- Kapitel 7 -

The value of wisdom

A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.(a)

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning; but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.(b)

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.(c)

Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.(d)

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.(e)

Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?

In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.(f)

The limits of human wisdom

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth his life in his wickedness.

Be not righteous over much; neither make thyself over wise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?(g)

Be not over much wicked, neither be thou foolish: why shouldest thou die before thy time?(h)

It is good that thou shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for he that feareth God shall come forth of them all.

Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.

For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.

Also take no heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant curse thee:(i)

For oftentimes also thine own heart knoweth that thou thyself likewise hast cursed others.

All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.

That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?

I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly, even of foolishness and madness:(j)

And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.(k)

Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account:(l)

Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.

Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

Der Wert der Weisheit

Was braucht der Mensch nach Dingen zu forschen, die für ihn zu hoch sind, da er nicht weiß, was ihm frommt in seinem Leben für die wenigen Tage seiner Wanderschaft, in der Zeit, welche wie ein Schatten vorübergeht? Oder wer kann ihm Kunde geben von dem, was nach ihm unter der Sonne sein wird?

Ein guter Name ist kostbarer als Salben und der Tag des Todes besser als der Tag der Geburt.

Besser ist es, in ein Trauerhaus zu gehen als in ein Haus des Trinkgelages, denn in jenem wird man an das Ende aller Menschen erinnert und der Lebende denkt an das, was kommen wird.

Besser ist Zürnen als Lachen, denn durch ein trübes Angesicht wird des Fehlenden Herz gebessert.

Das Herz der Weisen ist dort, wo Traurigkeit ist, und das Herz der Toren da, wo Lustigkeit ist.

Besser ist es, von einem Weisen zurechtgewiesen als durch Schmeichelei der Toren betrogen zu werden.

Denn wie das Knistern der Dornen, die unter dem Topfe brennen, so ist das Lachen des Toren, aber auch das ist Eitelkeit!

Erpressung macht den Weisen töricht und raubt ihm die Stärke des Herzens.

Besser ist das Ende einer Sache als ihr Beginn, besser ist der Geduldige als der Hochmütige.

Lass dich nicht leicht zum Zorne hinreißen, denn der Zorn hat seinen Ruheplatz im Busen der Toren.

Sage nicht: Wie kommt es doch, dass die früheren Zeiten besser waren als die jetzigen? Denn eine solche Frage ist töricht.

Weisheit ist nützlich wie Reichtum und noch mehr nützt sie denen, welche die Sonne sehen.

Denn wie die Weisheit Schutz gewährt, gewährt auch das Geld Schutz; aber darin hat Erfahrung und Weisheit den Vorzug, dass sie ihren Besitzer Leben geben.

Betrachte das Wirken Gottes, wie niemand den bessern kann, welchen er verwirft.

Die Grenzen der menschlichen Weisheit

Am guten Tage erfreue dich des Guten und bereite dich auf den schlimmen vor; denn so wie diesen, hat Gott auch jenen geschaffen, damit der Mensch keine gerechte Ursache finde, über ihn zu klagen.

Auch dies sah ich in den Tagen meiner Eitelkeit: Der Gerechte stirbt in seiner Gerechtigkeit und der Gottlose lebt lange in seiner Bosheit.

Sei nicht allzu gerecht und nicht weiser als nötig ist, damit du nicht ein Tor werdest.

Sündige nicht viel und sei kein Tor, dass du nicht sterbest, ehe deine Zeit gekommen.

Gut ist es, wenn du dich an das hältst, was recht ist, doch auch von jenem ziehe die Hand nicht zurück; denn wer Gott fürchtet, verabsäumt nichts.

Die Weisheit gibt dem Weisen mehr Stärke als zehn Machthaber in einer Stadt.

Denn es gibt auf Erden keinen Gerechten, der nur Gutes täte und nicht sündigte.

Jedoch nimm nicht alles Gerede zu Herzen, du möchtest dich sonst von deinem Knecht lästern hören;

ist ja dein Gewissen sich bewusst, dass auch du oft andere gelästert hast.

Alles habe ich mit Weisheit erprobt. Ich sprach: Ich will weise werden; aber sie entwich fern von mir,

viel weiter als zuvor; sie ist ein tiefer Abgrund; wer wird sie finden?

Ich durchforsche alles mit meinem Geiste, um Weisheit und Klugheit kennen zu lernen und zu erschauen und damit ich des Toren gottloses Wesen erkannte und den Irrtum der Unweisen;

und ich fand, dass bitterer als der Tod ein Weib ist, welches ein Fanggarn ist, dessen Herz ein Netz ist und dessen Hände Fesseln sind. Wer Gott gefällt, wird ihr entkommen; wer aber ein Sünder ist, wird von ihr gefangen werden.

Siehe, das fand ich, spricht der Prediger, eines zum anderen fügend, damit ich den rechten Grund fände,

den meine Seele noch sucht und den ich nicht gefunden habe. Einen Mann habe ich unter tausenden gefunden, ein Weib habe ich unter allen nicht gefunden.

Nur dies habe ich gefunden, dass Gott den Menschen recht geschaffen hat, dieser sich aber in unzählige Fragen verwickelt hat. Wer ist wie der Weise und wer versteht sich darauf ein Wort zu deuten?
