- Kapitel 32 -

And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim.(a)

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.(b)

And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

And said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the other company which is left shall escape.

And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee:

I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.(c)

Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me, and the mother with the children.(d)

And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;

Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,

Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.

And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove.

And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee?

Then thou shalt say, They be thy servant Jacob’s; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us.

And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him.

And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me.(e)

So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

Jacob Wrestles with God

And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.

And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.(f)

And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.(g)

And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.

And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.

And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.

And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.(h)

And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.

And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.(i)

And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.

Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

Esau kommt Jakob entgegen

Auch Jakob zog seines Weges dahin, den er eingeschlagen; da begegneten ihm Engel Gottes.

Da er diese sah, sprach er: Dies ist das Heerlager Gottes, und er nannte den Namen dieses Ortes Mahanaim, das ist Lager.

Nun aber sandte er Boten voraus an seinen Bruder Esau, in das Land Seir, in das Gebiet von Edom,

und gebot ihnen und sprach: So sollt Esau, meinem Herrn, ihr sagen: Also spricht dein Bruder Jakob: ich habe bei Laban als Fremdling geweilt und war bei ihm bis auf diesen Tag.

Ich habe Rinder und Esel, Schafe und Knechte und Mägde, und nun sende ich Botschaft zu meinem Herrn, dass ich Gnade in deinen Augen finde.

Und die Boten kehrten zu Jakob zurück und sprachen: Wir kamen zu Esau, deinem Bruder, und siehe, er eilt dir mit vierhundert Mann entgegen.

Da fürchtete sich Jakob sehr, und von Schrecken ergriffen, teilte er die Leute, welche er bei sich hatte, ebenso die Herden, die Schafe, die Rinder und die Kamele in zwei Scharen,

und sprach: Wenn Esau zu einer Schar kommt und sie schlägt, so wird die andere erhalten werden, welche noch übrig ist.

Und Jakob sprach: Gott meines Vaters Abraham und Gott meines Vaters Isaak, Herr, der du mir gesagt hast: Kehre zurück in dein Vaterland und an den Ort, wo du geboren bist, und ich will dir Gutes tun;

ich bin nicht wert aller deiner Erbarmungen und all der Treue, die du deinem Knechte erwiesen hast. Mit einem Stabe überschritt ich den Jordan dort, und nun kehre ich zurück mit zwei Scharen.

Rette mich aus der Hand meines Bruders Esau; denn ich fürchte mich sehr vor ihm, er möchte kommen und die Mutter mit den Kindern erschlagen.

Du hast ja verheißen, mir Gutes zu tun, und meine Nachkommenschaft zu vermehren wie den Sand des Meeres, den man nicht zählen kann vor Menge!

Und nachdem er daselbst in dieser Nacht geschlafen, sonderte er von dem, was er hatte, Geschenke für Esau, seinen Bruder, aus:

Zweihundert Ziegen, zwanzig Böcke, zweihundert Schafe und zwanzig Widder,

dreißig säugende Kamele mit ihren Füllen, vierzig Kühe und zwanzig Stiere, zwanzig Eselinnen und zehn Füllen derselben.

Und er sandte sie durch seine Knechte, je eine Herde besonders, und sprach zu seinen Knechten: Ziehet vor mir her und lasset Raum zwischen den Herden.

Sodann gebot er dem ersten und sprach: Wenn dir mein Bruder Esau begegnet und dich fragt: Wem gehörst du, oder wohin ziehest du? oder wem gehört dies da vor dir?

so antworte: Deinem Knechte Jakob, er hat es meinem Herrn Esau als Geschenk gesandt; und er selber folgt uns auf dem Fuße.

Ebenso gebot er dem zweiten, und dem dritten, und allen, die hinter den Herden hergingen, und sprach: Dasselbe sollt ihr zu Esau sagen, wenn ihr ihm begegnet.

Auch setzet hinzu: Er selbst, dein Knecht Jakob, folgt uns auf dem Fuße nach. Denn er sprach: Ich will ihn durch die Geschenke, die mir vorausgehen, versöhnen, und erst dann will ich ihn sehen; vielleicht dass er mich freundlich aufnimmt.

So gingen also die Geschenke vor ihm her; er selbst aber blieb in jener Nacht im Lager.

Ringen mit Gott

Am frühen Morgen stand er auf, und nahm seine zwei Frauen, und die zwei Mägde mit seinen elf Söhnen, und ging über die Furt des Jakob,

und brachte alles hinüber, was ihm gehörte,

und blieb allein. Und siehe, ein Mann rang mit ihm bis zum Anbruch der Morgenröte.

Als dieser sah, dass er ihn nicht bezwingen könne, berührte er mit der Hand eine Sehne seiner Hüfte, und alsbald war ihre Kraft dahin.

Da sprach er zu ihm: Lass mich, denn die Morgenröte steigt schon herauf. Er antwortete: ich lasse dich nicht, du segnest mich denn!

Da sprach er: Welches ist dein Name? Er antwortete: Jakob.

Jener aber sprach: Nicht sollst du ferner Jakob heißen, sondern Israel; denn wenn du mit Gott tapfer gekämpft hast, wie viel mehr wirst du über Menschen Sieger bleiben?

Da fragte Jakob ihn: Sage mir, wie du heißest? Er antwortete: Warum fragst du nach meinem Namen? Und er segnete ihn daselbst.

Jakob aber nannte den Namen jenes Ortes Phanuel und sprach: Ich habe Gott von Angesicht zu Angesicht gesehen, und dennoch blieb ich am Leben.

Und alsbald ging die Sonne auf vor ihm, als er von Phanuel weiter ging; er hinkte aber an seinem Fuße.

Darum essen die Kinder Israels bis auf den heutigen Tag die Sehne nicht, welche in der Hüfte Jakobs erlahmte; deshalb weil er die Sehne seiner Hüfte berührte und diese gelähmt ward.
