The Prophet Ezekiel

- Kapitel 18 -

The word of the Lord came unto me again, saying,

What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

As I live, saith the Lord God , ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right,(a)

And hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbour’s wife, neither hath come near to a menstruous woman,

And hath not oppressed any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

He that hath not given forth upon usury, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true judgment between man and man,

Hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept my judgments, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God .

If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth the like to any one of these things,(b)

And that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbour’s wife,

Hath oppressed the poor and needy, hath spoiled by violence, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination,

Hath given forth upon usury, and hath taken increase: shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.(d)

Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father’s sins which he hath done, and considereth, and doeth not such like,

That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife,

Neither hath oppressed any, hath not withholden the pledge, neither hath spoiled by violence, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment,(e)

That hath taken off his hand from the poor, that hath not received usury nor increase, hath executed my judgments, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live.

As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, spoiled his brother by violence, and did that which is not good among his people, lo, even he shall die in his iniquity.

Yet say ye, Why? doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? When the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live.

Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God : and not that he should return from his ways, and live?

But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die.

Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive.

Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal?

Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord God . Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin.(f)

Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord God : wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.(g)

Ein falsches Sprichwort widerlegt

Und es erging an mich das Wort des Herrn also:

Was soll dies, dass ihr gleichnisweise das Sprichwort unter euch im Lande Israel brauchet und sprechet: Die Väter haben sauere Trauben gegessen und den Kindern sind die Zähne stumpf geworden?

So wahr ich lebe! spricht der Herr, Gott, diese Gleichnisrede sollt ihr fortan nicht mehr als Sprichwort in Israel gebrauchen.

Sehet, mein sind alle Seelen; wie die Seele des Vaters, so ist auch die Seele des Sohnes mein; die Seele, welche sündigt, diese soll sterben!

Und wenn jemand gerecht ist, Recht und Gerechtigkeit übt,

auf den Bergen nicht Mahl hält, seine Augen nicht zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel erhebt, das Weib seines Nächsten nicht schändet und einem Weibe zur Zeit ihres Blutganges nicht naht,

niemanden bedrückt, das Pfand dem Schuldner wieder zurückgibt, nichts mit Gewalt raubt, sein Brot dem Hungrigen darreicht und den Nackten mit einem Gewande bekleidet,

nicht auf Wucher ausleiht und keine Zinsen nimmt, seine Hand vom Unrechte zurückhält und recht richtet zwischen Mann und Mann,

nach meinen Geboten wandelt und meine Rechte beobachtet, um nach der Wahrheit zu handeln: der ist gerecht, er soll leben! spricht der Herr, Gott.

Wenn er aber einen Sohn zeugt, der gewalttätig ist und Blut vergießt oder eines von diesen Dingen begeht,

wenn er sie auch nicht alle begeht, aber auf den Bergen Mahl hält, das Weib seines Nächsten schändet,

Dürftige und Arme bedrückt, Raub an sich rafft, das Pfand nicht zurückgibt, seien Augen zu den Götzen erhebt, Greuel verübt,

auf Wucher ausleiht und Zuschlag nimmt, sollte er leben? Nein, er soll nicht leben; da er alle diese Greuel verübt hat, soll er des Todes sterben, sein Blut wird über ihn selbst kommen!

Zeugt er aber einen Sohn, der zwar alle Sünden sieht, welche sein Vater beging, aber sich fürchtet und nichts dergleichen tut,

auf den Bergen nicht Mahl hält, seine Augen nicht zu den Götzen des Hauses Israel erhebt, das Weib seines Nächsten nicht schändet,

niemanden bedrückt, sein Pfand behält, nicht Raub an sich rafft, sein Brot dem Hungrigen darreicht, den Nackten mit einem Gewande bekleidet,

seine Hand von dem Unrecht gegen den Armen zurückhält, Wucher und Zuschlag nicht nimmt, meine rechte hält und nach meinen Geboten wandelt: ein solcher soll nicht sterben wegen der Verschuldung seines Vaters, sondern leben!

Sein Vater, der Bedrückung geübt, seinen Brüdern Gewalt angetan und in der Mitte seines Volkes Böses verübt hat, sehet, er wird um seiner Verschuldung willen sterben.

Wende dich und lebe

Ihr sprecht: Warum trägt denn der Sohn nicht die Verschuldung des Vaters? Darum, weil der Sohn Recht und Gerechtigkeit geübt, alle meine Gebote beobachtet und sie erfüllt hat, soll er leben!

Die Seele, welche sündigt, diese soll des Todes sterben! der Sohn soll die Schuld des Vaters nicht tragen und der Vater die Schuld des Sohnes nicht tragen; die Gerechtigkeit des Gerechten soll auf dem Gerechten bleiben und die Schuld des Gottlosen über diesen kommen.

Wenn aber der Gottlose Buße tut für alle seine Sünden, die er begangen, und alle meine Gebote bewahrt und Recht und Gerechtigkeit übt, so soll er leben und nicht sterben.

Ich will all seiner Sünden, die er begangen, nicht mehr gedenken; um seiner Gerechtigkeit willen, die er geübt, soll er leben.

Sollte ich etwa am Tode des Gottlosen Wohlgefallen haben, spricht der Herr, Gott, und nicht vielmehr daran, dass er sich von seinen Wegen bekehre und lebe?

Wenn sich aber der Gerechte von seiner Gerechtigkeit abwendet und Böses tut, gleich all den Greueln, welche der Gottlose zu verüben pflegt, sollte er da leben? All seiner Gerechtigkeit, die er geübt, soll nicht mehr gedacht werden; ob seiner Übertretung, die er begangen, und um seiner Sünden willen, die er verübt, um dieser willen soll er sterben.

Wenn ihr aber sprechet: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht recht! Höret doch, Haus Israel: Ist mein Weg nicht recht und sind nicht vielmehr eure Wege verkehrt?

denn wenn der Gerechte sich abwendet von seiner Gerechtigkeit und Sünde begeht, so wird er deshalb sterben; um des Schlechten willen, das er begangen hat, wird er sterben!

Aber wenn der Gottlose sich von seiner Gottlosigkeit, die er verübt hat, abwendet und Recht und Gerechtigkeit übt, so wird er seiner Seele das Leben gewinnen.

Denn geht er in sich und wendet er sich ab von allen seinen Sünden, die er begangen hat, so wird er gewiss leben und nicht sterben!

Doch die Söhne Israels sprechen: Der Weg des Herrn ist nicht recht! Sind wirklich meine Wege nicht recht, Haus Israel, und nicht vielmehr eure Wege verkehrt?

Deshalb, Haus Israel! werde ich einen jeden nach seinen Wegen richten, spricht der Herr, Gott. Bekehret euch und tuet Buße für alle eure Sünden, so wird die Schuld euch nicht zum Verderben gereichen.

Werfet von euch all eure Untreue durch die ihr euch vergangen habt, und machet euch ein neues Herz und einen neuen Geist; denn warum wollt ihr sterben, Haus Israel?

Ich will ja nicht den Tod dessen, der stirbt, spricht der Herr, Gott, bekehret euch und lebet! V. 23
