(Numbers 26:1–4)

And the Lord spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tabernacle of the congregation, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, after their families, by the house of their fathers, with the number of their names, every male by their polls;

From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel: thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.

And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of the house of his fathers.

The Leaders of the Tribes

And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur.

Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

Of Judah; Nahshon the son of Amminadab.

Of Issachar; Nethaneel the son of Zuar.

Of Zebulun; Eliab the son of Helon.

Of the children of Joseph: of Ephraim; Elishama the son of Ammihud: of Manasseh; Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

Of Benjamin; Abidan the son of Gideoni.

Of Dan; Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.

Of Asher; Pagiel the son of Ocran.

Of Gad; Eliasaph the son of Deuel.(a)

Of Naphtali; Ahira the son of Enan.

These were the renowned of the congregation, princes of the tribes of their fathers, heads of thousands in Israel.

The Number of Every Tribe

And Moses and Aaron took these men which are expressed by their names:

And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month, and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls.

As the Lord commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai.

And the children of Reuben, Israel’s eldest son, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Simeon, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, those that were numbered of them, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred.

Of the children of Gad, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty.

Of the children of Judah, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred.

Of the children of Issachar, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Zebulun, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Joseph, namely, of the children of Ephraim, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Manasseh, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred.

Of the children of Benjamin, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred.

Of the children of Dan, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred.

Of the children of Asher, by their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred.

Of the children of Naphtali, throughout their generations, after their families, by the house of their fathers, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war;

Those that were numbered of them, even of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred.

These are those that were numbered, which Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: each one was for the house of his fathers.

So were all those that were numbered of the children of Israel, by the house of their fathers, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel;

Even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty.

The Exemption of the Levites

But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.

For the Lord had spoken unto Moses, saying,

Only thou shalt not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:

But thou shalt appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.

And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down: and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death.

And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts.

But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of testimony.

And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.

Und der Herr redete zu Moses in der Wüste Sinai im Zelte des Bundes, am ersten Tage des zweiten Monats, im zweiten Jahre nach ihrem Auszuge aus Ägypten, und sprach:

Nehmet die Gesamtheit der ganzen Gemeinde der Söhne Israels nach Geschlechtern und Stammhäusern, samt den einzelnen Namen auf, alles, was männlichen Geschlechtes ist.

von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alle streitbaren Männer in Israel, und zählet sie Schar für Schar ab, du und Aaron.

Und die Fürsten der Stämme und der Stammhäuser nach ihren Geschlechtern sollen euch beistehen.

Dies sind die Namen derselben: Von Ruben: Elisur, der Sohn Sedeurs;

von Simeon: Salamiel, der Sohn Surisaddais;

von Juda: Nahasson, der Sohn Aminadabs;

von Issachar: Nathanael, der Sohn Suars;

von Zabulon: Eliab, der Sohn Helons;

von den Söhnen Josephs aber, von Ephraim: Elisama, der Sohn Ammiuds; von Manasse: Gamaliel, der Sohn Phadassurs;

von Benjamin: Abidan, der Sohn Gedeons;

von Dan: Ahiezer, der Sohn Ammisaddais;

von Aser: Phegiel, der Sohn Ochrans;

von Gad: Eliasaph, der Sohn Duels;

von Nephthali: Ahira, der Sohn Enans.

Das sind die hochedlen Fürsten der Gemeinde, nach ihren Stämmen und Geschlechtern, und die Häupter des Heeres Israels;

diese beriefen Moses und Aaron samt der ganzen Menge des Volkes;

und sie versammelten sich am ersten Tage des zweiten Monats und verzeichneten sie nach ihren Geschlechtern, und Häusern, und Familien, und Köpfen, und den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber,

wie der Herr dem Moses geboten hatte. So wurden sie denn in der Wüste Sinai gezählt.

Von Ruben, dem Erstgebornen Israels, waren nach ihren Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern, und nach den Namen der einzelnen Köpfe, alle, die männlich, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, fähig waren, zum Streite auszuziehen,

sechsundvierzigtausend fünfhundert.

Von den Söhnen Simeons wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, und nach einzelnen Namen und Köpfen, alle aufgezeichnet, die männlich, von zwanzig Jahren und darüber, fähig zum Kampfe auszuziehen,

neunundfünfzigtausend dreihundert.

Von den Söhnen Gads wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen aufgezeichnet, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, alle, die zum Kampfe ausziehen konnten,

fünfundvierzigtausend sechshundert und fünfzig.

Von den Söhnen Judas wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach einzelnen Namen von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die zum Kampfe ausziehen konnten, insgesamt

vierundsiebzigtausend sechshundert verzeichnet.

Von den Söhnen Issachars wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

vierundfünfzigtausend vierhundert verzeichnet.

Von den Söhnen Zabulons wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

siebenundfünfzigtausend vierhundert.

Von den Söhnen Josephs, den Söhnen Ephraims, wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

vierzigtausend fünfhundert.

Von den Söhnen Manasses ferner wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

zweiunddreißigtausend zweihundert.

Von den Söhnen Benjamins wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

fünfunddreißigtausend vierhundert.

Von den Söhnen Dans wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

zweiundsechzigtausend siebenhundert.

Von den Söhnen Asers wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

einundvierzigtausend fünfhundert.

Von den Söhnen Nephthalis wurden nach Geschlechtern, und Familien, und Häusern ihrer Geschlechter, nach den Namen der einzelnen, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solche, die fähig waren, zum Kampfe auszuziehen, insgesamt

dreiundfünfzigtausend vierhundert.

Diese sind es, welche Moses und Aaron, und die zwölf Fürsten Israels, Kopf für Kopf, nach den Häusern ihrer Geschlechter musterten.

Und die Gesamtzahl der Söhne Israels, nach ihren Häusern und Familien, von zwanzig Jahren an und darüber, solcher, die zum Kampfe ausziehen konnten, belief sich auf

sechshundert dreitausend fünfhundert und fünfzig.

Die Leviten aber wurden nicht nach ihrem Stamme und ihren Familien mit ihnen gemustert.

Und der Herr redete zu Moses und sprach:

Den Stamm Levi mustere nicht und füge ihre Zahl nicht zu der der Söhne Israels hinzu,

sondern setze sie über das Zelt des Zeugnisses, und alle seine Geräte, und alles, was zum heiligen Dienste gehört. Sie sollen das Zelt und all seine Gerätschaften tragen, und sie sollen den Dienst daselbst tun und sich rings um das Zelt lagern.

Wenn aufgebrochen werden soll, sollen die Leviten das Zelt abbrechen, wenn gerastet werden soll, es aufrichten; wenn irgendein anderer sich naht, soll er getötet werden.

Die Söhne Israels aber sollen sich ein jeder bei seiner Schar und bei den Zügen seines Heerhaufens lagern.

Die Leviten aber sollen sich rings um das Zelt lagern, damit nicht ein Zorngericht über die Gemeinde der Söhne Israels komme, und sie sollen der Hut bei dem Zelte des Zeugnisses warten.

Die Söhne Israels taten also nach allem, was der Herr dem Moses geboten hatte.
