- Kapitel 4 -

Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord : and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.(a)

And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.(b)

The Shunammite Woman

(Matthew 10:40–42)

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.(c)

And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually.

Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

And he said unto him, Say now unto her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among mine own people.

And he said, What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thine handmaid.(e)

And the woman conceived, and bare a son at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the time of life.

Elisha Raises the Shunammite’s Son

(Acts 20:7–12)

And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.

And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.

And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, and went out.

And she called unto her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him to day? it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, It shall be well.(f)

Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding for me, except I bid thee.(g)

So she went and came unto the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, yonder is that Shunammite:

Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me.(h)

Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me?

Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.(j)

And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.

He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord .

And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.

Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.(k)

And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto him, he said, Take up thy son.

Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

Elisha Purifies the Poisonous Stew

And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.

And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.

So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.(l)

Feeding a Hundred Men

(Matthew 15:29–39; Mark 8:1–10)

And there came a man from Baal–shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.(m)

And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord , They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the Lord .

Elisa und das Öl der Witwe

Eine aber von den Frauen der Propheten rief Eliseus an und sprach: Dein Diener, mein Mann, ist gestorben und du weißt, dass dein Diener den Herrn fürchtete; siehe, jetzt kommt der Gläubiger, um meine zwei Söhne zu nehmen, dass sie ihm dienstbar werden.

Da sprach Eliseus zu ihr: Was willst du, dass ich dir tue? Sage mir, was hast du in deinem Hause? Sie antwortete: Ich, deine Magd, habe nichts in meinem Hause, außer ein wenig Öl, mich damit zu salben.

Da befahl er ihr: Gehe hin und borge dir von allen deinen Nachbarn leere Gefäße, nicht wenige.

Alsdann geh in dein Haus und verschließe deine Tür, wenn du mit deinen Söhnen darinnen bist, und gieße aus jenem in alle diese Gefäße ein, und wenn sie voll sind, nimm sie weg!

Da ging das Weib hin und schloss die Tür hinter sich und ihren Söhnen und diese reichten die Gefäße, sie aber goss in dieselben ein.

Als nun die Gefäße voll waren, sprach sie zu ihrem Sohne: Bringe mir noch ein Gefäß her! Dieser aber antwortete: Ich habe ´keines mehr! Und das Öl stand still.

Da ging sie hin und zeigte es dem Manne Gottes an, er aber sprach: Gehe hin, verkaufe das Öl und bezahle deinen Gläubiger; du aber und deine Söhne lebet von dem übrigen.

Elisa erweckt den Sohn der Schunamiterin

(Matthäus 10,40-42)

Es geschah nun eines Tages, dass Eliseus durch Sunam zog; daselbst wohnte eine angesehene Frau, welche ihn anhielt, dass er Speise zu sich nehme, und so oft er dort vorüberzog, kehrte er bei ihr ein, um Speise zu sich zu nehmen.

Diese sprach zu ihrem Mann: Ich merke, dass dieser Mann, welcher so oft bei uns durchzieht, ein heiliger Mann Gottes ist.

Darum lass uns ihm ein kleines Gemach einrichten, ein Bett, einen Tisch und Stuhl und Leuchter hineinsetzen, dass er dort bleibe, wenn er zu uns kommt.

So begab es sich eines Tages, dass er dorthin kam und in das Gemach einkehrte und daselbst ruhte.

Da sprach er zu seinem Diener Giezi: Rufe die Sunamitin dort! Als dieser sie gerufen und sie vor ihn trat,

sprach er zu seinem Diener: Sage zu ihr: Siehe, du hast uns in allem eifrig bedient, was willst du, dass ich dir tun soll? Hast du etwa ein Anliegen und willst du, dass ich mit dem Könige oder mit dem Heerführer rede? Sie antwortete: Ich wohne inmitten meines Volkes.

Er sprach: Was will sie also, dass ich ihr tue? Giezi antwortete: Frage nicht! Sie hat ja keinen Sohn und ihr Mann ist alt.

Da befahl er ihm, sie zu rufen. Als dieser sie gerufen hatte und sie vor dem Eingange stand,

sprach er zu ihr: Um diese Zeit und zu eben dieser Stunde, da du lebst, wirst du einen Sohn in deinem Leibe haben. Sie aber antwortete: Ich bitte, mein Herr, Mann Gottes, sage doch deiner Magd nichts Unwahres!

Und die Frau empfing und gebar einen Sohn, um die Zeit und um die Stunde, die Eliseus bezeichnet hatte.

(Apostelgeschichte 20,7-12)

Und der Knabe ward groß. Da geschah es eines Tages, dass er zu seinem Vater, zu den Schnittern herausging;

dort sprach er zu seinem Vater: Mein Kopf tut mir weh, mein Kopf tut mir weh! Dieser befahl seinem Knechte: Nimm ihn und bringe ihn zu seiner Mutter!

Da nahm er ihn und brachte ihn zu seiner Mutter; diese legte ihn auf ihre Kniee bis zum Mittag, als dann starb er.

Da ging sie hinauf, legte ihn auf das Bett des Mannes Gottes, schloss die Tür, und als sie außen war,

rief sie ihren Mann und sprach: Ich bitte, sende einen von den Knechten mit mir und gib mir eine Eselin, dass ich zu dem Manne Gottes eile und wiederkomme.

Dieser aber sprach: Warum gehst du zu ihm? Es ist heute nicht Neumond noch Sabbat. Sie antwortete: Ich will gehen!

Als sie nun die Eselin gesattelt hatte, befahl sie dem Knechte: Treibe und eile und mache mir keinen Aufenthalt auf dem Wege und tue das, was ich dir befehle!

So zog sie denn hin und kam zu dem Manne Gottes auf den Berg Karmel. Als der Mann Gottes sie von ferne sah, sprach er zu Giezi, seinem Diener: Siehe, da kommt die Sunamitin!

Gehe ihr doch entgegen und sprich zu ihr: Geht es dir wohl und deinem Mann und deinem Sohn? Sie antwortete: Ja.

Als sie aber zu dem Manne Gottes auf den Berg kam, umfasste sie seine Füße; doch Giezi trat hinzu, um sie zu entfernen. Der Mann Gottes indes sprach: Lass sie! Denn ihre Seele ist betrübt und der Herr hat es mir verborgen und es mir nicht kundgetan.

Sie sprach zu ihm: Habe ich denn einen Sohn von meinem Herrn begehrt? Habe ich dir nicht gesagt: Täusche mich nicht?

Er sprach zu Giezi: Umgürte deine Lenden, nimm meinen Stab und gehe hin! Begegnet dir ein Mensch, so grüße ihn nicht, und grüßt dich jemand, so antworte ihm nicht, und lege meinen Stab auf das Angesicht des Knaben.

Die Mutter des Knaben aber sprach: So wahr der Herr lebt und deine Seele lebt, ich lasse dich nicht! Alsbald machte er sich auf und folgte ihr.

Giezi aber war ihnen vorausgegangen und hatte den Stab auf das Angesicht des Knaben gelegt, doch da war weder Laut noch Lebenszeichen. Da kehrte er um, ging ihm entgegen, meldete ihm und sprach: Der Knabe ist nicht aufgestanden.

Als nun Eliseus in das Haus kam, siehe, da lag der Knabe tot auf seinem Bette.

Da ging er hinein, verschloss die Türe hinter sich und hinter dem Knaben und betete zu dem Herrn.

Sodann stieg er hinauf, streckte sich über den Knaben, legte seinen Mund auf dessen Mund und seine Augen auf dessen Augen und seine Hände auf dessen Hände und beugte sich hin über ihn, da ward der Leib des Knaben warm.

Dann wendete er sich wieder weg und ging im Hause einmal hin und her, alsdann stieg er wieder hinauf und streckte sich über den Knaben; da gähnte derselbe siebenmal und tat seine Augen auf.

Hierauf rief Eliseus Giezi und sprach zu ihm: Rufe die Sunamitin! Sie kam auf den Ruf und ging zu ihm hinein. Und er sprach: Nimm deinen Sohn!

Jene kam, fiel ihm zu Füßen und verneigte sich bis zur Erde, alsdann nahm sie ihren Sohn und ging hinaus.

Elisa reinigt den Topf mit Eintopf

Hierauf kehrte Eliseus wieder nach Galgala zurück. Es herrschte aber eine Hungersnot im Lande und die Söhne der Propheten wohnten unter seiner Aufsicht.

Und einer ging auf das Feld hinaus, um Feldkräuter zu sammeln; dort fand er etwas wie eine Feldranke, sammelte von derselben wilde Kürbisse, füllte seinen Mantel damit, kam heim und schnitt sie in den Gemüsetopf; er wusste nämlich nicht, was es war.

Darauf richteten sie dieselben für die Genossen an, dass sie aßen; doch als sie von dem Gekochten gekostet hatten, schrieen sie und sprachen: Der Tod ist im Topfe, Mann Gottes! Und sie konnten es nicht essen.

Er aber sprach: Bringet Mehl herbei! Als sie dies gebracht hatten, warf er es in den Topf und sprach: Richte es an für die Gemeinde, dass sie essen! Nun war keine Bitterkeit mehr im Topfe.

Elisa speist einhundert Männer

(Matthäus 15,29-39; Markus 8,1-10)

Es kam aber ein Mann von Baalsalisa und brachte dem Manne Gottes Erstlingsbrote, zwanzig Gerstenbrote und neues Getreide in seinem Sacke. Dieser aber sprach: Gib es den Leuten, dass sie essen!

Sein Diener aber antwortete ihm: Wie viel ist das, dass ich es hundert Menschen vorsetzen sollte? Er sprach wiederum: Gib es den Leuten, dass sie essen! Denn so spricht der Herr: Sie werden essen und es wird noch übrigbleiben.

Er legte es ihnen also vor und sie aßen und es blieb noch übrig nach dem Worte des Herrn.
