- Kapitel 1 -

(Jeremiah 49:7–22)

The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord God concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the Lord , and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the Lord .

If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?(a)

How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.(b)

Shall I not in that day, saith the Lord , even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?

And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.(e)

But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.(f)

Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;(g)

Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.(h)

The Deliverance of Israel

For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.(i)

But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.(j)

And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.

And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.(l)

And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s .

Das kommende Gericht über Edom

(Jeremia 49,7-22)

Gesicht des Abdias. So spricht der Herr, Gott, über Edom: Eine Kunde haben wir vom Herrn vernommen und einen Boten hat er unter die Völker entsendet: Auf, lasset uns zusammen wider Edom uns zum Kampfe erheben!

Siehe, ich habe dich klein gemacht unter den Völkern, verachtet bist du gar sehr.

In Vermessenheit deines Herzens hast du dich überhoben, weil du in Felsenklüften wohnst und deinen Sitz hoch baust, und du sprichst in deinem Herzen: Wer könnte mich zur Erde niederzwingen?

Aber wärest du auch hoch erhoben gleich dem Adler und setztest du dein Nest zwischen die Sterne, so werde ich dich doch von da niederzwingen, spricht der Herr.

Wenn Diebe zu dir eindrängen, wenn Räuber des Nachts, wie würdest du verstummen! Würden sie nicht rauben, bis es ihnen genügt? Wenn Weinleser über dich kämen, würden sie dir nicht doch eine Traube übriglassen?

Wie ist aber Esau durchforscht, seine verborgensten Orte durchsucht!

Bis zu deiner Grenze haben sie dich getrieben; alle, die deine Bundesgenossen waren, spotteten dein, die deine Freunde waren, haben dich überwältigt; deine früheren Tischgenossen legen dir Hinterhalt; keine Einsicht ist in ihm!

Werde ich an jenem Tage, spricht der Herr, nicht die Weisen aus Edom vertilgen und die Einsicht aus dem Gebirge Esau?

Deine Helden aus dem Lande gegen Mittag sollen zagen, dass alle vom Gebirge Esau vernichtet werden.

Edom misshandelte seinen Bruder

Ob des Mordens, ob der Gewalttat gegen deinen Bruder Jakob wird dich Schande bedecken und du wirst auf immer ausgerottet werden.

Am Tage, da du ihm entgegentratest, da Fremde sein Heer gefangen nahmen und Ausländer in seine Tore eindrangen und über Jerusalem das Los warfen, da warst auch du wie einer von ihnen.

Aber sieh nicht schadenfroh auf den Tag deines Bruders, den Tag seiner Wegführung, und freue dich nicht über die Kinder Juda am Tage ihres Verderbens und überhebe deinen Mund nicht am Tage der Bedrängnis;

auch dringe nicht in die Tore meines Volkes am Tage ihres Untergangs, schaue nicht schadenfroh auf sein Unglück am Tage seiner Not, ziehe nicht aus wider sein Heer am Tage seiner Drangsal,

stelle dich nicht auf an den Scheidewegen, seine Flüchtlinge niederzumachen, und schließe seine Übriggebliebenen am Tage der Drangsal nicht ein.

Denn nahe ist der Tag des Herrn über alle Völker; wie du gehandelt, also wird dir geschehen, den er wird Vergeltung auf dein Haupt zurückfallen lassen.

Denn wie ihr auf meinen heiligen Berge getrunken, so werden alle Völker unablässig trinken, ja trinken und schlürfen, und werden sein, als wären sie nicht.

Israels endgültiger Triumph

Auf dem Berge Sion aber soll eine Zuflucht sein, er soll heilig sein und das Haus Jakob wird in Besitz nehmen, die es besessen.

Das Haus Jakob wird ein Feuer werden, das Haus Joseph Flamme und das Haus Esau Stoppeln; jene werden sie anzünden und verzehren, so dass vom Hause Esau kein Überrest bleibt, denn der Herr hat gesprochen.

Die Bewohner des Landes gegen Mittag werden das Gebirge Esau erben und die in den Ebenen die Philister, sie werden das Gefilde von Ephraim in Besitz nehmen und das Gefilde Samarias und Benjamin wird Galaad erhalten.

Und die Weggeführten dieser Schar der Söhne Israel werden alle Orte der Kanaaniter bis nach Sarepta hin in Besitz nehmen und die von Jerusalem Weggeführten; die in Bosphorus sind, werden die Städte gegen Mittag in Besitz nehmen.

Und Retter werden auf den Berg Sion hinaufziehen, um das Gebirge Esau zu richten, und das Königtum wird des Herrn sein.
