- Kapitel 9 -

And passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,

and His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?”

Jesus answered, “Neither this one sinned nor his parents, but that the works of God may be revealed in him;

it is necessary for Me to be working the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; night comes when no one is able to work:

when I am in the world, I AM [the] light of the world.”

Saying these things, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

“Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,” which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and washed, and came seeing;

the neighbors, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, “Is this not he who is sitting and begging?”

Others said, “This is he”; and others, “He is like to him”; he himself said, “I am [he].”

They said, therefore, to him, “How were your eyes opened?”

He answered and said, “A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight”;

they said, therefore, to him, “Where is that One?” He says, “I have not known.”

The Pharisees Investigate the Healing

They bring him who once [was] blind to the Pharisees,

and it was a Sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, “He put clay on my eyes, and I washed—and I see.”

Certain of the Pharisees therefore said, “This Man is not from God, because He does not keep the Sabbath”; others said, “How is a man—a sinful one—able to do such signs?” And there was a division among them.

They said to the blind man again, “You—what do you say of Him—that He opened your eyes?”

And he said, “He is a prophet.” The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and received sight, until they called the parents of him who received sight,

and they asked them, saying, “Is [this] your son, of whom you say that he was born blind? How then does he now see?”

His parents answered them and said, “We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

and how he now sees, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; he is of age, ask him; he himself will speak concerning himself.”

His parents said these things, because they were afraid of the Jews, for the Jews had already agreed together, that if anyone may confess Him—Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

because of this his parents said, “He is of age, ask him.”

They called, therefore, the man who was blind a second time, and they said to him, “Give glory to God, we have known that this Man is a sinner”;

he answered, therefore, and said, “If He is a sinner—I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.”

And they said to him again, “What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?”

He answered them, “I told you already, and you did not hear; why do you wish to hear [it] again? Do you also wish to become His disciples?”

They reviled him, therefore, and said, “You are His disciple, and we are Moses’ disciples;

we have known that God has spoken to Moses, but this One—we have not known where He is from.”

The man answered and said to them, “Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that you have not known where He is from, and He opened my eyes!

And we have known that God does not hear sinners, but if anyone may be a worshiper of God, and may do His will, He hears him;

from the age it was not heard that anyone opened eyes of one who has been born blind;

if this One were not from God, He were not able to do anything.”

They answered and said to him, “In sins you were born altogether, and you teach us?” And they cast him forth outside.

Spiritual Blindness

Jesus heard that they cast him forth outside, and having found him, He said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”

He answered and said, “Who is He, Lord, that I may believe in Him?”

And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen Him, and He who is speaking with you is He”;

and he said, “I believe, Lord,” and worshiped Him.

And Jesus said, “I came to this world for judgment, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.”

And those of the Pharisees who were with Him heard these things, and they said to Him, “Are we also blind?”

Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you were not having had sin, but now you say—We see, therefore your sin remains.”

Ein Mann, der blind geboren wurde, erhält das Augenlicht

Und als Jesus vorüberging, sah er einen Menschen, der von Geburt an blind war.

Da fragten ihn seine Jünger: Meister! wer hat gesündigt, dieser oder seine Eltern, dass er blind geboren wurde?

Jesus antwortete: Weder dieser hat gesündigt noch seine Eltern; sondern die Werke Gottes sollen an ihm offenbar werden.

Ich muss die Werke desjenigen wirken, der mich gesandt hat, solange es Tag ist; es kommt die Nacht, da niemand wirken kann.

So lange ich in der Welt bin, bin ich das Licht der Welt.

Als er dies gesagt hatte, spuckte er auf die Erde, machte aus dem Speichel einen Teig und strich den Teig auf die Augen desselben,

und sprach zu ihm: Gehe hin, und wasche dich in dem Teiche Siloe (das heißt der Gesandte). Da ging er hin, wusch sich, und kam sehend.

Die Nachbarn aber, und die ihn zuvor, weil er ein Bettler war, gesehen hatten, sprachen: Ist dies nicht derselbe, welcher dasaß und bettelte? Einige sagten: Er ist es!

Andere aber: Nein, sondern er sieht ihm ähnlich. Jener aber sprach: Ich bin es!

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Wie sind dir die Augen aufgetan worden?

Er antwortete: Jener Mann, welcher Jesus genannt wird, bereitete einen Teig, und bestrich meine Augen, und sprach zu mir: Gehe hin zu dem Teiche Siloe, und wasche dich! Da ging ich hin, wusch mich, und ich sehe.

Und sie sprachen zu ihm: Wo ist er? Er sprach: Ich weiß es nicht.

Die Pharisäer exkommunizieren den geheilten Mann

Da führten sie den, der blind gewesen, zu den Pharisäern.

Es war aber Sabbat, als Jesus den Teig bereitete, und ihm die Augen öffnete.

Wiederum also fragten ihn die Pharisäer, wie er sehend geworden sei. Er aber sagte zu ihnen: Er legte mir einen Teig auf die Augen, ich wusch mich, und ich sehe.

Hierauf sprachen einige von den Pharisäern: Dieser Mensch ist nicht von Gott, da er den Sabbat nicht hält. Andere aber sagten: Wie kann ein sündhafter Mensch diese Wunder tun? Und es war eine Spaltung unter ihnen.

Sie sprachen also abermals zu dem Blinden: Was sagst du von dem, der deine Augen aufgetan hat? Er aber sprach: Er ist ein Prophet!

Nun glaubten die Juden nicht von ihm, dass er blind gewesen und sehend geworden sei, bis sie die Eltern des Sehendgewordenen herbeiriefen.

Diese fragten sie, und sprachen: Ist dies euer Sohn, von welchem ihr saget, dass er blind geboren ist? Wie ist er denn jetzt sehend geworden?

Seine Eltern antworteten ihnen, und sprachen: Wir wissen, dass dieser unser Sohn ist, und dass er blind geboren ist;

wie er aber jetzt sehend geworden ist, wissen wir nicht; oder wer ihm die Augen aufgetan hat, wissen wir nicht. Fraget ihn selbst! Er ist alt genug, er mag selber von sich reden.

Dies sagten seine Eltern, weil sie sich vor den Juden fürchteten; denn die Juden hatten sich schon verabredet, jeden, der ihn als Christus bekennen würde, aus der Gemeinschaft auszuschließen.

Darum sprachen seine Eltern: Er ist alt genug, fraget ihn selbst!

Sie riefen also den Menschen, der blind gewesen, noch einmal, und sprachen zu ihm: Gib Gott die Ehre! Wir wissen, dass dieser Mensch ein Sünder ist.

Da sprach er zu ihnen: Ob er ein Sünder ist, weiß ich nicht; eines weiß ich, dass ich blind war, und nun sehe.

Da sprachen sie zu ihm: Was hat er dir getan? Wie hat er dir die Augen aufgetan?

Er antwortete ihnen: Ich habe es euch schon gesagt, und ihr habt es gehört; warum wollet ihr es noch einmal hören? Wollet etwa auch ihr seine Jünger werden?

Da fluchten sie ihm, und sprachen: Du magst sein Jünger sein, wir aber sind Moses Jünger.

Wir wissen, dass Gott zu Moses geredet hat; woher aber dieser ist, wissen wir nicht.

Der Mensch antwortete, und sprach zu ihnen: Das ist doch wunderbar, dass ihr nicht wisset, woher er ist, und er hat mir doch die Augen aufgetan!

Wir wissen aber, dass Gott Sünder nicht erhört, hingegen wenn jemand Gott dient, und seinen Willen tut, den erhört er.

Von Ewigkeit her ist es nicht erhört worden, dass jemand die Augen eines Blindgeborenen aufgetan hat.

Wenn dieser nicht von Gott wäre, so hätte er nichts ausrichten können.

Sie antworteten, und sprachen zu ihm: Du bist ganz und gar in Sünden geboren, und du lehrest uns? Und sie stießen ihn hinaus.

Wahres Sehen und wahre Blindheit

Jesus hörte, dass sie ihn ausgestoßen hatten, und als er auf ihn traf, sprach er zu ihm: Glaubst du an den Sohn Gottes?

Er antwortete, und sprach: Wer ist es, Herr! dass ich an ihn glaube?

Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Du hast ihn gesehen, und der mit dir redet, der ist es.

Er aber sprach: Herr! ich glaube. Und er fiel nieder, und betete ihn an.

Und Jesus sprach: Ich bin zum Gerichte in diese Welt gekommen, dass die Nichtsehenden sehend, und die Sehenden blind werden.

Dieses hörten einige von den Pharisäern, die bei ihm waren und sprachen zu ihm: Sind etwa auch wir blind?

Jesus sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr blind wäret, so hättet ihr keine Sünde; nun aber saget ihr: Wir sehen! Eure Sünde bleibt.
