- Kapitel 21 -

And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners.

And Israel vowed a vow unto the Lord , and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

And the Lord hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.(a)

The Bronze Serpent

And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.(b)

And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread.

And the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord , and against thee; pray unto the Lord , that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live.

And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

The Journey to Moab

And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth.

And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije–abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.(c)

From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared.

From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the Lord , What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,(d)

And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.(e)

And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:(f)

The princes digged the well, the nobles of the people digged it, by the direction of the lawgiver, with their staves. And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah:

And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.(h)

The Defeat of Sihon

(Deuteronomy 2:24–37)

And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders.

And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.(k)

For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon.

Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared:

For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon.

Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites.

We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.

The Defeat of Og

(Deuteronomy 3:1–11)

Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites.

And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

And the Lord said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

Kanaaniter bei Hormah besiegt

Als Arad, der König der Chananiter, der gegen Süden wohnte, dies vernahm, dass nämlich Israel auf dem Wege der Kundschafter herangekommen sei, kämpfte er gegen Israel, und blieb Sieger, und führte von ihm Beute hinweg.

Da verband sich Israel dem Herrn durch ein Gelübde und sprach: Wenn du dies Volk in meine Hand gibst, werde ich seine Städte zerstören.

Und der Herr erhörte das Flehen Israels und übergab ihnen die Chananiter, und Israel erschlug sie, und zerstörte ihre Städte, und nannte den Namen dieses Ortes Horma, das ist Bannung.

Die bronzene Schlange

Dann aber brachen sie von dem Berge Hor auf und zogen weiter auf der Straße, welche zum roten Meere führt, um das Land Edom zu umgehen. Da ward das Volk mißmutig über den Zug und die Beschwerden,

und redete wider Gott und Moses, und sprach: Warum hast du uns aus Ägypten weggeführt, damit wir in der Wüste sterben? Brot fehlt, Wasser ist nicht da, und diese elende Speise ekelt uns bereits an.

Deswegen sandte der Herr Feuerschlangen unter das Volk. Als sie von diesen gebissen wurden und sehr viele von ihnen starben,

kamen sie zu Moses und sprachen: Wir haben gesündigt, dass wir wider den Herrn und dich geredet haben; bete, dass er die Schlangen von uns nehme. Da betete Moses für das Volk.

Und der Herr sprach zu ihm: Mache eine eherne Schlange und richte sie zum Zeichen auf; wer gebissen ist und sie anblickt, soll am Leben bleiben.

Also machte Moses eine eherne Schlange und richtete sie zum Zeichen auf; blickten die, welche gebissen waren, sie an, so wurden sie geheilt.

Vom Berg Hor nach Moab

Hierauf brachen die Söhne Israels auf und lagerten sich in Oboth.

Von dort zogen sie weiter und lagerten sich in Jeabarim, in der Wüste, welche ostwärts gegen Moab hin liegt.

Von da an aufbrechend, kamen sie an den Bach Zared.

Diesen verließen sie und lagerten sich dem Arnon gegenüber, der in der Wüste ist und am Gebiete der Amorrhiter dahinfließt. Denn der Arnon bildet die Grenze von Moab und scheidet die Moabiter und Amorrhiter.

Daher heißt es im Buche der Kriege des Herrn: Wie er am roten Meere getan, so wird er auch an den Tälern des Arnon tun.

Die Felsen der Gießbäche neigten sich, um zu ruhen in Ar, sich zu lehnen an die Grenzen der Moabiter.

Dort entsprang der Brunnquell, von dem der Herr zu Moses gesprochen: Versammle das Volk, so will ich ihm Wasser geben.

Damals sang Israel dieses Lied: Steige herauf, o Brunnquell! Zusammen sangen sie:

Brunnquell, von Fürsten gegraben, den die Heerführer durch den Gesetzgeber und mit ihren Stäben bereitet. Aus der Wüste zogen sie nach Matthana;

von Matthana nach Nahaliel; von Nahaliel nach Bamoth;

und von Bamoth weiter in ein Tal im Lande Moab, an der Höhe des Phasga, der auf die Wüste herabsieht.

König Sihon besiegt

(5. Mose 2,24-37)

Israel aber sandte Boten zu Sehon, dem Könige der Amorrhiter, und sprach:

Ich bitte, lass mich durch dein Land ziehen; wir werden nicht in die Äcker und Weinberge abbiegen, nicht Wasser aus den Brunnen trinken; auf der Heerstraße werden wir bleiben, so lange wir durch dein Gebiet ziehen.

Er aber wollte nicht gestatten, dass Israel durch sein Gebiet zog, sondern sammelte sein Heer, und zog ihm in die Wüste entgegen, und kam nach Jasa, und kämpfte mit Israel.

Israel aber schlug ihn mit der Schärfe des Schwertes und nahm sein Land vom Arnon bis hin an den Jebok und bis zu den Söhnen Ammons ein; denn die Grenzen der Ammoniter waren durch starke Besatzungen geschützt.

So nahm denn Israel alle seine Städte ein und schlug seine Wohnung in den Städten der Amorrhiter auf, in Hesebon nämlich und den dazu gehörigen Orten.

Hesebon war die Stadt Sehons, des Königs der Amorrhiter, der gegen den König von Moab gekämpft und alles Land, das unter seiner Herrschaft gestanden, bis zum Arnon weggenommen hatte.

Darum heißt es im Volksliede: Kommet nach Hesebon, auferbaut und befestigt werde die Stadt Sehons!

Ein Feuer ging aus von Hesebon, eine Flamme von der Stadt Sehons, und verzehrte Ar, die Stadt der Moabiter, und die, welche auf den Höhen des Arnon wohnten.

Wehe dir Moab, du bist verloren, Volk des Chamos! Er ließ seine Söhne die Flucht ergreifen, seine Töchter von Sehon, dem Könige der Amorrhiter, gefangen nehmen.

Ihr Joch ist abgeworfen von Hesebon bis Dibon, ermattet kamen sie nach Nophe und bis nach Medaba.

(5. Mose 3,1-11)

Israel also ließ sich im Lande der Amorrhiter nieder.

Und Moses sandte Männer aus, um Jazer auszukundschaften; alsdann nahmen sie seine Flecken ein und überwältigten die Bewohner.

König Og besiegt

Hierauf wandten sie sich und zogen den Weg nach Basan hinauf. Da rückte ihnen Og, der König von Basan, mit seinem ganzen Volke entgegen, um in Edrai den Kampf aufzunehmen.

Und der Herr sprach zu Moses: Fürchte dich nicht vor ihm, denn ich habe ihn, und sein ganzes Volk, und sein Land in deine Hand gegeben; und du sollst mit ihm verfahren, wie du mit Sehon, dem Könige der Amorrhiter, der in Hesebon wohnte, verfahren bist.

Da schlugen sie auch ihn samt seinen Söhnen und sein ganzes Volk bis zur Vernichtung, und nahmen sein Land in Besitz.
