- Kapitel 38 -

(1 Chronicles 2:3–4)

And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord ; and the Lord slew him.

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

And the thing which he did displeased the Lord : wherefore he slew him also.(a)

Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

And in process of time the daughter of Shuah Judah’s wife died; and Judah was comforted, and went up unto his sheepshearers to Timnath, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.(b)

And it was told Tamar, saying, Behold thy father in law goeth up to Timnath to shear his sheep.

And she put her widow’s garments off from her, and covered her with a vail, and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.(c)

When Judah saw her, he thought her to be an harlot; because she had covered her face.

And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?

And he said, I will send thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a pledge, till thou send it?(d)

And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, and came in unto her, and she conceived by him.

And she arose, and went away, and laid by her vail from her, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.

Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no harlot in this place.(e)

And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no harlot in this place.

And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this kid, and thou hast not found her.(f)

And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the signet, and bracelets, and staff.

And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.

The Birth of Perez and Zerah

And it came to pass in the time of her travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb.

And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first.

And it came to pass, as he drew back his hand, that, behold, his brother came out: and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez.(g)

Juda und Tamar

(1. Chronik 2,3-4)

Um eben diese Zeit verließ Judas seine Brüder und ließ sich bei einem Manne von Odollam, mit Namen Hiram, nieder.

Daselbst sah er die Tochter eines Chananiters, mit Namen Sue, und nahm sie zum Weibe und ging zu ihr.

Da empfing sie, und gebar einen Sohn, und nannte seinen Namen Her.

Und sie empfing abermals und gebar einen Sohn, den nannte sie Onan.

Sodann gebar sie einen dritten Sohn, den nannte sie Sela. Nach diesem gebar sie keine Kinder mehr.

Judas aber gab Her, seinem Erstgeborenen, ein Weib, Namens Thamar.

Doch Her, der Erstgeborene des Judas, war böse in den Augen des Herrn; und der Herr tötete ihn.

Da sprach Judas zu Onan, seinem Sohne: Begib dich zu dem Weibe deines Bruders und nimm sie zur Ehe, dass du deinem Bruder Nachkommenschaft erweckest.

Da aber Onan wusste, dass die Söhne nicht ihm geboren würden, so ließ er, wenn er zu dem Weibe seines Bruders ging, den Samen auf die Erde fallen, damit auf seines Bruders Namen keine Kinder geboren würden.

Darum tötete ihn der Herr, weil er Verabscheuungswürdiges tat.

Deshalb sprach Judas zu Thamar, seiner Schwiegertochter: Bleibe als Witwe im Hause deines Vaters, bis mein Sohn Sela heranwächst. Denn er fürchtete, auch dieser möchte sterben, wie seine Brüder. Da ging sie hin und wohnte im Hause ihres Vaters.

Als aber viele Tage vergangen waren, starb die Tochter Sues, das Weib Judas. Und nachdem Judas ausgetrauert und wieder froh geworden war, begab er sich hinauf zu seinen Schafscherern nach Thamnas, er und der Odollamiter Hiras, sein Schafhirt.

Und es ward Thamar berichtet, dass ihr Schwiegervater nach Thamnas zur Schafschur hinaufgehe.

Da legte sie ihre Witwenkleider ab, und nahm einen Schleier, und setzte sich verkleidet an den Scheideweg, wo die Straße nach Thamnas führt; darum weil Sela herangewachsen war und sie ihn doch nicht zum Manne erhalten hatte.

Als Judas sie sah, hielt er sie für eine Buhldirne; denn sie hatte ihr Angesicht verhüllt, um nicht erkannt zu werden.

Da trat er zu ihr heran und sprach: Lass mich dir beiwohnen! er wusste nämlich nicht, dass sie seine Schwiegertochter war. Sie antwortete: Was willst du mir geben, dass du mir beiwohnen darfst?

Er sprach: Ich will dir einen Ziegenbock von der Herde senden. Sie sprach wiederum: Ich will dir zu Willen sein, wenn du mir ein Pfand gibst, bis dahin, wo du mir das sendest, was du versprichst.

Judas sprach: Was soll ich dir zum Pfande geben? Sie antwortete: Deinen Siegelring, dein Armband und den Stab, den du in der Hand hast. Aus dieser einen Beiwohnung also empfing das Weib.

Hierauf machte sie sich auf, und ging von dannen, und legte die Kleider ab, die sie angetan, und zog ihre Witwenkleider an.

Judas aber sandte den Ziegenbock durch seinen Hirten, den Odollamiter, um dagegen das Pfand zurück zu erhalten, welches er dem Weibe gegeben hatte. Da dieser es aber nicht fand,

fragte er die Leute jenes Ortes: Wo ist das Weib, welches am Scheideweg saß? Doch alle antworteten: An diesem Orte ist keine Buhldirne gewesen.

Da kehrte er zu Judas zurück und sprach zu ihm: Ich habe sie nicht gefunden, auch sagten die Leute jenes Ortes, dort habe niemals eine Buhldirne gesessen.

Judas sprach: So mag sie es behalten, wenigstens kann sie uns nicht Lügen strafen, ich habe den Ziegenbock, den ich versprochen, gesendet, und du hast sie nicht gefunden.

Aber siehe, nach drei Monaten ward dem Judas berichtet: Deine Schwiegertochter Thamar hat gebuhlt, und es wird sichtbar, dass sie schwanger ist. Da sprach Judas: Führet sie hinaus, dass sie verbrannt werde.

Als sie nun zur Vollstreckung der Strafe hinausgeführt wurde, sandte sie zu ihrem Schwiegervater und ließ ihm sagen: Von dem Manne, dem dies da gebärt, habe ich empfangen; siehe zu, wem der Ring, das Armband, und der Stab gehören.

Da erkannte er seine Pfandgaben und sprach: Sie ist gerechter als ich; denn ich habe sie meinem Sohne Sela nicht gegeben. Er hatte aber fortan keinen Umgang mit ihr.

Als nun die Zeit da war, da sie gebären sollte, fanden sich Zwillinge in ihrem Leibe. Und bei der Geburt tat einer die Hand heraus; da band die Wehemutter einen roten Faden um dieselbe und sprach:

Dieser wird zuerst herauskommen.

Er aber zog die Hand zurück, und nun kam der andere hervor. Da sprach das Weib: Warum ist deinetwillen die Hülle zerrissen worden? und darum nannte man seinen Namen Phares.

Darnach kam sein Bruder hervor, an dessen Hand der rote Faden war; und man nannte ihn Zara.
