- Kapitel 28 -

Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which are on the head of the fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!(a)

Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:(b)

And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fat valley, shall be a fading flower, and as the hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.(c)

In that day shall the Lord of hosts be for a crown of glory, and for a diadem of beauty, unto the residue of his people,

And for a spirit of judgment to him that sitteth in judgment, and for strength to them that turn the battle to the gate.

But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment.

For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.(d)

For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little:(e)

For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.(f)

To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

But the word of the Lord was unto them precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.

A Cornerstone in Zion

(1 Corinthians 3:10–15; Ephesians 2:19–22; 1 Peter 2:1–8)

Wherefore hear the word of the Lord , ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves:

Therefore thus saith the Lord God , Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.(h)

From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report.(i)

For the bed is shorter than that a man can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he can wrap himself in it.

For the Lord shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon, that he may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

Now therefore be ye not mockers, lest your bands be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord God of hosts a consumption, even determined upon the whole earth.

Listen and Hear

Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.

Doth the plowman plow all day to sow? doth he open and break the clods of his ground?

When he hath made plain the face thereof, doth he not cast abroad the fitches, and scatter the cummin, and cast in the principal wheat and the appointed barley and the rie in their place?(j)

For his God doth instruct him to discretion, and doth teach him.(m)

For the fitches are not threshed with a threshing instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned about upon the cummin; but the fitches are beaten out with a staff, and the cummin with a rod.

Bread corn is bruised; because he will not ever be threshing it, nor break it with the wheel of his cart, nor bruise it with his horsemen.

This also cometh forth from the Lord of hosts, which is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in working.

Wehe dem Ephraim und Jerusalem

Wehe der Krone des Hochmutes, den Trunkenen Ephraims, der welkenden Blume seines Rühmens, denen, die auf dem Gipfel des üppigsten Tales waren, taumelnd von Wein.

Sehet, stark und gewaltig kommt der Herr, wie ein Hagelsturm, wie ein zerschmetternder Wirbelwind, wie der Anprall vieler reißender Gewässer, die weithin Erde überströmen.

Mit Füßen wird zertreten die Hochmutskrone der Trunkenen Ephraims.

Und der abwelkenden Blume, der Herrlichkeit seines Rühmens, die auf dem Gipfel des üppigen Tales ist, wird es ergehen wie einer Frühfeige, bevor die Herbstreise kommt: hat sie jemand erblickt, so ergreift er sie sogleich und verzehrt sie.

An jenem Tage wird der Herr der Heerscharen die Krone der Herrlichkeit und der Jubelkranz für die Übriggebliebenen seines Volkes sein

und Geist des Rechtes dem, der zu Gericht sitzt, und Stärke denen, die aus dem Kriege zum Tore heimkehren.

Doch auch diese sind sinnlos vor Wein und taumeln vor Trunkenheit; Priester und Prophet sind sinnlos vor Trunkenheit, übermannt vom Weine, taumeln in Trunkenheit, verstehen den Seher nicht, wissen um kein Recht.

Denn alle Tische sind voll von Gespei und Unrat, so dass kein Platz mehr ist.

Wen will er Erkenntnis lehren? Und wem seine Lehre vernehmlich machen? Den von der Milch Entwöhnten, den von der Mutterbrust Genommenen?

Denn: Befehl und wieder Befehl, Befehl und wieder Befehl, Harren und wieder Harren, Harren und wieder Harren, bald hier ein wenig, bald dort ein wenig.

Denn mit Lippengemurmel und in einer fremden Sprache wird er zu diesem Volk reden!

Er sprach zu ihm: Dies ist meine Ruhe, erquicket die Müden, dies ist meine Erquickung; aber sie wollten nicht hören.

Und es wird ihnen das Wort vom Herrn zuteil: Immer Befehl und wieder Befehl, immer Befehl und wieder Befehl, Harren und wieder Harren, Harren und wieder Harren, bald hier ein wenig, bald dort ein wenig, dass sie hingehen und rücklings fallen, zerschmettert, verstrickt und gefangen werden.

Daher höret das Wort des Herrn, ich Männer des Spottes! Die ihr über mein Volk zu Jerusalem herrscht.

Denn ihr habt gesagt: Wir haben einen Bund mit dem Tode geschlossen und einen Vertrag mit der Unterwelt gemacht. Wenn die Geißel überflutend daherfährt, wird sie uns nicht treffen; denn wir haben die Lüge zu unserer Hoffnung gemacht und sind durch die Lüge geschützt.

Ein Eckstein in Zion

Darum spricht der Herr, Gott, also: Sehet, ich lege in Sions Grundfesten einen Stein, einen bewährten Stein, einen kostbaren Eckstein, der auf festem Grunde liegt; wer glaubt, soll nicht eilen!

Und ich werde zum Gewicht das Recht und die Gerechtigkeit zum Maße machen und der Hagel wird die Hoffnung auf die Lüge vernichten und das Wehr werden Wasser hinwegschwemmen.

Und euer Bund mit dem Tode soll vernichtet werden und euer Vertrag mit der Unterwelt keine Geltung haben; wenn die Geißel flutend daherfährt, wird sie euch niederschlagen.

Wann immer sie daherfährt, wird sie euch hinwegraffen; denn früh morgens wird sie kommen, bei Tag und bei Nacht, und nur Drangsal allein wird euch lehren, die Ankündigung zu verstehen.

Denn zu eng wird das Bett dann sein, so dass einer herabfällt; und das Oberkleid so kurz, dass es beide nicht bedecken kann.

Denn wie auf dem Berge der Teilungen wird der Herr sich erheben und wie im Tale zu Gabaon zürnen, dass er sein Werk vollbringe, sein befremdliches Werk; dass er kein Werk wirke, ungewöhnlich ist sein Werk vor ihm.

Und jetzt treibet nicht Gespött, dass eure Bande nicht noch fester geschlungen werden; denn ich habe von einer Vertilgung und Vernichtung gehört, die der Herr, der Gott der Heerscharen, über die ganze Erde beschlossen hat.

Hört auf die Lehre Gottes

Vernehmet und höret meine Stimme, merket auf und höret auf meine Rede!

Pflügt etwa der Pflüger den ganzen Tag, um zu säen, durchfurcht und eggt er seinen Acker immerfort?

Wird er nicht, wenn er dessen Fläche geebnet, Dill ausstreuen, Kümmel auswerfen und Weizen reihenweis legen; und Gerste, Hirse und Spelt an seinen Rand?

Und er unterweist ihn zum Rechten, und sein Gott belehrt ihn.

Denn Dill wird nicht mit dem Dreschschlitten ausgedroschen, noch geht das Dreschrad über den Kümmel, sondern mit einem Stabe klopft man den Dill aus und den Kümmel mit einem Stecken.

Brotkorn aber wird zermalmt; jedoch drischt der Drescher es nicht immerfort, noch lässt er über dasselbe beständig das Wagenrad rollen oder es durch seiner Tiere Hufe zertreten.

Und dies ging von dem Herrn, dem Gott der Heerscharen aus, dass er seine Ratschlüsse wunderbar mache und seine Gerechtigkeit verherrliche!
