewesen unter allen Königen von Juda und nicht unter denen, die vor ihm gewesen sind.

Er blieb dem Herrn treu und wich nicht von seiner Nachfolge und hielt seine Gebote, die der Herr Moses gegeben hatte.

Deswegen war auch der Herr mit ihm und er handelte weise in allem, was er vornahm. Auch erhob er sich gegen den König von Assyrien und blieb ihm nicht dienstbar.

Er schlug die Philister bis nach Gaza und ihr gesamtes Gebiet, von den Wächtertürmen an bis zu den befestigten Städten.

Im vierten Jahre des Königs Ezechias, welches das siebente Jahr Osees, des Sohnes Elas, des Königs von Israel, war, zog Salmanasar, der König von Assyrien, gegen Samaria herauf und griff es an

und nahm es ein; denn nach drei Jahren, im sechsten Jahre des Ezechias, das ist im neunten Jahre Osees, des Königs von Israel, wurde Samaria eingenommen.

Und der König von Assyrien führte Israel weg nach Assyrien und versetzte sie an den Hala und Habor, Flüsse von Gozan, in die Städte der Meder;

weil sie auf die Stimme des Herrn, ihres Gottes, nicht hörten, sondern seinen Bund übertraten; auf nichts von dem, was Moses, der Diener des Herrn, geboten hatte, hörten sie oder taten es.

(2. Chronik 32,1-8; Psalm 46,1-11)

Im vierzehnten Jahre des Königs Ezechias zog Sennacherib, der König von Assyrien, gegen alle festen Städte Judas heran und nahm sie ein.

Da sandte Ezechias, der König von Juda, Boten zu dem Könige von Assyrien und Lachis und ließ ihm sagen: Ich habe gefehlt, ziehe wieder von mir ab, und ich will alles, was du mir auferlegst, auf mich nehmen. Da legte der König der Assyrier Ezechias, dem Könige von Juda, dreihundert Talente Silbers und dreißig Talente Goldes auf.

Und Ezechias gab alles Silber her, das sich in dem Hause des Herrn und in den Schätzen des Königs fand.

In jener Zeit zerschlug Ezechias die Türen am Tempel des Herrn und die Goldbleche, welche er hatte anschlagen lassen, und gab diese dem Könige von Assyrien.

Sennacherib rühmt sich gegen den HERRN

(2. Chronik 32,9-19; Jesaja 36,1-22)

Der König von Assyrien aber sandte von Lachis Tharthan, Rabsaris und Rabsakes gegen den König Ezechias, mit einer starken Mannschaft nach Jerusalem; diese zogen hinauf und stellten sich, als sie nach Jerusalem kamen, bei der Wasserleitung des obern Teiches auf, welcher an der Straße des Walkerfeldes liegt.

Alsdann riefen sie den König. Da ging Eliakim, der Sohn des Helkias, der Vorsteher des Hauses, und Sobna, der Schreiber, und Joahe, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler, zu ihnen hinaus.

Und Rabsakes sprach zu ihnen: Saget dem Ezechias: So spricht der große König, der König von Assyrien: Was ist dies für eine Zuversicht, auf welche du dich stützest?

Geht etwa deine Absicht dahin, dich zum Kampfe zu rüsten? auf wen vertrauest du, dass du es wagst, dich zu empören?

Hoffest du auf den zerknickten Rohrstab, auf Ägypten, der, wenn jemand sich darauf lehnt, in Stücke zerbricht und ihm in die Hand fährt und sie durchbohrt? So ist Pharao, der König von Ägypten, für alle, die auf ihn Vertrauen setzen.

Wenn ihr mir aber sagen solltet: Auf den Herrn, unsern Gott, setzen wir unser Vertrauen; ist das nicht derselbe, dessen Höhen und Altäre Ezechias abgeschafft hat, da er Juda und Jerusalem befahl: Vor diesem Altare sollt ihr in Jerusalem anbeten?

Gehet also zu meinem Herrn, dem Könige von Assyrien, über, so will ich euch zweitausend Rosse geben, und sehet dann zu, ob ihr die Reiter dazu aufbringen könnt!

Wie könnt ihr auch nur einem Statthalter unter den geringsten Dienern meines Herrn widerstehen? Oder setzest du Vertrauen auf Ägypten wegen seiner Wagen und Reiter?

Bin ich denn ohne des Herrn Willen herangezogen gegen diesen Ort, ihn zu zerstören? Der Herr hat zu mir gesprochen: Ziehe hinauf gegen dies Land und verheere es!

Da sprachen Eliakim, der Sohn des Helkias, und Sobna und Joahe zu Rabsakes: Wir bitten dich, rede mit uns, deinen Dienern, syrisch, denn wir verstehen diese Sprache; aber rede nicht jüdisch mit uns, da das Volk es hört, welches auf der Mauer ist.

Rabsakes aber antwortete ihnen und sprach: Hat mich denn mein Herr an deinen Herrn und an dich gesandt, um diese Worte zu reden, und nicht vielmehr an die Männer, welche auf der Mauer sitzen, dass sie mit euch ihren eigenen Kot essen und ihren Harn trinken müssen?

Rabsakes also trat hin und rief mit lauter Stimme in jüdischer Sprache: Höret die Worte des großen Königs, des Königs von Assyrien!

Also spricht der König: Lasset euch von Ezechias nicht verführen; denn er wird nicht imstande sein, euch aus meiner Hand zu retten.

Und lasset euch nicht von ihm auf den Herrn vertrösten, wenn er sagt: Der Herr wird uns sicherlich befreien und diese Stadt wird nicht in die Hand des Königs von Assyrien gegeben werden.

Höret nicht auf Ezechias! Denn so spricht der König von Assyrien: verhandelt mit mir, was euch nützlich ist, und kommet heraus zu mir, so sollt ihr ein jeder von seinem Weinberge und von seinem Feigenbaum essen und sollt Wasser aus euern Brunnen trinken,

bis ich komme und euch in ein Land hinüberführe, das euerm Lande gleich ist, in ein fruchtbares Land, wo Wein ergiebig wächst, in ein Land, das Brot und Weinberge hat, in ein Land, das Ölbäume und Öl und Honig hat, und ihr werdet am Leben bleiben und nicht sterben! Höret nicht auf Ezechias, der euch täuscht, wenn er spricht: Der Herr wird uns befreien!

Haben denn die Götter der Völker ihr Land aus der Hand des Königs von Assyrien befreit?

Wo ist der Gott von Emath und Arphad? Wo ist der Gott von Sepharvaim, Ana und Ava? Haben sie etwa Samaria aus meiner Hand gerettet?

Welche sind denn unter allen Göttern der Länder diejenigen, welche ihr Gebiet aus meiner Hand errettet haben, dass der Herr Jerusalem aus meiner Hand sollte retten können?

Das Volk schwieg hierzu still und antwortete ihm nichts, denn sie hatten den Befehl vom König empfangen, ihm nicht zu antworten.

Und Eliakim, der Sohn des Helkias, der Vorsteher des Hauses, Sobna, der Schreiber, und Joahe, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler, kamen mit zerrissenen Kleidern zu Ezechias und berichteten ihm die Worte Rabsakes.
