- Kapitel 8 -

At that time, saith the Lord , they shall bring out the bones of the kings of Judah, and the bones of his princes, and the bones of the priests, and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, out of their graves:

And they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

And death shall be chosen rather than life by all the residue of them that remain of this evil family, which remain in all the places whither I have driven them, saith the Lord of hosts.

Moreover thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord ; Shall they fall, and not arise? shall he turn away, and not return?

Why then is this people of Jerusalem slidden back by a perpetual backsliding? they hold fast deceit, they refuse to return.

I hearkened and heard, but they spake not aright: no man repented him of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? every one turned to his course, as the horse rusheth into the battle.

Yea, the stork in the heaven knoweth her appointed times; and the turtle and the crane and the swallow observe the time of their coming; but my people know not the judgment of the Lord .

How do ye say, We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us? Lo, certainly in vain made he it; the pen of the scribes is in vain.(a)

The wise men are ashamed, they are dismayed and taken: lo, they have rejected the word of the Lord ; and what wisdom is in them?(b)

Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the Lord .(d)

I will surely consume them, saith the Lord : there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

The People Respond

Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the Lord our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the Lord .(e)

We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble!

The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.(f)

For, behold, I will send serpents, cockatrices, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, saith the Lord .

Jeremiah Weeps for His People

When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.(g)

Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the Lord in Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images, and with strange vanities?(h)

The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved.

For the hurt of the daughter of my people am I hurt; I am black; astonishment hath taken hold on me.

Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?(i)

Zu jener Zeit, spricht der Herr, wird man die Gebeine der Könige von Juda und die Gebeine seiner Fürsten, die Gebeine der Priester und die Gebeine der Propheten und die Gebeine der Bewohner von Jerusalem aus ihren Gräbern herauswerfen

und sie hinstreuen vor der Sonne und dem Monde und dem ganzen Himmelsheere, welche sie geliebt und denen sie gedient, denen sie nachgewandelt sind und die sie aufgesucht und angebetet haben; nicht sollen sie wieder aufgesammelt und nicht begraben werden, sondern sollen zu Dünger auf der Oberfläche der Erde werden.

Und alle, welche noch übrig bleiben werden von diesem ganz bösen Geschlecht an allen Orten der Verlassenheit, an die ich sie verstoße, werden lieber sterben wollen als am Leben bleiben, spricht der Herr der Heerscharen.

Die Gefahr der falschen Lehre

So sprich denn zu ihnen: So spricht der Herr: Wird der, welcher fällt, nicht wieder aufstehen? Oder der, welcher sich abwendet, sich nicht wieder umwenden?

Warum hat sich denn dies Volk zu Jerusalem abgewendet und verharrt in der Abkehr? Sie halten fest an der Lüge und wollen nicht umkehren.

Ich habe aufgemerkt und gelauscht; niemand redet, was gut ist, keiner tut Buße über seine Sünde, dass er spräche: Was habe ich getan? Alle wenden sich ihrem Laufe zu, einem Rosse gleich, das ungestüm in den Kampf stürzt.

Der Reiher am Himmel kennt seine Zeit, die Turteltaube, die Schwalbe und der Storch halten die Zeit ihres Kommens ein, aber mein Volk kennt das Recht des Herrn nicht.

Wie könnt ihr sagen: Wir sind weise und haben das Gesetz des Herrn? Wahrlich, zur Lüge hat es der Lügengriffe der Schriftgelehrten gemacht.

Die Weisen werden beschämt, erschreckt und gefangen werden, denn sie haben das Wort des Herrn verworfen und es ist keine Weisheit in ihnen.

Darum werde ich ihre Frauen den Fremden geben und ihre Äcker andern nach ihnen, denn vom Geringsten bis zum Größten sind alle der Habsucht ergeben, vom Propheten bis zum Priester üben alle Lüge.

Sie wollten den Schaden der Tochter meines Volkes schandvoll heilen, indem sie sprachen: Friede, Friede! wo doch kein Friede war.

Sie wurden zuschanden, weil sie Greuel verübt, doch sie wurden nicht schamrot, vielmehr verstanden sie nicht sich zu schämen; darum werden sie unter den Fallenden fallen und zur Zeit ihrer Heimsuchung werden sie zu Boden stürzen, spricht der Herr.

Alle will ich zusammen wegraffen, spricht der Herr, keine Traube soll an dem Weinstocke und keine Feige an dem Feigenbaume bleiben, ja, auch die Blätter sollen abfallen und ich gebe ihnen, was eingedrungen ist.

Warum sitzen wir denn noch still? Sammelt euch und lasset uns in die feste Stadt ziehen und dort in Stille weilen! Denn der Herr, unser Gott, hat uns verstummen lassen und hat uns Gallentrank zu trinken gegeben, weil wir wider den Herrn gesündigt haben.

Wir hofften auf Frieden und es kam nichts Gutes, auf die Zeit der Heilung und siehe, Schrecken kam.

Von Dan her wird das Schnauben seiner Rosse vernommen, von dem lauten Wiehern seiner Streitrosse erbebt das ganze Land; sie kommen und verschlingen das Land und dessen Fülle, die Stadt und ihre Bewohner.

Denn siehe, ich werde Schlangen, Basilisken unter euch senden, gegen welche es keine Beschwörung gibt, und diese werden euch beißen, spricht der Herr.

Der Prophet trauert um das Volk

Ein Schmerz kommt mir über den andern, mein Herz trauert in mir!

Siehe, laut ertönt das Klagegeschrei der Tochter meines Volkes aus fernem Lande: „ Ist denn der Herr nicht in Sion oder ist sein König nicht in ihm?“ Warum haben sie mich denn durch ihre geschnitzten Bilder und durch fremde Nichtigkeiten zum Zorne gereizt?

Vorüber ist die Ernte, zu Ende ist der Sommer und uns ist keine Hilfe geworden!

Tief bin ich betrübt über das große Elend der Tochter meines Volkes, ich gehe voll Trauer einher, Entsetzen hat mich ergriffen.

Ist denn kein Balsam mehr in Galaad? oder ist kein Arzt mehr dort? Warum ward die Wunde der Tochter meines Volkes nicht verbunden?
