- Kapitel 33 -

And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, Esau came, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids.

And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost.

And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.

And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

And he lifted up his eyes, and saw the women and the children; and said, Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God hath graciously given thy servant.(a)

Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.

And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, and they bowed themselves.

And he said, What meanest thou by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find grace in the sight of my lord.(b)

And Esau said, I have enough, my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself.(c)

And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found grace in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; because God hath dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it.(d)

And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.

And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.

Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir.(e)

And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee some of the folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it? let me find grace in the sight of my lord.(f)

So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir.

And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth.(h)

Jacob Settles in Shechem

And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan–aram; and pitched his tent before the city.(i)

And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for an hundred pieces of money.(j)

And he erected there an altar, and called it El–elohe–Israel.(l)

Jakob und Esau treffen sich

Als nun Jakob seine Augen erhob, sah er Esau kommen, und mit ihm vierhundert Mann. Da teilte er die Kinder Lias und Rachels, und die Kinder der beiden Mägde;

und stellte die beiden Mägde und ihre Kinder an die Spitze, Lia und ihre Kinder dahinter, Rachel aber und Joseph zuletzt.

Und er selbst ging voraus und verneigte sich siebenmal bis zur Erde, bis sein Bruder sich ihm näherte.

Da lief Esau seinem Bruder entgegen, und umarmte ihn, und fiel ihm um den Hals und küsste ihn, und weinte.

Und als er aufblickte, sah er die Frauen samt ihren Kindern und sprach: Wer sind denn diese? Und gehören sie dir? Er antwortete: Es sind die Kinder, welche Gott mir, deinem Knechte, geschenkt hat.

Da traten die Mägde und ihre Söhne herzu und verneigten sich.

Sodann trat auch Lia mit ihren Kindern herzu, und da auch sie sich bis zur Erde verneigt hatten, kamen zuletzt Joseph und Rachel und verneigten sich bis zur Erde.

Da sprach Esau: Was sind das für Züge, welch mir begegnet sind? Er antwortete: Ich wünschte Gnade zu finden vor meinem Herrn!

Esau aber sprach: Ich habe sehr viel, mein Bruder, behalte, was dein ist.

Und Jakob sprach: Nicht also! ich bitte; sondern wenn ich in deinen Augen Gnade gefunden habe, so nimm diese kleine Gabe aus meinen Händen an; denn ich schaute dein Angesicht, wie wenn ich das Angesicht Gottes geschaut hätte. Sei mir huldreich

und nimm den Segen an, den ich dir gebracht, und den Gott mir beschert hat, der mir alles gegeben. Da sein Bruder so in ihn drang, nahm er es mit Mühe an

und sprach: Lass uns miteinander ziehen, und ich will dein Reisegefährte sein.

Aber Jakob sprach: Du weißt, mein Herr, ich habe zarte Rinder und säugende Schafe und Kühe bei mir; wenn ich sie über Gebühr auf der Reise anstrenge, so werden alle Herden an einem Tage umkommen.

Mein Gebieter wolle vor seinem Knechte vorausziehen, und ich werde ihm langsam nachfolgen, so wie ich sehe, dass meine Rinder es vermögen, bis ich zu meinem Herrn nach Seir komme.

Da antwortete Esau: So bitte ich dich, doch von den Leuten, die bei mir sind, einige als Reisebegleiter zu behalten. Er sprach: Es ist nicht notwendig! Nur dies einen bedarf ich, dass ich Gnade in deinen Augen finde, mein Gebieter!

So kehrte Esau an jenem Tage auf dem Wege, den er gekommen war, nach Seir zurück.

Und Jakob kam nach Sokoth, und baute sich dort ein Haus, und errichtete Hütten, und nannte den Namen des Ortes Sokoth, das ist Hütten.

Und er zog weiter hinüber nach Salem, der Stadt der Sichemiten, welche im Lande Chanaan liegt, nachdem er aus Mesopotamien in Syrien zurückgekehrt war, und ließ sich bei der Stadt nieder.

Den Teil des Ackers aber, auf dem er seine Hütten aufgeschlagen hatte, kaufte er von den Kindern Hemors, des Vaters Sichems, für hundert Lämmer,

und errichtete daselbst einen Altar, und rief allda den starken Gott Israels an.
