Authorship. Purpose

(Proverbs 9:1-12)

The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;(a)

To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.(b)

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.(c)

Main theme. Warnings against violence

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.(d)

My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.(e)

My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.(f)

And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

Warning against neglecting wisdom

Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:(g)

She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord :

They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.

For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.(h)

But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

(Sprüche 9,1-12)

Sprüche Salomons, des Sohnes Davids, des Königs von Israel:

zu erkennen Weisheit und Zucht;

zu verstehen die Worte der Klugheit und zu erlangen die Unterweisung in der Lehre, Gerechtigkeit, Recht und Billigkeit;

dass den Unerfahrenen Klugheit zuteil werde, dem Jünglinge Wissenschaft und Verstand.

Hört sie der Weise, so wird er noch weiser, und der Verständige wird sich die Kunst der Leitung zu eigen machen.

Er wird acht haben auf den Spruch und die Auslegung, auf die Worte der Weisen und ihre Rätsel.

Hauptthema. Warnungen vor Gewalt

Die Furcht des Herrn ist der Anfang der Weisheit, Weisheit und Lehre verachten die Toren.

Höre, mein Sohn! auf die Zucht deines Vaters und lass nicht von der Lehre deiner Mutter,

damit Zierde deinem Haupte zuteil werde und eine Kette deinem Halse.

Mein Sohn, wenn dich die Sünder locken, so folge ihnen nicht!

Wenn sie sagen: Komm mit uns! lass uns auf Blut lauern, dem Unschuldigen ohne Ursache heimlich nachstellen;

wir wollen ihn verschlingen wie die Unterwelt den Lebenden. und den Schuldlosen wie einen, der in die Grube hinabfährt.

Allerlei kostbare Habe wollen wir erlangen, unsere Häuser mit Raub füllen.

Wirf das Los mit uns, einen Beutel wollen wir alle führen!

Mein Sohn! gehe nicht mit ihnen, halte deinen Fuß zurück von ihren Pfaden.

Denn ihre Füße laufen dem Bösen nach und eilen, Blut zu vergießen.

Doch umsonst spannt man das Netz vor den Augen der Vögel aus.

Jene lauern ihrem eigenen Blute auf und machen Anschläge wider ihr eigenes Leben.

So sind die Pfade aller, die auf Gewinn ausgehen; sie rauben den Besitzern das Leben.

Warnung vor Vernachlässigung der Weisheit

Die Weisheit ruft laut auf der Straße, lässt ihre Stimme auf den freien Plätzen erschallen.

An der Spitze der Volkshaufen ruft sie, an den Eingängen der Stadttore redet sie ihre Worte und spricht:

Wie lange wollt ihr Einfältigen die Einfalt lieben? Und die Toren das verlangen, was ihnen schädlich ist, und die Unweisen die Einsicht hassen?

Kehret um auf meine Zurechtweisung! Sehet, ich will euch meinen Geist kundtun und euch meine Worte wissen lassen.

Weil ich rief und ihr euch weigertet, ich meine Hand ausstreckte und niemand darauf achtete,

weil ihr all mein Raten geringschätztet und meine Strafreden in den Wind schluget,

so werde ich auch bei euerm Untergange lachen und werde spotten, wenn euch begegnet, was ihr fürchtetet.

Wenn plötzlich das Unglück hereinbricht und der Untergang wie ein Sturm heranstürzt, wenn Trübsal und Angst über euch kommen,

alsdann werden sie mich anrufen, aber ich werde nicht darauf hören, werden frühe aufstehen, aber mich nicht finden;

weil sie die Zucht gehasst und die Furcht des Herrn nicht erwählt haben,

von meinem Rate nichts wissen wollten und alle meine Strafreden schmähten.

So werden sie denn die Früchte ihres Wandels kosten und an ihren eigenen Anschlägen sich sättigen.

Das Widerstreben wird sie, die Einfältigen, töten und das Glück der Toren sie zugrunde richten.

Wer aber auf mich hört, wohnt in Ruhe ohne Schrecken, genießt Fülle, ohne Unglück fürchten zu müssen.
