- Kapitel 18 -

The words of the wise and the foolish

1
Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.(a)
2
A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.
3
When the wicked cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with ignominy reproach.
4
The words of a man’s mouth are as deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom as a flowing brook.
5
It is not good to accept the person of the wicked, to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

A fool’s lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.
7
A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.

The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.(b) (c) (d)

He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.(e)

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and as an high wall in his own conceit.

Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honour is humility.
13
He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.(f)
14
The spirit of a man will sustain his infirmity; but a wounded spirit who can bear?
15
The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.
16
A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.
17
He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbour cometh and searcheth him.
18
The lot causeth contentions to cease, and parteth between the mighty.
19
A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle.
20
A man’s belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled.
21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
22
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord .
23
The poor useth intreaties; but the rich answereth roughly.
24
A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

Die Worte der Weisen und der Toren

Wer sich von einem Freunde trennen will, sucht Anlässe; er ist allezeit tadelnswert.

Der Tor nimmt die Worte der Klugheit nicht an, wenn du nicht das sagst, was nach seinem Herzen ist.

Wenn der Gottlose tief in Sünden versunken ist, achtet er es gering; aber es folgt ihm Schmach und Schande.

Tiefes Wasser sind die Worte aus eines Mannes Munde und ein überströmender Fluss ist der Quell der Weisheit.

Es ist nicht gut, für den Bösen Partei zu nehmen, um von der Wahrheit im Gerichte abzuweichen.

Die Lippen des Toren mischen sich in Zank und sein Mund weckt Hader.

Der Mund des Toren ist sein Verderbnis und seine Lippen sind der Untergang für sein Leben.

Die Worte eines Zweizüngigen scheinen arglos, aber sie dringen bis in das Innerste des Leibes. Die Furcht schlägt den Trägen nieder und verweichlichte Seelen leiden Hunger.

Wer verweichlicht und lässig ist in seiner Arbeit, ist ein Bruder dessen, der, was er erarbeitet, verschwendet.

Der Name des Herrn ist ein fester Turm, zu ihm eilt der Gerechte und wird erhöht.

Des reichen Wohlstand ist für ihn eine feste Stadt und wie eine starke Mauer, die ihn umgibt.

Das Herz des Menschen erhebt sich, bevor es ins Verderben stürzt; und bevor er geehrt wird, demütigt er sich.

Wer Antwort gibt, ehe er noch hört, zeigt, dass er ein Tor ist und Beschämung verdient.

Der Geist des Mannes erträgt seine Schwäche; wer aber kann den Geist, der zum Zorne geneigt ist, ertragen?

Ein kluges Herz erwirbt Erkenntnis und das Ohr der Weisen ist nach Belehrung begierig.

Geschenke schaffen dem Menschen Raum und eröffnen ihn den Zutritt zu den Fürsten.

Der Gerechte beschuldigt sich selbst am ersten; kommt sein Freund, so wird er ihn ausforschen.

Streitigkeiten schlichtet das Los und selbst zwischen Mächtigen entscheidet es.

Ein Bruder, dem der andere zu Hilfe kommt, ist wie eine feste Stadt und Gerichte sind wie die Riegel an den Städten.

Von der Frucht seines Mundes wird des Mannes Leib erfüllt und das Erträgnis seiner Lippen sättigt ihn.

Tod und Leben sind in der Gewalt der Zunge; wer sie liebt, wird ihre Frucht genießen.

Wer ein gutes Weib findet, findet Glück und wird Freude erlangen von dem Herrn. Wer ein gutes Weib verstößt, treibt das Glück von sich; wer aber eine Ehebrecherin behält, ist ein Tor und ein Gottloser.

Mit flehenden Worten redet der Arme, aber der Reiche antwortet mit Härte.

Ein angenehmer Gesellschafter ist mehr geliebt als ein Bruder.
