- Kapitel 19 -

Wealth and poverty

Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool.

Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.

The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the Lord .

Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape.(a)

Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.(b)

All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good.(c)

A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.

Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes.

The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.(d)

The king’s wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord .

Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord ; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.(e)

Advice and counsel

Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.(f)

A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again.(g)

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord , that shall stand.

The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge.(h)

He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.

Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity.(i)

Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools.

Reichtum und Armut

Besser ist der Arme, der in seiner Unschuld wandelt, als der Reiche, der seine Lippen verzieht und ein Tor ist.

Wo keine Einsicht in der Seele ist, ist nichts Gutes, und wessen Füße hastig sind, der stößt an.

Die Torheit des Menschen bringt seine Füße zum Falle und sein Herz ergrimmt wider Gott.

Reichtum mehrt der Freunde Zahl gar sehr; von dem Armen trennen sich auch die, welche er zuvor gehabt.

Ein falscher Zeuge bleibt nicht ungestraft und wer Lügen redet, entrinnt nicht.

Viele ehren den Mächtigen um seiner Stellung willen.

Den Armen hassen seine Brüder und auch seine Freunde entfernen sich von ihm. Wer nur Worten nachgeht, wird nichts erhalten;

wer aber Einsicht besitzt, liebt sein Leben, und wer die Klugheit bewahrt, findet Gutes.

Ein falscher Zeuge bleibt nicht ungestraft und wer Lügen redet, geht zugrunde.

Dem Toren ziemt Wohlleben nicht noch dem Knechte, über Fürsten zu herrschen.

Des Menschen Einsicht erkennt man an seiner Geduld und sein Ruhm ist es, über Unrecht hinwegzugehen.

Wie des Löwen Gebrüll, so ist der Zorn des Königs, und wie der Tau auf dem Grase, so seine Freundlichkeit.

Des Vaters Schmerz ist ein törichter Sohn und ein beständig durchträufendes Dach ein zänkisches Weib.

Haus und Reichtum werden von den Eltern zuteil, ein kluges Weib aber kommt als besondere Gabe von dem Herrn.

Faulheit lässt in Schlafsucht fallen und eine lässige Seele muss darben.

Wer das Gebot hält, bewahrt sein Leben; wer aber auf seinen Wandel nicht acht hat, wird des Todes sein.

Wer sich des Armen erbarmt, gibt dem Herrn ein Darlehen auf Wucher; er wird es ihm wieder vergelten.

Beratung und Ratschläge

Züchtige deinen Sohn, verliere nicht die Hoffnung; doch begehre nicht, dass er umkomme.

Wer keine Geduld hat, wird Schaden leiden; und nimmt er etwas mit Gewalt, so wird der Schaden doppelt.

Höre auf Rat und nimm Zucht an, damit du in Zukunft weise werdest.

Viele Gedanken sind in des Menschen Herzen, der Wille des Herrn aber wird Bestand haben.

Ein armer Mensch ist barmherzig und besser ist ein Armer als ein Lügner.

Die Furcht des Herrn führt zum Leben und sie wird im Überfluss wohnen, von keinem Übel heimgesucht.

Der Faule birgt seine Hand unter der Achsel und bringt sie nicht an seinen Mund.

Wenn man einen Spötter geißelt, so wird der Tor weiser; gibst du aber dem Weisen einen Verweis, so nimmt er die Zucht an.

Wer seinen Vater betrübt und seine Mutter verstößt, ist ein schändlicher und unseliger Mensch.

Lass nicht ab, mein Sohn! Auf Zucht zu hören und lass dir die Sprüche der Weisheit nicht unbekannt sein.

Ein ungerechter Zeuge verhöhnt das Recht und der Mund der Gottlosen verschlingt das Unrecht.

Den Spöttern sind Strafgerichte bereitet und Hammerschläge dem Leibe der Toren.
