- Kapitel 50 -

And Joseph fell upon his father’s face, and wept upon him, and kissed him.

And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father: and the physicians embalmed Israel.

And forty days were fulfilled for him; for so are fulfilled the days of those which are embalmed: and the Egyptians mourned for him threescore and ten days.(a)

And when the days of his mourning were past, Joseph spake unto the house of Pharaoh, saying, If now I have found grace in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying,

My father made me swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have digged for me in the land of Canaan, there shalt thou bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and bury my father, and I will come again.

And Pharaoh said, Go up, and bury thy father, according as he made thee swear.

And Joseph went up to bury his father: and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their herds, they left in the land of Goshen.

And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen: and it was a very great company.

And they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan, and there they mourned with a great and very sore lamentation: and he made a mourning for his father seven days.

And when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning in the floor of Atad, they said, This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians: wherefore the name of it was called Abel–mizraim, which is beyond Jordan.(b)

And his sons did unto him according as he commanded them:

For his sons carried him into the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, which Abraham bought with the field for a possession of a buryingplace of Ephron the Hittite, before Mamre.

And Joseph returned into Egypt, he, and his brethren, and all that went up with him to bury his father, after he had buried his father.

Joseph Comforts His Brothers

And when Joseph’s brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,(c)

So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.(d)

The Death of Joseph

And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he, and his father’s house: and Joseph lived an hundred and ten years.

And Joseph saw Ephraim’s children of the third generation: the children also of Machir the son of Manasseh were brought up upon Joseph’s knees.(e)

And Joseph said unto his brethren, I die: and God will surely visit you, and bring you out of this land unto the land which he sware to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

And Joseph took an oath of the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you, and ye shall carry up my bones from hence.

So Joseph died, being an hundred and ten years old: and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.

Da Joseph dieses sah, warf er sich über das Angesicht seines Vaters, weinend und ihn küssend.

Und er gebot seinen Ärzten, die ihm dienten, seinen Vater einzubalsamieren.

Während sie vollzogen, was ihnen befohlen war, vergingen vierzig Tage; denn so war es Brauch bei der Einbalsamierung der Leiber; und Ägypten beweinte ihn siebzig Tage.

Als nun die Zeit der Totenklage vorüber war, sprach Joseph zu den Hofleuten Pharaos: Habe ich Gnade in euren Augen gefunden, so saget zu Pharao,

dass mein Vater mich hat schwören lassen und gesagt hat: Siehe, ich sterbe, begrabe mich in meinem Grabe, welches ich mir im Lande Chanaan gegraben habe. So möchte ich nun hinaufziehen und meinen Vater begraben, und dann werde ich zurückkehren.

Da sprach Pharao zu ihm: Ziehe hinauf und begrabe deinen Vater, wie er dich hat schwören lassen.

So zog er den hinauf, und es zogen mit ihm alle Würdenträger des Hauses Pharaos, und alle Ältesten des Landes Ägypten.

das Haus Josephs mit seinen Brüdern, ausgenommen die Kinder und die Herden und das Vieh, welche sie im Lande Gessen zurückließen.

Auch hatte er Wagen und Reiter als Gefolge, und es ward eine gewaltige Schar.

Als sie nun zur Tenne Atad kamen, welche jenseits des Jordans liegt, feierten sie daselbst das Leichenbegräbnis mit großer und schwerer Totenklage, sieben Tage hindurch.

Als dies die Bewohner des Landes Chanaan sahen, sprachen sie: Eine große Totenfeier der Ägypter findet dort statt, und darum ward der Name dieses Ortes Klage Ägyptens genannt.

Die Söhne Jakobs taten also, wie er ihnen geboten hatte,

und führten ihn in das Land Chanaan, und begruben ihn in der Doppelhöhle, welche Abraham samt dem Acker zum erbeigenen Begräbnis von dem Hethiter Ephron gekauft hatte, Mambre gegenüber.

Und Joseph kehrte mit seinen Brüdern und seinem ganzen Gefolge nach Ägypten zurück, nachdem er seinen Vater begraben.

Joseph beruhigt seine Brüder

Da nun Jakob tot war, fürchteten sich die Brüder Josephs und sprachen zueinander: Wenn er nur nicht des Unrechtes gedenkt, dass er erlitten hat, und uns all das Böse vergilt, das wir ihm angetan haben!

Und sie ließen ihm sagen: Dein Vater gebot uns, ehe er starb,

wir sollten dir dieses mit seinen Worten sagen: Ich bitte, vergiss doch die böse Tat deiner Brüder, und die Sünde und die Bosheit, die sie an dir verübt haben; und auch wir bitten, du wollest den Dienern des Gottes deines Vaters diese böse Tat vergeben. Als Joseph dies hörte, weinte er.

Und seine Brüder kamen zu ihm, und warfen sich vor ihm zur Erde nieder, und sprachen: Wir sind deine Knechte.

Er antwortete ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht; können wir etwa Gottes Willen widerstehen?

Ihr freilich sannet Böses gegen mich, Gott aber hat es zum Guten gewendet, um mich zu erheben, wie ihr jetzt sehet, und viele Völker zu erhalten.

Fürchtet euch nicht, ich werde für euern und eurer Kinder Unterhalt sorgen. Und er tröstete sie und sprach freundlich und sanft zu ihnen.

Josephs Tod

Und er wohnte in Ägypten mit dem gesamten Hause seines Vaters und lebte hundert und zehn Jahre. Und er sah von Ephraim Söhne bis in das dritte Glied; auch Machir, dem Sohne Manasses, wurden auf Josephs Knieen Söhne geboren.

Nach diesen Begebnissen sprach Joseph zu seinen Brüdern: Nach meinem Tode wird Gott euch heimsuchen und euch aus diesem Lande in das Land hinaufziehen lassen, das er dem Abraham, Isaak und Jakob zugeschworen hat.

Und er ließ sie schwören und sprach: Gott wird euch heimsuchen; führet alsdann meine Gebeine mit euch von diesem Orte hier hinweg.

Und er starb, hundert und zehn Jahre alt. Da balsamierten sie ihn ein und legten ihn in Ägypten in einen Sarg.
