- Kapitel 2 -

Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord ; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.(a)

Israel was holiness unto the Lord , and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord .

Hear ye the word of the Lord , O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

Thus saith the Lord , What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

Neither said they, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.(b)

The priests said not, Where is the Lord ? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord , and with your children’s children will I plead.

For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.(c)

Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord .

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

The Consequence of Israel’s Sin

Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?(d)

The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.(e)

Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.(f)

Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way?

And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts.

For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.(g)

Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God .

Israel’s Unfaithfulness

(Judges 2:10–15; Isaiah 43:22–28)

How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;(h)

A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.(i)

Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.(m)

As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.(n)

But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.(p)

Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord .

In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

O generation, see ye the word of the Lord . Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?(q)

Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.(r)

Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.

Gottes Anklage gegen Israel

Und es erging das Wort des Herrn an mich also:

Gehe hin und rufe vor den Ohren Jerusalems und sprich: So spricht der Herr: Ich habe deiner gedacht, mich deiner Jugend erbarmend und der Liebe deines Brautstandes, da du mir durch die Wüste folgtest, durch unbesätes Land.

Israel war dem Herrn geheiligt, der Erstlingsertrag seiner Früchte; alle, die es verzehren, laden Verschuldung auf sich; Unglück wird über sie kommen, spricht der Herr.

Höret das Wort des Herrn, Haus Jakob und ihr, alle Geschlechter des Hauses Israel!

So spricht der Herr: Was haben eure Väter Unrechtes an mir gefunden, dass sie sich von mir entfernt haben und der Nichtigkeit nachgegangen und nichtig geworden sind?

Sie sagten nicht: Wo ist der Herr, der uns aus dem Lande Ägypten hergeführt hat; der uns durch die Wüste geleitet, durch ein unbewohntes und ungebahntes Land, durch ein Land der Dürre, das Bild des Todes, durch ein Land, das niemand durchzieht noch ein Mensch bewohnt?

Und ich brachte euch in ein Land des Fruchtgefildes, dass ihr seine Früchte und seine besten Güter genosset; aber als ihr in dasselbe gekommen waret, beflecktet ihr mein Land und machtet mein Erbe zu einem Greuel.

Die Priester sagten nicht: Wo ist der Herr? Und die mit dem Gesetz umgehen, wollten mich nicht kennen, die Hirten waren untreu gegen mich und die Propheten weissagten im Namen Baals und gingen den Götzenbildern nach.

Darum werde ich fernerhin mit euch ins Gericht gehen, spricht der Herr, und ich werde mit euren Kindern Streit führen.

Gehet hinüber zu den Inseln der Kethiter und schauet euch um, sendet hin nach Kedar und gebt wohl acht und sehet, ob je dergleichen geschehen ist.

Hat etwa ein Volk seine Götter vertauscht? Und jene sind nicht einmal Götter! Mein Volk aber hat seine Herrlichkeit gegen einen Götzen vertauscht.

Entsetzet euch drüber, ihr Himmel, und ihr Pforten der Himmel, betrübet euch gar sehr! spricht der Herr.

Denn zweifaches Übel hat mein Volk getan: Mich haben sie verlassen, den Quell lebendigen Wassers, und haben sich Brunnen gegraben, Brunnen, die durchlöchert sind und kein Wasser zu halten vermögen.

Ist denn Israel ein Knecht oder der Sohn einer Magd? Warum ist er also zur Beute geworden?

Die Löwen brüllten wider ihn und ließen ihre Stimme erschallen, sie machten sein Land zur Wüste; seine Städte sind niedergebrannt und niemand wohnt darin.

Auch die Söhne von Memphis und Taphnes haben dich geschändet bis zum Scheitel.

Ist dir dies nicht deshalb geschehen, weil du den Herrn, deinen Gott, verließest zu der Zeit, als er dein Führer war auf dem Wege?

Und nun, was willst du auf dem Wege nach Ägypten, um trübes Wasser zu trinken? und was soll dir der Weg zu den Assyriern, um das Wasser des Stromes zu trinken?

Deine Bosheit wird dir Züchtigung und dein Abfall von mir dir Strafe bringen. So werde denn inne und siehe, dass es böse und bitter ist, dass du den Herrn, deinen Gott, verlassen und dass keine Furcht vor mir bei dir ist, spricht der Herr, der Gott der Heerscharen.

Vorlängst hast du mein Joch zerbrochen, meine Bande zerrissen und gesagt: Ich will nicht dienen! Denn auf jedem hohen Hügel und unter jedem grünen Baume hast du dich als Buhlerin preisgegeben.

Ich dagegen hatte dich als auserlesenen Weinstock gepflanzt, als durchaus echten Sprößling; wie bist du mir denn verwandelt und entartet, du fremder Weinstock?

Wenn du dich gleich mit Laugensalz wüschest und viel Seife brauchtest, so bleibst du doch befleckt von deiner Schuld vor mir, spricht Gott, der Herr.

(Richter 2,10-15; Jesaja 43,22-28)

Wie kannst du sagen: Ich bin nicht befleckt, ich bin nicht den Baalen nachgewandelt? Schaue auf deinen Wandel im Tale, erkenne, was du getan! Du warst wie ein leichtfertiger Renner, der auf seinen Wegen hin und her läuft.

Eine Wildeselin, an die Wüste gewöhnt, in ihrer Lustbegier zieht sie den Atem ihrer Wollust ein; niemand vermag sie davon abzubringen, alle, die sie suchen, dürfen sich nicht abmüden, in ihrer Monatszeit finden sie dieselbe.

Wahre deinen Fuß vor Entblößung und deine Kehle vor Durst! Doch du sprichst: Ich kann es nicht lassen, ich kann nimmermehr folgen, denn ich liebe fremde Buhler und will ihnen nachgehen.

Wie ein Dieb beschämt ist, wenn er ergriffen wird, so ist das Haus Israel beschämt, das Volk samt seinen Königen, Fürsten, Priestern und Propheten;

sie, die zum Holze sprechen: Mein Vater bist du! Und zum Steine: Du hast mich geboren! Denn den Rücken haben sie mir zugewendet und nicht das Angesicht. Aber wenn sie in Drangsal sind, sprechen sie: Auf und errette uns!

Wo sind denn deine Götter, die du dir gemacht hast? Mögen sie aufstehen und dich retten zur Zeit deiner Drangsal; denn so zahlreich deine Städte sind, so viele Götter hattest du, o Juda!

Was wollt ihr noch mit mir rechten? Ihr alle habt mich verlassen, spricht der Herr.

Vergeblich habe ich eure Söhne geschlagen, sie nahmen nicht Zucht an; euer Schwert fraß eure Propheten, einem reißenden Löwen gleich

ist euer Geschlecht. Achtet auf das Wort des Herrn: War ich wohl für Israel eine Wüste oder ein Land, das seine Früchte verzögert? Warum spricht denn mein Volk: Wir haben uns entfernt, wir wollen nicht mehr zu dir kommen?

Vergißt wohl eine Jungfrau ihres Geschmeides oder eine Braut ihres Gürtels? doch mein Volk hat meiner vergessen unzählige Tage!

Was bemühst du dich, deinen Wandel zu beschönigen, um Liebe zu suchen, du, welche ihre boshaften Wege noch andere lehrte?

Selbst an den Säumen deiner Gewande findet sich das Herzblut der Armen und Unschuldigen; nicht in Gruben habe ich sie gefunden, sondern an allen Orten, die ich soeben genannt habe.

Und doch sprichst du: „Ich bin ohne Sünde und unschuldig, möge sich deshalb dein Zorn von mir wenden!“ Siehe, ich werde mit dir ins Gericht gehen, dass du sagst: Ich habe nicht gesündigt!

Wie sehr bist du nichtswürdig geworden, indem du deine alten Wege wieder einschlugst! Auch an Ägypten wirst du zuschanden werden, wie du an Assur zuschanden geworden bist.

Denn auch von jenem wirst du weggehen, die Hände über den Kopf zusammenschlagend; denn der Herr zerbricht die Stütze, auf die du dein Vertrauen setzest, und es wird dir mit derselben nichts gelingen.
